Hi! I am in the market for a replacement for a failing 8710w and have my eye on several 8560ws on eBay. I don't mind downsizing from a 17" to a15" screen. With 8GB, 500GB, the 1920 screen and Win 7 installed they are in the $350 to$450 price range. I like the Elitebook's solid build, keyboard and touchpad layout.
Is there anything in particular I should look out for, or an option I should not miss?
    Thanks,
    -stephen

How does the 8560w stack up against the m4600 and w520? I like the backlit keys as well, but I'm worried about cooling issues? Also, seems hard to find one with a dreamcolor display on ebay, how does the non ips display fare against the other two machines mentioned?

I have pretty much the same questions.

    I am coming from a T410 and a Precision M4400 (which I really love).

I've read a few reviews of the 8560w and I like what I see. I haven't considered the second gen Precision that this HP and W520 would compete with because I don't like the trackpoint on it. I do love the trackpoint on my T410 and M4400 though. I've heard that I can use a red lenovo cap on the HP machine. Even if I can't, the keyboard layout is nice.

I'm basically looking for a 15" business class / workstation laptop with a backlit keyboard and nice LCD to hold me for another year or 2. I really like the looks of the 8560w. I have a few that I am watching on e-bay and I hope to pick one up in january.

From what I understand though, they don't support mSATA drives. Is this correct?

    @memphistre @Temetka

I have T410, T420 and 8760w here side by side. I can confirm that the trackpoint is not compatible. It used to be in the older machines and I had Lenovo cap in my 8510w years ago, now they have changed sizes. Right now I can't test cap from any newer Thinkpads but I'll do it later if I have a chance.

My 8560w non-backlight keyboard is great, I've heard that backlight version feels flimsy in comparison but I cannot confirm that since I've never seen one live. That feeling depends also a lot on what is the previous computer/keyboard you used.

No msata support, I believe that came in xx70w models. I'm 99% sure on that one.

I have no experience on Dells but compared to w520, Elitebook feels a lot sturdier. Mainly because Thinkpad outer shell is plastic and Elitebook has metal shell. That also brings weight. I wouldn't use 8560w in my lap for any longer than necessary, it is too heavy for that :)

So nobody has posted in this thread in a while so I figured I revive it. My crappy HP Pavillion 17 Broke(motherboard fail) so I need a new laptop. I couldn't afford a new one for what I wanted, which is something that is not slow as crap. So I started looking at used couple generation old business class laptops and gaming laptops. I mainly wanted something I can edit video and photos on if I'm not at home using my HP Z800 Workstation. It came down to the Lenovo W520 or the HP EliteBook 8560w. My Budget was about $400 so they both fit.
I chose the HP 8560w because it seemed to be built better, has the option of a backlit keyboard, looks way better, and has the number pad which I use alot. Also it matches my Z800, lol. Here are the specs of the HP 8560w I bought, the upgrades I did right away, and the plans I have for it.

HP EliteBook 8560w with 1080p non DreamColor display.
    Core i7-2820qm cpu
    4GB Memory
    320GB 7200rpm Hitachi HDD
Nvidia Quadro 1000m 2GB graphics card.
    Windows 7 Pro 64 Bit
Came with the 120 watt power supply

Upgrades that I did right away:
    - Sandisk SSD Plus 240GB SSD
    - 16GB Kit Crucial 2 x 8GB DDR3-1600 Memory
    - Samsung Momentus Spinpoint ST2000LM003 2TB 2.5-inch SATA 3 HDD
    - Nimitz 2nd Hard Drive caddy for HP 8560w

Upgrades I am Panning to do:
    - Sandisk ExtremePro 480 or 960GB SSD when the prices come down a bit more. 10 year warranty on these.
    - Another 16GB Kit of Crucial 2 x 8GB DDR3-1600 Memory so I have 32GB total
    - Just because they are pretty cheap now - Core i7-2860qm cpu
    - Nvidia Quadro 2000m 2GB Graphics Card
    - Backlit Keyboard
    - I might sell this one and get a HP 8760w Just so I have the 17 inch screen and extra HDD bay

So far I love this thing. Its the fastest laptop I have ever owned and is a way better deal at $390 vs a new Laptop that as powerful or more. Its built like a tank, the touchpad is the best I have use, don't care about that little pointer thing, Looks awesome and performs great in benchmarks and stress tests. Ran prime95 on it for 45 mins and it sat steady at 80 degrees C for the cpu which is great in my opinion. The screen is way better than my newer HP Pavillion 17 with 1600x900 resolution. It looks great and runs great.

I really believe these use couple generation old mobile workstations are great budget power houses for people who need a powerful laptop but can't afford a new one with these kind of specs. I did the same thing with my HP Z800 Workstation, bought it about 8 months ago used for $420 and did a few upgrades and its a video editing and gaming beast.

Here are some pictures I took of the upgrade process and a couple benchmarks.

Before the upgrades I ran the windows experience score.

By the way I upgrade the 8560w to Windows 10 Pro 64 bit after these tests then did a clean install. It runs great. I have nothing to complain about with this machine.

So, if you can get K2100M or K2200M, you can try those since they are proved to be compatible with 8560W. I have installed the K2100M to my 8560w and it's working perfectly. However, you may need to flash the vbios and add graphic card ID to driver's inf file.

I might if I keep this laptop. I am actually thinking about upgrading to the 8770 so I have the 17 inch screen. 2 normal hard drive slots and options for more powerful graphics cards.

    Hey guys,

I wish to ask you: I have a 8560w with this Quadro 1000M video card, and well, is it possible to upgrade my GPU?
If yes, what would be the best options, or anything that is related to better gaming experience.

    Thank you very much

Hi, I got this little beast a month or so ago and I have a question - 've been reading through this topic but I haven't found an answer.

It's a i5-2540M with Quadro 2000M. I wanna repaste it for the temps seem kinda high?? (CPU ~60 in normal use like browsing etc).

Do I even need to repaste? And were I to, could I put paste everywhere? I mean does it have/need some thermal pads somewhere (GPU for instance) and if so, what thickness? Does it matter?

    Hi man.
First of all you should check the fan. If it is clean then you can repaste.

This beast was designed by an idiot whi should be hanged. The process of cleaning fan or repasting is hilariously stupid.
I had elitebook 8530w and I cleaned the fan with joy. I only removed keyboard and had an access to the important part of the fan and could clean it.

8560w need all the top cover along with the keyboard to be removed and all the heatsink as well. The heatsink is for both gpu and cpu together. You need to take it off as one part.
The important part of the fan is from the bottom part of the heatsink(they couldnt make it more stupid...).
Then you gain access to cpu and gpu surface and you can perform maintenance of the fan as well.

How much of the paste you should use? Just a little bit. The paste is dense so a credit card helps to spread it evenly. Make sure you you clean the parts out-of-the cpu and gpu surface afterwards.

The heatsink is designed so when mounted back it makes a pressure on the cou and gpu surface evenly and with the help of the paste it spreads the heat to the fan.

Hey man, thanks for the reply! :)

So I can use thermal paste instead of pads? Good to know. Will get to it in the following days as it's getting hot in the northern hemisphere :)

I just did the fan cleaning couple of minutes ago and I had to go to the shop to buy Torx screw driver. I did the horror again. I am not pleased :D I cannot figure out how to to it smarter. Maybe there is no way.

Yes, you can use thermal paste. I do not have an experience with the pads but I think pads may promise more straight surface. Depends on quality. I bought a bit expensive thermal paste but when you are about the clean the fan, it still needs to be repasted.

Thermal pads are thick, so if they are removed it's possible that heatsink and chip surface do not properly meet. Check this first before you boot the laptop and do not throw the pads away (or buy replacements anyways).

Hey guys i just bought this monster, second hand, almost brand new, i got the i5 2540m version with 8gb and i've put a 512 gig ssd.

LET ME Say the quality of build of this laptop and the screen is amazing , putting to shame 90% of todays notebooks.

Altought the cpu is powerfull enough i would like to keep this machine for 5.6 years, it is possible if i buy the motherboard that supports the octacore i7 , and then i can just buy the cpu and replace all the other parts ?

Hi guys, I have this laptop. i7 2820qm with the Quadro 2000m. I currently have 2 x 8gb stick and 2 x 4gb stick. The maximum ram i7 2820qm supports officially is 32gb. However, using vms etc additional ram is always welcomed. I am wondering what would happened if I were to put 2 sticks of Crucial 32GB Kit (2 x 16GB) DDR3-1600 in along with my current 8gb sticks which are also ddr3-1600? Would it simply fail to boot? - E.g. refuse to POST? I would love to test it but it is a sizeable investment / waste if the machine can't take it.

Yes, the motherboard swap can be done. The correct part number for the quad core motherboard with Alcor chip upgrade is 684319-001.

My 8560w can't install or boot Windows 7/8/8.1/10 in UEFI mode anymore.

Installing on a clean disk, it gets stuck at the first step "copying Windows files" at 0% and stays there forever.
Shift+F10 to open a command window, I can type bcdedit, which hangs as well for like 3 minutes, then says that a system device is inaccessible.
This is NOT a disk issue as it happens with 3 different perfectly working disks.
Legacy install works fine no issues.
    Linux boots fine in UEFI.

I got these issues after swapping graphics card, actually after swapping from the K1000m back to the original M5950.

Does anyone know where I can get a motherboard that is bad? I need some little clips for the keyboard ribbon cables. Or if anyone knows where I can get those little clips that hold the ribbon cables in.

I would watch eBay for a motherboard marked "for parts / not working." You could also buy one of the cheaper functioning motherboards and remove the clips to replace yours. After doing so, you could resell the motherboard and clearly state in the description that it is missing one or more of the ribbon cable clips. I recently sold just such a board that also had a LAN failure for $43.99. After seller's fees, you would probably be out $15-20 to have your board properly equipped.

Just wondering, has anyone ever upgraded their CPU from anything else to a 2960XM? I've got a spare one that is lying around that I would like to try out.

If it makes a difference, it is the Dreamcolor version.

It is quite likely that this CPU would push your cooling to the limits. Feel free to try it though, just make sure to have thermal compound before hand. Even if it doesn't work out nicely, at least you'd have cleaned your system and played around with it a bit :)

I've poked around the forum quite a bit and am getting mixed answers from multiple posts. I have an AMD Radeon HD 6700M GPU and am looking to upgrade to the Nvidia 2000M. Can I simply swap out the GPU and be ready to rock? If not, what BIOS settings need to be changed?

edit- I updated my BIOS using HP Softpaq Download Manager; downloaded Nvidia drivers and saved them on my desktop; swapped GPU's; booted up; PC ran like normal but with lower resolution; updated drivers; restarted; everything works as expected!

    This is on a 8560W

Has anyone here successfully upgraded the CPU from a dual to a quad without swapping the motherboard?

Currently I have an i5-2540m in my 8560w and would like to upgrade to a quad core but leave the same motherboard (either to a i7-2720qm or i7-2820qm).
I found this topic while searching: https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Noteb...e-Questions/HP-8560w-CPU-Upgrade/td-p/6199594

So it should work at least with a 2720qm - however I would still be left with only 2 RAM slots but I don't care about that since I can just use 2x8GB modules and have plenty of RAM.

Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit) I have a hp elitebook 8560w core i7 with a graphics card amd firepro M5950. I started using it with the windows 7 system that was installed there by default. with the arrival of windows 10 I upgraded my system. everything was fine when I started my video games I played them without worries apart from the fact that the machine heated enormously.after a time, the games began to crash when I launched them.It was necessary to completely extinguish the machine before the to restart. the fateful day was this famous day where I made the last wager of windows 10, after this one to finish, the machine restarted the system was launched and immediately after blue screen. an error message s' poster and the machine restart so on. i ended up with system cahnger and go back to windows 7 but the same thing catches me. I already had to try any type of driver for my grapic card and I even changed the thermal paste on the proccesseur and the graphics processor because I dressed that heating could be for something in there. today I am forced to go into error-free mode, to uninstall the graphics card before using my machine which does not serve me much without the graphics. so in resume once I install the driver of the grapic map, blue screen but when I disintalle the driver the machine works but with the basic graphical configuraton. I have tried everything already and I am desperate. I think my graphics card is dead.I would like you to confirm me. thank you in advance,,

I the 8560w with no Optimus due to the dream color display and fans always loud plus the left side gets very warm. Is there a way to clean the fans without removing the keyboard plate assembly. With the backplate removed, I can gaps where the fan isn't covered so was thinking of just vacuuming the dust out that way.

First make sure the fan isn't going to spin, either stop it with your finger or jam something between the blades. If you let fan spin freely, bearing might be damaged and the fan needs to be replaced afterwards.
I would use compressed air, blow from the outside in.

Is it possibly to add a egpu to the 8560w and if so is it limited to pcie 2 lanes?

Would a consumer gtx1060 perform faster than the 2000m professional card in the 8560w if i primarily work with 3d models? I know the quadros are cad certified card and willl run better since its more optimised than its consumer counterpart but with a current customer care like the gtx1060, will it perform any better?

For CAD applications forget it, anything that is consumer oriented will perform worse than pro cards and you won't have all the features in the viewport.

Please i have some black screen when i'm trying to boot with graphics drivers. I have a hp 8560w with firepro m5950 and windlws 7. This problem appear when i had update to windows 10 now i can only use my laptop without graphic driver.
I have a hp elitebook 8560w core i7 with a graphics card amd firepro M5950.

I started using it with the windows 7 system that was installed there by default. with the arrival of windows 10 I upgraded my system. everything was fine when I started my video games I played them without worries apart from the fact that the machine heated enormously.after a time, the games began to crash when I launched them.It was necessary to completely extinguish the machine before the to restart.

the fateful day was this famous day where I made the last wager of windows 10, after this one to finish, the machine has restarted the system was launched and immediately after blue screen. an error message s' poster and the machine restart so on. i ended up with system cahnger and go back to windows 7 but the same thing catches me.

The black rubber seal around the bezel is really flaky and is starting to come off. Just rubbing my fingers on it softly will cause the rubber to come right off. Is this normal?

Also even with the full/color profile selected within the hp mobile display assistant, If find the greens to be quite dull compared to the other colors. Does anybody have a custom color profile they can share that fixes this issue?

My 8560w is getting quite hot particularly on the left side plus fans are aloud spinning at full speed even when on idle doing nothing buy a few tabs open in chrome.
I used core temp and this is the result I got. Is the considered normal?

I managed to get a nice B156HW01 v7 screen but I can't get it to work.
My understanding is that the 8560w has a proper 40 pin dual channel LVDS cable.
But the screen only displays solid white.
I tried a Dell Latitude E6520 (also dual channel - comes with 1600x900 display) and it had the same result, just a white screen.
Any ideas or am I SOL?

Not normal. If I were you I would remove the CPU heatsink clean the dust inside, and re-apply TIM.

Has anyone managed to get the m2200 working? Apparently it is a maxwell based gpu though not sure if it's 3.0a like the m2000m

I have windows 10 installed running an old BIOS released all the way back in 2011.
The latest BIOS available (2014) on the hp site is only available with Windows 8.1? (There is no windows 10 drop down option). Is it safe to install it despite running windows 10? Same applies to all the other available drivers for download.

I currently only use driver booster to update drivers.

I should but sometimes during start up temperature will stay around 45-52 degrees with the temp and fans suddenly increasing for no apparently reason after 30 mins or so. To me this indicates some time as running in the background and is stressing the cpu/gpu although i have already went into the settings and turned off all the unnecessary features plus all the auto start programs.

The temperatures seesm to have increased a lot more after installing the latest bios.

Also I've always had audio cutting in and out with all my bluetooth headset and gets worse once two metres away from the machine. Is it possible to replace the bluetooth component?

    Good afternoon all,

I'm looking for a little help here. I know this is the 8560w lounge but this seems to be the only place talking about upgrading their laptop from a Quadro k1000m to a Quadro k2200m. I have a HP Elitebook 8570w and from what I can tell there is not much difference between the 8560w and the 8570w. I recently upgraded my Quadro k1000m to a k2200m, as a result I lost the backlight on my display. I managed to install Nvidia drivers from the HP website ( Nvidia drivers from Nvidia site will not work because no compatible hardware was found). After installing the drivers using SP82364 ( I had to install the drivers manually, showing incompatible devices) everything seems to be working except I can not see the screen until the Nvidia driver is loaded. The problem with this is I can not make any changes to the BIOS easily, if I need to reinstall my OS I am stuck there too. Is there anyway I can flash the vBIOS to make this card work before Nvidia drivers are loaded? If so which vBIOS would I need and if possible can the file be provided? I have the non-Dreamcolor version. The part that I bought from ebay is N15P-Q5-A2 Qual Sample, the current vBIOS is 82.07.49.00.01 which looks like it was meant for a DELL PC even though the seller advertised it as compatible for the Elitebook 8570w. Any help is really appreciated. I am getting over 5000 in 3DMark 11 so it seems as if the card is working.

I figured it out. I will outline the process for anyone trying to add a Nvidia Quadro k2200m to a HP EliteBook 8570w with a non-Dreamcolor screen. This process may work for other HP EliteBooks of this generation with a non-Dreamcolor display, I take no responsibility with your result if you mess things up.

Before we begin on my laptop when I lost my backlight the VGA port didn’t work but my display port did work using the [Fn] + [F4]. I have a DisplayPort to HDMI adapter and I was able to see the screen to make the changes necessary without having the benefit of a laptop screen.

    1. Enable RDP or if you have VNC make sure it is turn on that way if you don’t have another monitor to use you can gain access to your PC through a remote connection.
    2. Upgrade your GPU, there are many videos out there that can show you how to do this. Here is a good link to show you how to access and replace many parts. https://h20574.www2.hp.com/results.htm?SID=5257502&MEID=2CBB4A54-A9D2-4561-A29E-404F40C9ABFC
    3. After you have installed your new GPU and reassembled your laptop you will not have a backlight if your vBIOS doesn’t have the correct output signal, for me I had to flash my vBIOS with a version that comes with the Dell computer but more on that in a bit.
    4. Start your computer up and connect a external display to your DP port. For me, I RDP to connect my laptop and installed the HP Nvidia Quadro driver SP82364 which you can get from here https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-elitebook-8570w-mobile-workstation/5257502
    5. The driver will not install so you will have to install it manually. When installing the driver manually you will have to check the box to show incompatible devices and the k2200m will show up.
    6. Once the driver installs and you reboot you will have a backlight again on your display but it will only work when the driver loads.
    7. In order to make your backlight work in the BIOS as well as the boot process prior to loading the Nvidia driver you have to flash the vBIOS of your laptop.
    8. The vBIOS that worked for me was a Dell one which you can get here
    9. You will also need the Nvflash tool which you can get from here
    10. I also recommend you get GPU-Z so you can backup your current BIOS just for safe keeping. You can get GPU-Z from https://www.techpowerup.com/download/techpowerup-gpu-z/
    11. Backup your current vBIOS using GPU-Z there several sources on how to do this including YouTube
    12. Put the 183005.rom that you downloaded in step 8 in the same folder as Nvflash
    13. Disable your Nvidia Driver
    14. Load up the command prompt in administrator mode
    15. Navigate to the folder that contains the Nvflash64.exe file
    16. Type “nvflash64 --protectoff”
    17. Type “nvflash64 -6 183005.rom”, then say yes to all the prompts
    18. After the flashing is complete reboot your computer
    19. You now have your backlight again, don’t forget to enable your Nvidia driver that you disabled in step 13.
    20. If your hotkeys are not working you can use the HotKey fix from HP which you can get from here https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/closure/hp-elitebook-8570w-mobile-workstation/5257502
Congratulations you should have a fully functional Nvidia Quadro K2200m Graphics card in your HP EliteBook 8570w. From benchmarks this card is about 5 times faster than the Quadro k1000m that I had. The part that I got is N15P-Q5-A2 which I got from ebay. The Ebay description said it was 8570w compatible but I think it was pulled from a HP Z-book and clearly it wasn’t 100% compatible otherwise I wouldn’t have to write this guide. My card did same sample on it.

Some benchmarks, I used 3DMark 11 here is what I got:
    Nvidia Quadro K1000m – P1310 Graphics 1158 Physics 7197 combined 1058
    Nvidia Quadro K2200m – P5248 Graphics 4975 Physics 7245 combined 5242
    Delta - P 4x Graphics 4.3x Physics 0% combined 4.95x

The K1000m is a 45W part while the K2200m is a 65W part, that is a 44% increase in TDP which is something to consider if you are thinking about making this upgrade but I have not noticed the fan spinning up more than normal. I am not a gamer and plan on using the increased GPU power to do a little retro gaming.
That is 400% increase in the p score 429% increase in graphics, essentially the same physics score and 495% increase in the combined score.
I am happy with the results, when I got my hands on this laptop I was surprised by how upgradable it was. Here are some of the upgrades that I have made.
Bluetooth 4.0 module, upgraded the Wi-Fi to Intel AC 7260 HWC (card has Bluetooth but Bluetooth will not work, I tried putting tape over the last pin nothing worked), added the webcam made for this laptop, which cause me to get a new trim for this laptop, installed a Samsung EVO 860 500GB SATA 3.0 2.5” Drive, another 500 GB Samsung EVO 860 mSATA drive, Upgraded the memory to 32GB DDR3 RAM, MATSHITA Blue-ray / DVD writer, HP Backlit Keyboard and my processor is i7-3630QM. This machine is so nice I don’t really use my Microsoft Surfacebook anymore.
I hope this helps someone because I was looking all over for a step by step guide and didn’t find anyone putting the information all in one spot.

    Hi!
I've just bought this great laptop (secondhand of course). It has win7 key, but the previous owner updated it to win 10. Like this, few drivers are not working, so I can not usefor example the fingerprint sensor. Now windows updated some drivers, and I am getting a blue screen when I am on wifi. I tried to look up the drivers on hp page, but there is no support for win10 for this laptop. Is somebody here that uses win10 and could tell me which drivers are good for it? I would like averything to work under win10 if it is possible.
    Thanks!
