    Hello, guys!

Need your assistance with GPU upgrade issue on 8730w:

I have configuraton with ATI Mobility FireGL V5725 preinstalled. But is it possible to buy 3700M that fit our laptops and install it into my config? Someone has already did it?
I think there will be no problems with BIOS whitelist but there may be problems with heatsink fit...
So i need your help! Any thoughts?

    Thank you!

    @glenn_duke

I would say that you now have a non Dreamcolor Display :(

    Mine Dreamcolor is a LP171WU5-TBL1

As you can see in the LG Catalog (Just click on "Digital Catalog" on the link below) on Page 7 that your model is only 6 Bit (262k Colors) and the Dreamcolor Model with RGB Led is 8 Bit (16.7m). If you didn't know yet, you can also see that the Dreamcolor Display takes nearly twice the Power of an normal Display ;)

Okay thanks for the info, just talk to HP Service Center and they will schedule to pick up my laptop next week for another replacement, although they are still insisting my lcd panel is a dreamcolor panel.

For your reference, my DreamColor panel is also LP171WU5-TBL1. However, I am confused by your claims because you said it looks like a Dreamcolor panel to you. I can clearly tell the difference between a Dreamcolor panel and a normal panel, which is why it is worth the upgrade.

However, judging from the LG spec page, it appears your model number correspond to a normal 6-bit panel. Get it replaced.

Well, I know the difference between my original dreamcolor display and the replacement display, that is why I started asking HP and researching the web on how to determine if the correct part was installed. HP has kept on telling me my replacement display is a dreamcolor and that I only need to update my drivers because my hard drive was restored to factory default during the service. I have to convinced them that it is not before they will agree to pick up my laptop for another servicing. Anyway thank you guys for your help, especially the LG catalog that really helps.

    Hi,
The first thing to check is if your genuine card is MXM III port (because the FX3700M is MXM III).

    But...

I post a few days ago a problem about this...
    I have a 8730w with a quadro FX2700M, I bought a 3700M to upgrade, on ebay.
The new graphic card fits perfectly inside and there is no problem with the fan (I just needed to take out the original plastic support under the card to put under the new one because of fan's crews size) .

And... my laptop don't accept this card: it powers up, seems to boot (but not) and the screen remains off!

I spent hours to search for solutions on the net but the only info I have found was that it could exist a motherboard bios limitation for changing GPU...

Well I don't know why but I don't believe it... maybe my graphic card is just dead! I am still trying to figure it out...

That page can help people who wants to open this laptop and change parts:
    http://bizsupport1.austin.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c01570784/c01570784.pdf

Here vidéos of changing parts and partslocator:

Here comparison of GPUs and info about them:

    Hi All,

I've sort of gotten my movie playback problem solved by manually adjusting some of the video related parameters in the nvidia control panel.

I stumbled upon the nvidia OpenGL 3.x drivers ( http://developer.nvidia.com/object/opengl_3_driver.html). Will these drivers work for normal graphics (e.g movies, pictures) or only for specific OpenGL enabled applications?

yeah I had the same issue. I told them that my screen has got a dead pixel and they refuse to change it. I told them that IF steven spielberg has a dead pixel on his dreamcolor screen, would u change it?

then the best part. our dream color is 494015-001 part number, the first replacement, they replaced with 494019-001 WXGA screen. I told them wrong and they insisted that it was right. then i got the SUPERVISOR. he said he will reorder the part number for me. this time, he replaced it with 494013-001 WXSGA !!!!!!!!

I had no idea that singapore HP employs bloody morons. it's been 2months already and the issue is still not resolved. each time they say they reorder, it takes them 3-4 weeks.

they had the cheek to tell me that not all screens are the same batch which is why my old screen was so much brighter than the replacements.

singapore HP needs to fire those china engineers.

    Hi,

I've just received my 8730w and have a question regarding the pink color cast on the Drem Color display.

I do have a small pinkish cast at the left bottom of the screen. This is clearly visible at the XP login screen, but not as much during regular work.

Is this more or less a problem on all Dream Color units?

Has HP find the source of the problem? Do I have a good chance to get a perfect screen if I decide to try to get the unit replaced?

Just as what I thought, they did put the wrong part. This is the confirmation I got from HP. And LP171WU3-TBL1 they installed in my laptop is definitely not the 494015-001 part number. Anyway the laptop is scheduled for pick-up, hope they will not replaced this with a returned panel. Thanks BD.

Thank you for contacting HP e-Solutions.
This is in response to your incident id: 2490891 for the unit 8730w Notebook.
I understand that the display panel of the unit was replaced; however, it was replaced with an incorrect part. You also experience issues with installing HP Display Assistant with the replaced display panel.

I appreciate your time and patience. I shall assist you in this regard.

Glenn, as per the serial number the part number of the display panel shipped with the unit is as below:
    494015-001 SPS-PANEL,DSPLY 17.0 WUXGA RGB LED W/CAM

In order to confirm the part number replaced, please confirm me if the case number is 3605882991 and also check if you could find the 6 digit HP Spare part number like 494015-001 (ending with 001).

This information would confirm if the part replaced was incorrect or not. If it is incorrect I shall arrange to get the correct part for you by an onsite service.

In order to process the case, please update me the contact details:
    1. First and last name
    2. Company name
    3. Shipping Address with zip code
    4. Phone Number with alternate phone Number

I appreciate your assistance in collecting the above information. Please reply with an update at your earliest convenience and we will be glad to assist you.

Once again, thank you for contacting HP e-Solutions and have a wonderful day.

I read the ITRC link and logged a repair call with HP. Their response was to replace the DreamColor panel, and not swapping any cables connecting the mobo & the panel. Kinda confuse now

Not quite sure if its worth the risk to get them to replace the panel.

From the case history, I found out that this is a known issue with 8730w with DreamColor. HP has an internal advisory on this issue, and classified as a fix-on-failure. Meaning that they won't proactively check who bought such a config and do the necessary replacement.

Right now, I'm worried that the replacement DreamColor panel may be coming from the spares pool which contain the defective panels.

You're right to be worried, I am also, to the extent that I'm not yet doing anything about it. My panel is a decent one and the laptop is working well, it's been fiddled with enough already and I may choose to do nothing about the battery problem....these machines are not really built for battery use anyway. At the moment I dock the laptop without the battery, which maintains it's charge well disconnected, I slip in the battery when I need it. You're not supposed to use AC power with the battery in anyway, it reduces the life of the battery.

    Hi all -

I have read almost this entire chain and just signed up to thank you all for all the awesome info. I researched this purchase for a very long time and finally took the plunge on my 8730w with dreamcolor. I skimped a little on the RAM and Processor, 4gb and 2.4 but it was worth it to get the Dreamcolor and FX3700. I will upgrade the CPU and RAM later.... All in 1599.99 for a brand new, 2.4ghz 4gb, Dreamcolor, 250gb HD, FX3700. No web-cam but i was willing to give that up for a good price on a system with the Dreamcolor(which is amazing and worth every penny if your doing graphics/photography ) and 1gb video.

I do have a little bit of pink in the lower left corner of the LCD, but i can barely notice it unless i have a full white screen. Can't notice it at all during normal use. I'm not going to fuss with it considering all the issues that people have reported here.

Now to the toughest part. Anyone know a nice sleeve for this thing? What are you using? I love the foof sleeves (google it) but they dont look like they will fit. Anyone know of anything similar that is NOT made specifically for an APPLE!?!

Well, I used to work at HP as an onsite hardware engineer (not on the PC stuff though) to know that spares in HP are managed really delicately, i.e. using a very cost conscious approach and not quality controlled approach.

We could expect DOA replacement parts, parts which fail after a while and even wrong parts being packaged. So i'll keep my fingers crossed to hope that the replacement panels are new parts.

Anyway, given the level support that comes with the 8730w, its our right as consumers to demand the best available parts to be used.

For me, I indicated in my case history to request for new replacement parts rather than refurbished parts. It is actually possible to tell from the state of the packaging of the parts like anti-static wrapping, torn/worn labels on the exterior of the box, how many times the box have been sealed using tape, the condition of the packaging foam etc.

What I intend to do is to visit the service center myself when the part is available. I'll request to physically inspect part myself prior to the replacement, just to ensure that the part is some refurbished crap.

    Hello,

I just bought a 8730w (T9600 FX2700) and get a strange noise when the battery is in the laptop. (received yesterday)

When i plug the power adapter the noise disappear. What is very strange is that when the laptop is turned off, there is still this noise ..
Is is a very low High ptiched sound ( like high voltage sound), it is clicking . but not like a Hard Disk.
I called HP support and they will send me a new battery but i'm not sure this is coming from the battery ..

It cannot be a config issue because this sound started when i put the battery in the laptop the first time ..

Does anyone got a similar prob .. ???

    Thanks in advance ..

    Hi to all!
I'm desperately looking for a bios for the preproduction model.
I have one of those and one off-the-shelf unit and I had the bad idea to upgrade the bios in the preproduction with a bios available at the hp site. the result is that now the system is unusable. it posts, says that the bios upgrade has gone bad and start loading windows. once the desktop has loaded it freezes. it happens with ubuntu live too. it works fine if I start windows in safe mode. I think it has to do something with the lan chip that has been changed from preproduction to production unit or amt that seemed to be disabled in the preproduction bios.
what I'm looking for is basically the bios version b.23 or something similar.
you can see it in this picture for example
    http://www.auctiva.com/hostedimages...0607,285900637&formats=0,0,0,0,0,0,0&format=0
if anybody has an advice let me know. I'm ready to pay for the right bios as it would bring my laptop to life again
    thanks in advance to everybody

    Hi All,

I'm recently acquired a Expresscard/34 3G HSUPA modem. With my battery removed and plugged directly into the AC, I used the 3G modem for about 5mins and found the area right on top of the expresscard slot to be extremely hot.

Upon removal of the card, it was so hot that I almost couldn't hold it with my bare hands.

I'm not sure if this is a known problem with the expresscard slot of the 8730w, or the card itself. The card is 100% functional. Any advice?

    Cheers,

The only thing that i can say is that i've got an ExpressCard 54 CF Adapter in the slot 24/7 and no problems.

You write Expresscard 34 - are the specs the same aside from the shape?

It shouldn't be a problem with the specs of the card as the hardware detection and driver installation went through without a hitch. It was also functioning properly.

I'm just puzzled as to why this expresscard 3G modem generated so much heat.

Not sure but i think that it's normal for these modems to get hot maybe not that hot as yours but they definitively get some temp. In the army some friends had USB 3G modems and these got hot too.

If you haven't already, try the modem in another notebook (friend/work) and see what happens with the temperature.

    Hi All,

I plan to order a 8730w quite soon. But reading this thread a couple of questions have arised.

    - Is this model a Pain in.....

    - Is the battery a general problem?

    - Is the 1920x1200 non-LED display a problem?

    - What is your individual confidence level? Scale 1-10, 1 lowest, 10 highest

    - Is is advisable to order a device that comes from the HP renew program?

    - If I now buy a 8730w from the renew-program, is this eligible for a Windows 7 ugrade? The 8730w actually is, but does HP exclude these renewed from the Windows 7 upgrade?

    Many thanks

My HP8730W finally arrived after 10 days at the service center, the lcd panel is now the real dreamcolor panel, they finally got it right. No edge color bleed, after 2 trips to the service center hopes theres no more problem....

Hi. I've read through this whole thread, too and - despite some reservations based on the comments - I finally decided to buy a refurbished 8730w from the HP Business Outlet. I've only had it for a few weeks but, so far, I am pleased with the value and the performance. Here's my attempt to answer your questions based on my short-time experience with a refurbished DreamColor 8730w:

    * So far, not a pain. The screen really is bright and I like it. I'm replacing an older HP nw8440 with a rating of about 170 nit and it was just way too dim for some uses. I'm actually finding that I can frequently turn some of the DreamColor brightness DOWN. It's that bright. I haven't seen any of the problems people mentioned with the red coloration in any of the corners. And, after charging the battery overnight when it was new, used it a bit and then left the battery in and not plugged in. A week or so later, it hadn't lost that much of a charge. So, the battery discharge problem hasn't been an issue for me yet.

    * So far, love the display. I'm glad I held out for a DreamColor since I think the extra nits of brightness will help in some of my common usage (office, coffee shop, etc.) while I work. As I said, my old laptop just seemed too dim for some uses.

    * So far, my confidence level is a 9. Not perfect but high hopes. And, from the HP Business Outlet, I was able to get a 3-year warranty for an additional $60 or so.

    * I don't know what the 'HP Renew' program you mention is. However, the HP Business Outlet web site told me that the 8730w was one of their refurbished machines that does qualify for a free Windows 7 upgrade. I've filled out the online forms and my current status is that my order has been approved for a 'free' upgrade (though I need to pay $12.99 for shipping/handling) to Windows 7 Professional (32-bit). I'm not sure whether I'll actually be able to install the 64-bit version from the media (since it hasn't been shipped to me yet) and why the upgrade is limited to 32-bit (perhaps it's because the OS that shipped with the machine was Vista Business 32-bit with downgrade to XP rights). So, so far, every indication that I'll be able to get the free upgrade.

Hope this helps. I'll try to report on any other observations I make as I use the 8730w more. Not going to move all my data/apps to in until after I get the Win 7 upgrade since I plan to do a 'clean install'.

    -J-

I'm thinking of getting a 17" bizclass HP, but I'm still not sure about a few things. I'm really worried about the 1900x1200 resolution being too high for me, but with Windows 7 I know there's some better scaling ability. Does anybody use that and does it make the 1080p resolution okay?

About the Dreamcolor screen, is it glossy?

And there are some 8710w notebooks (last model) on eBay for about $900. Would it be a much better deal to go with the new EliteBook over that model?

HP Sweden lists all 8730w configurations as out of stock. This wasn't the case two weeks ago. New model soon?

DreamColor is matte. Thank you HP, thank you.

There's a few cheap 8730ws on eBay too. Keep in mind that only some have the DreamColor.

How about the resolution? Does Windows 7 make it easier to enlargen the OS? Does anybody do this with success?

I'm happy owner (for now) of 8730w QX9300 for 5 days. I'm running Win 7 (64bit) on It and I haven't noticed any problems like battery drain or red coloration.
Yes display is exelent and even on highest resolution I'm able to see everything on it (I'm 52 and my eyes....). Comparing to my old ZD7030US It is not comparable!
klezmer41 you can change screen resolution to lower one and under Win 7 You can scale almost everything.
Yes, wonderful and very fast machine.

    Regards,
    Jaka

I don't know what do you mean with "enlargen the OS" but under Win 7 You can enlarge display text, icons for 200% (100% is default size, then 120%, 150% and 200%).
Yes I've tried just because of You and yes It works.

    Regards,
    Jaka

I have a 8530W with the 770M graphics card, which has been terrible for playing games with, even though I see others with the same notebook saying they are getting great results. Perhaps I need different drivers, could someone point me in the right direction?

What is the maximum video resolution with 2 screens on the 8730w , FX2700?

I'm in the process of turning my 8730w laptop into a more stationary solution with 2 24" monitors.
As far as I can tell, it is possible to connect 2 monitors to the 2008 (advanced) docking station, 1 in the VGA port and the other one in the DVI port.
I have 2 questions regarding this setup, and I hope that someone who has done this and has some experience.

    1. Does the difference between the analog VGA and the digital DVI cause any image quality differences on the 2 monitors?
I suppose I could use a DVi-> VGA adapter to make both monitors use VGA, it it does.

    2. What is the maximum resolution one can use with the nVidia FX 2700 512MB card?
I'm thinking of 2 24" monitors with each having 1920x1200 pixels. Can the FX 2700 cope with that?
Can it even handle the odd 2048x1152 resolution as found on the Samsung 2343BW ?
I'm sure it can handle it in a one monitor scenario, but how about 2 x 2048 x 1152 ?

    Regards,
    M

I'm really worried about the 1080p resolution. I like it on a 24" monitor, but on a 17" I think it might be really too small. Does anybody have the lower res screen on this computer because of that reason?

On 17" it's nice. Especially with Vista and Win7 that scale nicely. Presumably you'll keep your eyes a bit closer to a laptop screen than a 24" desktop screen.
