Today I discovered that internal eSATA controller of my 8730w running Windows 7 Professional x64 is non-compatible with my Western Digital My Book Studio 1 TB external drive!

If I connect the drive to the notebook with eSATA cable the OS recognizes it the disk in Device Manager but no more - it tells "No drivers are installed for this device" (see attached screenshot).

The same trick with Ubuntu Linux results in normal disk access. If I the drive to the notebook with eSATA cable but using third-party ExpressCard-eSATA adapter, then both Windows 7 Professional x64 and Ubuntu Linux recognize the drive and give normal access.

I also found a reference for the similar issues here: Business support forums - Elitebook 8730w external esata drive problems

Any ideas on how to fix such behavior for the built-in eSATA adapter?

Technical support has suggested me to follow article c01603144. I've passed all steps, but still have the same behavior - HDD doesn't appear in Disk Management.

Problems with my new Core2Quad Q9200 CPU
Anyone having problems with updating a HP 8730w from dualcore(T9400) to core2quad(q9200)?
I updated my bios and installed the cpu.
Now my notebook is very slow (windows 7 pro start) and has problems with the shutdown(freeze).

The standard motherboard is not compatible with the quad-core CPU. However, if you search back a few pages in this thread, IIRC, a member here was indeed able to do it successfully and wrote a brief post about it.

I have the same problem. I think that it's impossible to run it (from T9600) proper with a QuadCore. Now I'm really disappointed from my HP 8730W...
    Maybe my last HP?

I sure wish I could help you. I just can't remember where I read about this, and was quite sure it was here. IIRC, there was something about the BIOS and the power supply not being stable enough on the motherboard for the quad core's needs, but that the guy who did this was able to resolve the issue.

I wonder if you simply don't have the proper power supply. IIRC, the quad core needs at least a 180W power supply, if not the 230W.

I wish you luck. If you keep searching, I am sure you will find the info.

To follow up... according to this post, it would seem to indicate that it is indeed possible, if you have the right type of processor (QX9300). Your processor (Q9200) is not.

    Hope this helps!

Edit: the QX9300 is about $400 on ebay, almost twice the cost of the Q9200. Can you return it?
More: maybe you could PM quasi51, he has a similar issue with a Q9100 a while ago

    Hi,

I use 8730w too. I am thinking about setup 2 SSD RAID 0. I am using M255 Crucial 256GB SSD now with another HDD 320GB.

Could someone share me some link or documents guide to setup raid 0 on hp 8730w? I appreciated for your help!

I'm thinking of trading my m11x for one of these...

    specs on trade...
    Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T9400 (2.53 GHz, 6 MB L2 cache, 1066 MHz FSB)
    3 GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
LightScribe DVD+/-RW SuperMulti with Double Layer (in external enclosure)
    17.0-inch diagonal WUXGA+ anti-glare 1920 x 1200 (not Dreamcolor)
    NVIDIA Quadro FX 2700M
Intel 802.11a/b/g/draft-n (up to 450 mbps data rate); Bluetooth 2.0
8-cell (73 WHr) Lithium-Ion (still holds about 2hr of charge)
External 150 watt Smart AC adapter
Still has next business day warranty until 11/19/2012

    few questions...
what would be he best video card that fits? I know it had an option for the FX 3700m, but does anything faster fit?
Does it support extreme edition dual cores like the x9100?
is it possible to buy the dreamcolor display separate? how much?

any other info I should know?

    Hi Whitrzac!
I have upgraded my p8700 to a x9100 and upgraded fx2700 to a 3700. You don't have to change the heatpipes since they fit, but it runs a lot cooler...

I have also changed my 1440x900 ccf display to an Dreamcolor. You need to buy a new display-cable though (with new lightsensor!!). Follow http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-...-led-lp171wu5-8730w-anyone-could-help-me.html .

The dreamcolor is great. The only problem I have now is that after dimming due to inactivity, the screen brightness is lowered. It says it maxed out, but if I just turn it down and then up again it gets to maximum brightness again. Anyone got a solution?

Good to know, I gather there is a series of quad cores that work (can't remember the spec) whereas many others don't. Which one did you use?

I get the same issue, so I just log off and on again, works. I guess one would have to shut down the brightness utility and restart it; I just haven't found it the process and executable for it. Maybe HP knows?

I think brightness is controlled using the BIOS (you can try it during the BIOS screens, should work, too)

However, the onscreen display is done by the "Quick Launch Buttons" software and works only if Windows is loaded.

So, you can try the newest BIOS and "Quick Launch Buttons" sw, if you already have them it could be a problem with the light sensor activation?

    Just guessing...

I don't get your question... x9100 is not a quad core, so what are you asking me?

I've turned off the light sensor.

I want to see if the screen brightness adapts after a while, I've read about the same problem on other laptops and many times it just disappeared. Perhaps this will too? This is such a small problem that I don't have the time to search for solutions at the moment. I'm gonna wait.

I want to upgrade RAM to 2x4GB so please tell me what kind of modules should I search ? Is "CL" parameter important to be exactly like original`s modules or could be lower/higher ?

    2. the PN on the RGB screen is lp171wu5-tlb1 correct?
    3. what is the extra cable/etc that I've read about? part ##?
    4. would it be worth it to upgrade from the 1200x1920 (non LED) screen to the RGB? I have never used a decent LED monitor so maybe "ignorance is bliss"
    5. Can anyone point me to which 3700m cards will fit(from fleebay)
    6. is it possible to pinmod/OC at all?

EDIT: also, will apple C2D cpus work? ex, the e8435...

    2. Correct.
    3. HP 6017B0175901 EliteBook 8730w LED LCD Cble 495607-001. Search ebay.
    4. I do not know. My main priority for change was getting higher resolution, but I'm very satisfied with the dreamcolor. Check the topic I linked to previously.
    5. Any one should work? Why not? I bought mine from ebay from alan_computech_intl .
    6. HP is very difficult to OC due to their BIOS limitation. Also I wouldn't recommend it. But I'm no expe

Don't know about the apple processors... I didn't use one

all I know it has to be PC2-6400, 800 MHz, DDR2

however, I don't know what is compatible if you cannot find the exact specification

(SO-DIMM for notebooks of course and I think all are CL6)

I just purchased a new 8730w. It's a very nice machine. However, I think I may have inadvertently damaged the power brick (see below).

    1. Has anyone ever used a Tripp Lite surge suppressor (not the portable version) with one of these laptops? Whenever I do anything that is CPU or GPU? intensive the surge suppressor lets out a loud 60 Hz hum accompanied by a crackling noise. I tried 3 different Tripp Lites and all three make the same noise (with one much louder than the other two). Over the phone Tripp Lite tech support wasn't able to help me determine if the loud one was defective.

    2. Forgive me, this may sound paranoid, but I just wanted to be certain that my (possibly) faulty surge suppressor didn't damage my power brick:

Is the green light on the power brick supposed to stay on for a long period of time after the notebook has been unplugged from the wall, but is still plugged into the notebook?

Is it normal for the power brick to emit a soft buzzing/crackly sound during CPU/GPU intensive tasks?

    3. Could anyone offer any suggestions for a portable surge suppressor?
I noticed that for APC's the operating current is only 2.5 A (the 8730w power brick says 2.7 A), and I am unable to find how much current Tripp Lite's portable surge suppressors can handle.

Thank you in advance for the help.

    My Configuration:
    Graphics: nVidia Quadro FX3700M
    CPU: T9900
    Hard Drives: 2 x 320
    Optical Drive: None
    Power Brick: 150 W

I have two PSUs, 150W, both make the same noises, sometimes crackling and so on. But I only hear the crackling if I put my ear on it.

The green lights stays on for a while after unplugging the wall plug. Never tried the other way. Nothing wrong, all PSUs I have do this.

I noticed different louder crackling noises during charging from the notebook itself (can be heard from a few meters) but don't think these are a problem and they are normal but of course it would be nicer without them.

Never noticed crackling noises from a distance during gaming or normal usage and so on though. But during gaming the fan is too loud to hear them.

Sotton, thank you very much for responding. Can I ask you one last paranoid question? If you unplug the power brick from the wall, but leave it plugged into the laptop, can you hear a soft click (kind of like a static discharge) coming from the laptop, that happens about once every second?

Also, please forgive me for all of the questions, my other Compaq laptop / power brick never made any noises, except the normal fan and the hard drive noises.

Thank you again for your help.

sorry, cannot test right now but all my HP PSUs make noises so I don't think you should worry if it is not too loud and still works

if you turn up the audio sound volume and hear some humming that could be a problem but anything else I don't think so

Just make sure you have a grounded line! As I remember only grounded lines are allowed...

Checked the audio by turning up the volume all the way. Completely silent

I'm almost certain that the line is grounded.

    Greetings Everyone,

I have owned mt 8730w now for nearly two years, and after heavy abuse on the batteries, I need to look into replacements.

I have been using the 12-cell ultra capacity in addition to the main battery. Originally, the pair gave me 7-8 hrs of average use. Now, I'm down to 2-3 before they're depleted.

I know this is average battery life based on my previous (nw8240) HP workstation.

I have a connection at HP to get remarketed OEM factory-sealed replacements for about 20% off retail, but I'm also seeing deals on ebay, amazon, and google (places like getpartsonline.com) for nearly 50% less than HP's prices.
The thing that scares me is that some of the products look like cheap or inferior knock-offs. I've been burnt by a seller on ebay who sold me batteries for my old PC that had some dead cells.

Basically ,my question is, does anyone have any reccomendations for a replacement battery dealer/site that has quality parts at a discount?

I am willing to purchase 3rd party batteries as long as they equal the OEM equipment.

All in all, it looks like I may just get what I pay for.

    Thank you for your advice,

    -bbP

    Hi BigBadPhil
In my opinion only HP`s batteries are reccomended for use.

Abuot my OC question - ther is no option with setfsb tool to overclock CPU :( I took with Abo - designer of "setfsb" even I have bought one licence, but after that he recognized that it is possible only with pinmod option. So i have returned my licence key to him ...

"I seem the clock generator is like to ICS9LPRS397DKLF. But, Truested Mode Enable (TME) strap status is no overclocking."

    :(

    Thanks for the advice.

    I have another quick question.

I bought the 8730w a couple years ago with WinXP installed (factory downgrade) and qualified for the Win7 upgrade later in 2009. I successfully upgraded to Win7 Pro 32bit and have loved it since, but I'm starting to want to do a fresh reinstall as I usually do every couple years.

My question is, can I do a fresh, new install with this upgrade disc I originally recieved? On the (Win7 Pro Upgrade Media) disc, it reads "For use only as an upgrade to a Qualifying HP Win 7 Upgrade Option PC" and it has the official product key on the disc sleeve. The was also a Application and Driver Recovery CD included with the upgrade for a repair situation, I presume.

Or, do I have to install WinXP and do the upgrade like I previously did? I'm assuming a fresh Win7 install is going to use less HDD space. Has anyone experienced this?

    I appreciate the advice.

    -bbP

Hi, did anyone upgrade cpu to Core 2 Duo P9700?

i hv P8700 and i love its cool temp and also the fan is also running very quiet, i think most coz of its 25w TDP. since P9700 with 28w TDP, i think should be almost the same, but with higher freq and double sized L2 cache.

But i heard hp has some sorta whitelist thingy to restrict hardware upgrade. Does that affect CPU upgrade?

    Thank you very much :)

I had the same case. Visit HP and replace the power adapter.

Thank you for the advice AKazak.

I did call HP, and they sent me a new ac adapter. The new adapter is definitely quieter, however, it doesn't have the pretty green LED and the rubber feet like the original one.

Strangely enough the original ac adapter was brand new. Maybe my Tripp Lite surge suppressor damaged it? All 4 of my Tripp Lites buzz (1 more loudly than the others) when they're plugged into the laptop and the laptop is doing some CPU/GPU intensive task.

I've since purchased a 2 plug Panamax surge suppressor that's completely silent.

Is it possible to upgrade the dvd burner to a blu-ray/dvd burner combo? I had a look at ebay and various drivers are available from different manufacturer and they all look similar. thank you :)

If it's a ICS9LPRS397DKLF then can do the very simple PLL pinmod like I did to my 2530P here to overlock. I've overclocked a L9400-1.86 to 2.64 (dual-IDA), so was well worth it :)
