Sorry I took so long, got grabbed yestarday for a variety of things I'd been putting off. >.>
Testing now. I *do* have GRUB 1.98 loaded, checking on my update logs to see what I did. Absent a clear indication I'll repeat the process. I don't believe that I needed a LiveCD to clean anything up, but I have some lying around so I might have used one and forgotten. Pretty sure I didn't though.
Can you describe what currently happens when you boot into Ubuntu?
Depending on what's happening, it may be as simple as providing one of my files for you to use.
-
Mine was scheduled on the 9th, but came on the 8th. So I think it'll be earlier than the 14th.
-
There's a sleep/resume issue that may or may not have been fixed by a recent bios update and there is crashing with 4 ram dimms installed, which may or may not be a windows/driver issue.
Don't worry about asking questions, especially in a 200 pg thread. That's why this is a forum, not an article or blog post.
-
It arrived in Anchorage @ 9:31am today. Dunno if customs slows it down, I imagine it would, but I figure it's likely to hit the road today/tonight. As I doubt it fans out to the regional distribution centers from there, I'm thinking there's still another two plane rides to go. With that said, I'll cross my fingers, but I won't go as far as holding my breath.
(edit: there we go, good timing, it's back on the road @ 1:54 PM) -
Meanwhile, my order got delayed further with the possibility of cancellation, according to HP SMB.
If they cancel it after all - that would be my first and last attempt to buy anything from HP...ever. -
Well, you'll be the first guinea pig in this thread with the DreamColor panel. So, pray what you know even if you're not a believer
And please, post photos as soon as possible, specially for the screen, of course
PS: The spanish user it's me, not xsrx. BTW, in my country we call 'conejillos de indias' to 'guinea pig' users. No pun intended
-
Gacias for the correction HiddenUser.
Aikimox, w-t-f?! hate to hear that. Hoping for the best. -
you realize that even if he posts pics of the dc2 screen and assuming his camera can pick up that many colors, YOUR monitor won't be able to show as many colors as are on the picture, so it won't look any different... right?

I had sent a email note to SecretAsianMan to stop by this lounge.
-
NotebookGrail Notebook Evangelist
Was that a email from HP SMB. If so, my SMB Support specialist told to ignore that mail as it was a automated one. Even i got a similar mail the day before it got shipped. -
I do, of course. I (and I think most of us) just want pictures to see if there is any *defect*, such as reddish and blueish tints on corners (already present on the DC1 panel of the 8730w), pictures with the new supposed sRGB emulation mode (to see if undersaturates colors or not, if it's the same as found in the HP LP2480zx, colors will be very close to the sRGB standard, virtually perfect) and, of course, to evaluate the image quality overall, contrast (it should be 1000:1, typical) viewing angles (they should be awesome, at least 170º horizontal), and so on.
PS: And it's very likely his panel will be operating in 8-bit mode, not 10-bit mode, because AFAIK, the Windows GUI doesn't support native 10-bit color output, but true 8-bit (my 2 monitors are 8-bit panels, and they can show up to 16.7 million of simultaneous colors). He'll need to setup Adobe Photoshop/ATi drivers in a special way in order to show 10-bit images (and he still needs to have 10-bit image files to see the difference with normal images). -
You're right, I'm probably overreacting. Too frustrated with the incompetence and lack of sync everywhere.
-
My order is in the same paused status as ever, no information from either site. I got an email from SMB saying "we have been recently notified by the supply chain team that the 8740 Armani platform has been put on hold at the factory due to over demand and product constraints," and that they can't give shipping estimates. A name was attached and there was no mention of cancellation though.
Also included a further discount for the trouble.
(It might have been a reply to my extended rant in the customer experience survey they sent to me . . . )
My order was placed in June, so there are plenty more folks in this thread who are ahead of me in the slowly moving line to get machines. (Mine is not a DC2.)
I asked if I could upgrade my 820 to an 840 without bouncing to the back of the line - I doubt it based on what I've heard here but will update when I get a reply.
@knight427:
I've PMed you several files to try, but I'm guessing the options will be the LiveCD fix (which isn't too bad, and liveCDs are handy to have around for system rescue work) or a reinstall.
(Instead of a Ubuntu LiveCD, you could use SysRescCD, which I heartily recommend having around in any case - it's loaded with most of the rescue tools you need to recover from all sorts of system failures, Windows or Linux.)
If you reinstall, it will do the uninstall for you first. To manually uninstall, the Add/Remove Programs listing is "Ubuntu."
If you reinstall, you could back up the installation within Windows after you reinstall but before updating by copying the whole C:\ubuntu folder, C:\wubildr , and C:\wubildr.mbr -- then if something goes wrong you can try something new without repeating the install process.
You should NOT skip grub config. If it fails anyway, the easiest thing will be to re-try but pin back all grub updates; I can write appropriate configs and the updater will take care of the rest (not updating anything that depends on those packages, although there should be little). -
Good thing the RAWs from my K10D are 12-bit, and a copy of Adobe PS CS5 is coming my way (maybe never would have if I didn't have the fantastic educational discount). Little bit let down that [I don't think] Lightroom, which is what I usually use or always had used previously, won't be 10-bit yet. Anyway...can -- not -- wait ... !!!
-
As you probably gathered from me a few months back, my philosophy was to interact w/HP as little as possible. Father time is giving me enough gray hairs; didn't need more from that!
-
Then you must not have read all the posts a few pages back. I was lamenting opportunity lost when I had noticed someone in this batch just shipped-out re-ordered to i7-840 (and I noticed at least one other person too), making me 'sad' I did not too.

First time parent myself.
But I'm trying to be optimistic (sometimes) - the future looks too clear to understand that our race won't survive that long... for us to turn completely grey
That's why I'm so frustrated with the laptop delays. I need enough time to finish Diablo 3...on a nice IPS screen...with a touch stick
-
Uh that touch stick. I wish Clevo provides option for touch stick. I like touch stick.
-
We all know which will come first: Diablo 3 or the end of the world. Hint. It's not Diablo 3.
-
There's no hope for tp's and matte screens in gaming systems nowadays.
I only know that Duke Nukem Forever will surely appear after the end of the world. Diablo might precede it...or should I say accelerate/provoke it
-
12 bit RAWs? Throw the camera away. My D700 does 14bit RAWs
-
And a whole lot more frame... Show Off.
(
[envy] tho not wanting to pay for SR in lenses had a lot to do w/why I didn't get the D200 @ the time )

Ohhh...Ugh

"Jul 12, 2010 8:01 PM | Clearance delay | ANCHORAGE, AK" -
And here I was thinking from your last post that yours was safely on its way, you b*st*rd. Mine also shows a "Clearance delay"...
-
clearance delay here too. I doubt mine will be first in, as I'm in mississippi.
-
hi, all.. need some confirmation here, as just last week i did a configuration on us website, it no longer shows conflict in hspda BB and DC2 pane option, does that means they could co-exist now? i really would like to get these 2 option together,
from sg.
Thanks in advance. -
I'm not sure the website ever showed a conflict. I think it was found in the tech documents but I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

Goodness the wait is nerve wracking and I'm just waiting for one of you to get a DC2 to break it down head to toe...
Fighting off the open requisition for a M6500 to replace my M6400 while waiting ugh.... -
NotebookGrail Notebook Evangelist
Hmmm...Guess, mine is already being torn down from Head to Toe by the folks in Anchorage.
-
Yes, in the Quick Specs, currently version 7, released on June 25 ( link to pdf). On page 6 it's claimed that:
@Burgerlim: So I recommend you talk to a rep before making your order. -
The "Clearance delay" does not necessarily mean a problem. I had three ThinkPad W700's coming through Alaska by way of Shanghai last year and they all had that status. That was Lenovo, though, and UPS if I remember correctly.
Just because they're going through AK also does not mean that you're going to get your package later,if you live on the east coast or in the midwest, vs. someone in California. Again, using Lenovo as an example, after they came through AK, they all went to a central facility in Kentucky, and subsequently on trucks to be delivered throughout the U.S.
This is exciting!
And I'm not even getting one yet. lol...
-
Wow.. many ordered in 840QM, may i know whats the price and performance different in this to my quoted 820QM?
-
Thanks there, yes talked to "them" but they are just marketing ppl here in sg.. dunno much.. it was me pointed that out to them too.. and changing specs vs $ discount is very troublesome.. everytime quote and requote.. since standard configuration dont offer what i wanted and its very ex.. too due to customization.
-
NotebookGrail Notebook Evangelist
$50 price difference. Aniticipated performance is close to a 920XM but with less power consumption as 820QM. Browse thru a couple of pages back, there was a link to a review of the new processors.
Edit:Here is the link -
Delete* double post.
mod please delete this. Thanks. -
Thanks! hmmm i have just been given some very minor disc.. but got to stick with 820QM is that worth it?

Hey All. I got an email from NotebookGrail to the effect that I need to revisit this thread and finish what I started. So here I am. If I read the previous few pages correctly, it looks like m8o is about to be the first member of the general public to take delivery of a DC2-equipped unit. It's great to see that there has been some real progress.
I'll be skimming the last 100 or so pages, and will update the first posts to reflect the current status.
Meanwhile, I'm not an owner, and might not ever be. If an actual owner wants to volunteer to edit the first posts, I'm all for it. Once the DC2 is in our hands, and we finally have definitive answers to the many questions about it, it might in fact be a good time to start a fresh thread close this one. Until that happens, I'll keep this one updated. -
NotebookGrail Notebook Evangelist
If your rep in your country allows you to upgrade to 840QM for $50 or less, then yes-go for it, if not, it ain't worth it. The laptop isn't going to become a super computer all of sudden by upgrading from 820 to 840. -
Nice to see you again SAMan; still hope you join us one day. I'm not so sure I'll be '1st', rather I think we've got a pretty good horse race going here of a batch of machines released from the factory @ the same time. I suspect I'll be getting mine a few hours later than others actually given my 'relative remoteness' to others here on LI, so FedEx usually ends their daily deliveries here rather than begins from here.
-
NotebookGrail Notebook Evangelist
Looks like we won't get our 8740W on time. HP has a f*****g history of screwing up with customs.
Link from another HP forum
So, guess like a few more days wait.
-
Ahhhh, sweet release:
"Jul 13, 2010 2:00 PM Int'l shipment release ANCHORAGE, AK"
I'm betting everyone else's got released too... -
I'd have to be a fool to bet against that when they're all in the same batch/box.
(yes, I'm on the move too. If it flies here from the central distri center, there's still a chance for tomorrow!)
-
NotebookGrail Notebook Evangelist
Mine too. But, i called HP for the delay and got a $50 credit.
-
I clearly have to work on my negotiating skills...But I'll just be glad when this torture ends. Next Headline:
-
Oh, cruel world!
Luckily, mine is probably moving with a caravan of turtles and has 0 chances of crashing as well as 0 chances of reaching the destination this year
-
I have had my 8740W for a month now and have hit a pretty big problem. The wireless device generates a lot of IRQ Latency for me, this results in latency spikes in games/internet useage.
Can other owners also gives this little tool a go and tell me if they see yellow/red bars when using their wifi connection (stream videos, copy files).
DPC Latency Checker
After disabling the wifi device in the device manager the IRQ Latency has vanished completely. -
How big are the spikes? Could you post a screenie?
-
NotebookGrail Notebook Evangelist
If it happens , i will end up getting it for free.
HP might even delay it saying we are still picking up the parts from the crash site.
-
Anyone know when F.04 is coming out? Someone had linked to the release notes about 10 pages back. I figure it should be out already?
-
Wooooww... This thread should be named the OFFICIAL HP EliteBook 8740w wannabe owners Lounge. LOL
In addition, a plane loaded with HP notebooks crashes (I'm happy because the crew was rescued)...
This stuff might be used as a screenplay for a new action and thriller film: Mission Impossible IV: Get the 8740w with the DreamColor panel. Starring: the long-suffering users (Tom Cruise no longer produces nor plays this saga, because he doesn't trust HP as ours)
A bit of humour doesn't harm nobody
