    @NotebookGrail:
Yeah I have been tracking my order with that link. But I don't think it is as real-time as I thought it was.

If it makes you feel better, your ship dates are like a week earlier than mine :).

Edit2: Actually, what is the shipping date that shows up for you on the link that Thecla posted?

Maybe we can make sense of the dates yet! :)

Hopefully, I will have more to update on this later.

@NotbookGrail: hmmm, maybe there is some sense in the tracking system. Looks like you will be telling us all about the 8740w while we are still  in wait. :)

@Aikimox: I'd save the beer money for the "future SSD fund." :p

I don't have an account there to login to --- shouldn't all the order status info point to the same place though? Of course, 'should" and "does" are two different things...

So what's with the color calibrator? Does HP provide one with the system or do we have to order it separately? I couldn't find any such items on their website.
    Any ideas?

No, we have to buy theirs for the $350 pricetag, model KZ300AA. I'm going to start with setting the machine to sRGB and see how matching my dyesub Kodak 1400 prints go from there.

edit: this is the only one that I think will work, based on another thread on this forum:

Maybe we should make a drinking game out of this to make the wait more "tolerable:"

    - Start with one shot of your favorite liquor on day 1. (beer don't count )
    - For every day that you wait, you drink one more shot of said liquor on that day.
So today, you would drink 1 shot, tomorrow 2, the next day 3, until the N+1 day when you have got your 8740w and you are recovering from drinking N shots the previous day. :twitchy:

I don't recommend drinking in the morning though, since most likely you need to work, and need to drive. :rolleyes2:

If nothing else, this would help "lessen" the increasing agony of waiting.

    Hi

I just got a quote for HP approved consultants( www.valuepoint.in) (This is the only way HP lets us purchase things here in India)

    i7 920
    4GB 2DIMM 1333MHz
    M7820
    500GB HDD
    WXGA+ Display

Price (without discounts) 1,85000 Indian rupees (~ 4500 USD)

I wanted to have the following (the rep screwed up the quote)

    i7 920
    4GB 4DIMM
    M 7820
    250GB HDD
DC1 Display (DC2 Display availability is under question)
    I am expecting this to reach 5000 $ mark.Am I being overpriced?

Also, ironically, the my rep is having trouble understanding me during the conversations.

    So.. Am I being overpriced?

Aaah.. but I just finished looking at the HP US site...

    i7 820 QM
    DC1 Display
    8 GB 4D
    250GB HDD

is coming for 4000 $ without discounts

    considering that i7 920 XM is 500-600 $ costlier than i7 820 QM, 4.5k $ seems ok...

"I would buy 2 8740W with all bells and whistles with that price."
How is it possible??? I am student... so I wont be getting corporate pricings but I would try if you can notify me of any? I would be grateful for that

    Please clarify this:

If I order 4GB 2DIMM, does that mean that system comes with 2 of the DIMM's filled or with ONLY 2 DIMMS? If it is the former case, we can just 2GB model.right?

Atleast, is that what you meant tybert7?

All quad core setups come with 4 RAM slots.
Yes, two will be filled if it says "4GB 2DIMM"

Do you explicitly need the Quadro card? If not go with the ATI which will shave another $500 off (and could even be faster depending on what you're doing with it).

Also, don't go for the extreme CPU, it's gonna give you a little boost of performance and a huge increase in heat.
    Save some $$$.

<<<<<<<<<<< Do you guys have any ideas of how big will the brokerage fees be for this system shipped from the US to Canada?

Well, if you have someone in US, who can buy it for you/you buy and ship it to US address and have them bring it to India, then there is always possibility of better pricing/deal/discounts...i can PM you the info.

If you are buying this system for serious work, then you can go for it with the higher premium in India, else it's not worth it IMHO.
Edited: Ignore my above statement..i saw your post in the notebook request thread- looks like you will be doing some serious stuff and want it reliable for few years.

Coincidentally, a bad experience with a VAIO AW 190 is what motivated me to demand the higher quality of an EliteBook. The AW was adequate for occasional use at home, but once it became my primary work machine, the annoyances and problems multiplied. Nothing was broken, but the machine is a janky plastic thing with some very poor design decisions and nonexistent support. After a month or two using the VAIO, I made the decision never to buy another consumer-class notebook. There's a reason they're cheap.

    Digressing a little.

You guys have brought up a annoyance of mine: the proliferation of fancy looking, "feature rich" (complete with rich amount of hidden bugs, which will be fixed in future releases as a NEW and IMPROVED product...) goods that has little to no consideration for reliability.

This kind of products are everywhere now (esp. thanks to *you know who*) and they irk me to no end...

Though I am more pissed off at us (me included) for supporting products that seem to be great here and now, but won't last. Besides, in a couple of months, a "next-gen" of the same product will be released anyway...

I am not going to talk about *certain company that I really dislike*, so I will just talk about the very popular ASUS G73JH right now. It is feature rich, esp. considering its cost. But from my experience at work and from years of tweaking with computer hardware, I know that there has to be corners that were cut somewhere. And thank goodness for you guys for your candid reports (most reviews are useless, since they never talk about reliability, they can't really, since they want to get the reviews out ASAP).

Though I am now a few hundred dollars poorer (since I ordered 8740w instead of the ASUS). I can at least realistically hope that it will last me for at least a year w/o something breaking all of a sudden.

BTW, I am actually a big fan of ASUS made things. They have some very innovative products and designs. But over the years, I found that the reliability of their products have declined, just like every other companies. (Esp. "thanks" to "certain company" for further marginalize the importance of reliability -- reliability doesn't sale... )

Sorry for the long rant... :D

Early in the early days of the start-up I'm still with, back in the late 90s thru "the turn of the century" [love that that saying works in this era], the folks in sales would bemoan the Dell Inspiron line. I came away from those times with the impression it should be Latitude or nothing from them [dell]. So it was surprising that I decided to get an Inspiron 1720 from them a few years back [my wife's WorkingAdvantage's EPP price was attractive]. And I must say, tho clad in all plastic, it's really quite a quality hunk of a kit. As big as it is, I'd been lugging it as my work machine for a few months, and I came away even more impressed. Dell must have been @ a peak in terms of producing quality pieces in those days.

....Now, the work issued business machine of a new gen Latitude E6500 I have and use every day that I was so excited to get? Now that's a plasticey piece of commodity computing with ridiculously loud HD slot buzz [not the HD, but the bracket & slot buzzing], palmrest that makes sounds that make me cringe @ times, speaker grill area that easily pushes in, etc. Over the years that 1720 has amassed a good deal more use than this newer E6500, but is still 'mint'. So, go figure.

If the 87*0w series's quality is upheld, as I'll basically just be using the 8740w for my D-SLR PP work in my off-hours, and web browsing, I think I may be able to sell it as NOS 5 years from now. ;)

a few models are listed in a few shops as "available" here in Europe... no one is tempted, I guess? If you choose CTO you still get a better machine but again, CTO is not available in Europe :(

But I hope to see someone's review soon...

Good luck! Make sure to bring your cell phone with you, since the credit department may call to confirm your identity. And if they can't reach you after few tries, they will cancel your order w/o you knowing. :( (I have first hand experience with this...)

Other than that, good luck. And don't get too drunk, yet. Need to keep those beers for the agonizing "wait for order to ship" period. ;)

On that note, the "extended battery" for my order just shipped, from China. Yeah, I won't be getting it anytime soon.

I paid by wire transfer, so no identity verification calls expected. Also, the rep knows that I'm in Canada now and that my preferred method of communication is via Email.
My relatives in NY will receive the package and Fedex it to Canada. The only concern is the brokerage fees.
Also, I'll need to transfer (upgrade??) the warranty to Canada at some point.

Other than that - Whoa!

This is not absolutely true. In Spain you can order a HP CTO Bussiness computer, with very few restrictions, through an approved partner. I know this because I ordered a 8730w with my desired configuration. Yes, it costs your life, I know. For me, a top-notch 8730w with T9800, DreamColor and all the whistles and bells 3901€ (that is, $5350). It's a lot of money but if you want, you can in some countries of Europe.

Where do you come from? Perhaps I can help you.

    @Aikimox: I can't believe you've purchased a 8740w without any review!
    Whoa, that's the spirit! :D

In Spain it's not available even for pre-order yet :(

It's the same in Canada, so I ordered one from the US (had to pay by wire transfer and arrange the US address for forwarding the package) Still not sure if the whole thing will work out...

This is scary, I really hope they will not cancel the current orders and say there's no DC. :(
    I'll be really upset then...

Yes, probably they'll look at who went to the most trouble in ordering one and cancel that order --- which would be yours. ;)

Actually, I think we'll be fine (though I do see delay clouds on the horizon) but it is striking how many supply issues seem to be affecting the current laptops.

Yeah, look at Lenovo's. People are waiting for 2-3 months to get their 95% RGBs. There are global shortages of high quality screens so the time is not perfect.

The backlit keyboard option has also disappeared from the configurator.

No, the situation it's not the same, it's even worse in my country, because the 8740w is NOT listed in the EliteBook line page. At least, in Canada you can see the model on the web page. If you click the link posted before, you'll see only the 8540w is available in Spain and the 8730w still appears listed on 1st position

As much as I love conspiracy theories, I am sure this is just a web site glitch or re-organization. I am sure all those options will reappear soon enough.

It is not like HP's servers has been known for their stability and consistency. ;)

Same story also in Greece. I don't know why they are so behind and don't list it.
