where you can download the drivers on the HP site there are also links to videos which describe what you need

further you can take a look at the document "HP EliteBook 8760w Mobile Workstation - Maintenance and Service Guide" but first check out the videos

Thanks so much Sotton - that's exactly what I needed! The video about removing the keyboard was particularly helpful.

My 230w Advanced Docking Station arrived last week, and I was thinking about installing a HDD in its expansion bay to use for backups. Would the following drive work?

    Seagate ST9750420AS 750GB Momentus Mobile Hard Drive - 750GB, 2.5", 7200RPM, 16MB, SATA

Standard 9.5mm in height, it will fit into any standard laptop with the SATA interface.
    Drive Type: Internal
    Interface: SATA-3G
Data Transfer Rate on Serial ATA: 300 MB/sec

Or perhaps you have other suggestions??? Thanks!

there may be a limitation of the total number of hard drives (I only know for sure that the 8730w has a limit of 3 but of course HP may have changed this)

So, it is not possible to have a RAID configured (of 2 hds) in the 8730w, another in the advanced dock and another using eSata. However, the 8730w was limited to 2 in total internal (and not 3 like the 8760w)

(USB drives should be no problem, as far as I know)

But, if you only have 1 or 2 in your 8760w and the one in the advanced docking stations you have no problem at all ;)

    Hello Guys,

I'm thinking about buying this machine soon. What's really important to me is that the machine is completely silent when it's in idle mode or under slight use like internet surfing.

So my questions to the owners of the machine: Does the fan run in idle mode? So far I'm using the HP 8710p. The fan is almost all time running, also on idle mode.

Maybe the Dell M6600 is completely silent because of using Optimus. Thinking about which machine is better for me.

I'm looking forward to use an SSD, so the machine should be completely noiseless. I read that the Alienware x17 r3 is completely noiseless when idle, using Optimus, but I don't like gaming machines with glossy displays...

    Thanks Robbilau and Sotton!

I think I'm initially going to go with the OCZ Vertex 3 240GB SSD in the disc 0 slot for the OS & applications, and move the 500GB 7200rpm HDD to disc 1 slot, for all my data files, keep the optical drive where it is, and then back-up to the 750GB 7200rpm HDD in the docking station.

Can't afford it right now, but was considering upgrading all 3 drive bays with the OCZ Vertex 3 240GB SSD's when their price drops some more.

I was at a consumer computer store and felt the keyboard of a consumer HP computer. The keyboard at least visually looks like the one on 8760w and that keyboard action is somewhat worse than on my 8710. The key travel distance is shorter, they feel somewhat hard to push and the press response is vague. Not as nice as 8710 but not really bad either.

I also got the opportunity to feel the keyboard of Sony Vaio laptops and they felt really solid and the action was almost perfect. Too bad Sony doesn't have performance monsters otherwise I would probably bought one of these.

Mine actually came with the 4GB preinstalled in the slots underneath the keyboard, so adding another 8GB was simply a matter of sliding off the service bay cover and inserting the modules. Took about 2 minutes.

Thanks [trondhindenes]. I'm not sure if mine will come with 1x4GB SODIMM or 2x2GB SODIMMs under the keyboard, but I have 4x4GB SODIMMs that I plan to fill up all 4 memory slots with (having removed whatever it comes with).

Collected my 8760w today. My concerns about the standard screen appear unfounded. The FHD has a wide viewing angle, and copes well with glare from a window directly behind me. Haven't had a chance to use Photoshop with it yet, so will report on this and Adobe Premiere CS5 next week.

I also ordered a 8760w with standard FHD screen, review with pictures when I get it.

Does anyone have any SSD recommendations? I plan on a OCZ Vertex 3, but I think the 8760w only supports ATA-300 and not ATA-600.

HP will not confirm as they only supply sata II drives and so 'have not tested sata III' per my drawn-out inquiry with HP Presales. However it has been confirmed that the interface is in fact sata III for the primary and secondary bays (on this forum, maybe even a reference in this thread). I have yet to see a benchmark of a sata III ssd, though.

according to THIS very good 8560w review the only sata2 is the eSATA (while having TWO internal sata3 ports)

edit: sorry, didn't check the thread name before commenting :) try that SATA check yourself and post your results :)

Thanks, my plan is SSD (probably Intel 510 or OCZ vertex 3) as primary and a standard HDD as secondary for storage, cheaper, but still fast.

anyone tried the Seagate Constellation 7200.2 1000GB, SATA 6Gb ?

will 1000GB work anyway? (specs are only up to 750)

Edit: I overlooked the specs, though, these are too big and other 7200 are not available

I expect that any 2,5" 1TB drive that fill the drive bay will work in the 8760W. The only reason HP doens't mention an 1TB drive option is the fact they don't have 1 for sale.

Corsair Force GT 120GB gets 440 MB/s read. However, I'm getting only 92 MB/s write from it. Will look into.

I'm running SSD in bay 0 and a standard 7200rpm disk in bay 1, overall VERY happy with this computer.

I'm not sure how many additional monitors are supported by the 3 different NVIDIA card options, but the AMD FirePro M5950 supports up to 5 displays simultaneously with AMD Eyefinity Technology (the laptop display + 4 additional monitors).

In addition to the M5950 card, you'll also need the HP 230w Advanced Docking Station, which is presently running $200 with free shipping at Buy.com.

I used the installation via a bootable USB disk. The only issue: the download is a Microsoft Windows ".exe" file. I.e., you have to have a working Microsoft Windows system to create the USB disk. Somebody at HP is not thinking clearly - you can order the 8760w without Windows - but you need a Windows system for the BIOS update???? Booting from this USB disk installs the new BIOS release. The took less than a minute and I did not see any error/warning messages.

During the next reboot I verified in the BIOS setup that my 8760w actually does have F.02 installed. Other than the version string, I did not notice any difference. I checked HP's web site for any documentation, but I could not find any information what has been updated from F.01 to F.02. Does anybody have information about this?

    I'm happy with my 8760w too :)

Two questions: What 8GiB modules did you use? And how much did you pay for it?

And a more generic question: Does anybody know if and how it is possible to change the memory timing in the BIOS?

I need a SSD for the 8760w, in the quickspecs it says that only up to 3.0 Gb/s, but a drive like Intel 510 is 6.0 Gb/s, does that mean it's not supported at full speed?

Why is 8760w shipped with 1333MHz memory when the 2.2GHz CPU model supports 1600? If you look at Dell M6600, it is shipped with 1600MHz memory and ironically it is much cheaper as well.

The 8760W will run at SATAIII speed on both hard drives slots.

I think HP have a lot of 2GB and 4GB mem modules laying around. The speed advantage of 1600Mhz over 1333Mhz is minimal in real time work so I understand their choice to use 1333Mhz mem modules.

Karel, any chance you have an Upgrade Bay you can bench one of those 510s in? Specs seem to indicate SATA I speeds for the HP Bay with 500GB drive. I'm assuming it's the drive and not the interface, would like to see what it does with a drive that can saturate it.

Any recommendations on the best docking station for the 8760w, to run a variety of peripherals including external monitor, mouse, keyboard etc. Looking at the reviews of the docking stations on HP...they don't exactly pass with flying colours.

Any news yet on how hot she runs once maxed out? Waiting to here feedback before opting for a 3rd internal drive.

The 5950 is equivalent to the Radeon 6770M (3rd best card), whereas the 7820 was equivalent to the Radeon 5870M (best card at the time)...we were hoping the 8760w would get the M8900 or Radeon 6970M...but that went out the window quickly...
