I have been looking at the Dell Latitude e6400, Lenovo T410, and the HP Elitebook 8440P. Dell is slow on the tech refresh of the Latitude and the T410 is not as solid as I would like (Plastic, Loose Battery, Squeaky Keyboard).
I am learning that you really cant customize an HP unless you don't care about the price tag. I mostly use Business Apps, Cloud Services, and Demo software/hardware products (Demos in Virtual Box Machines). My main criteria is a light weight, durable machine. Of course the faster the better!!!
An 8440P with i5-520M, Integrated Graphics, 1600x900, 4GB Ram, and 250 GB HDD is over $2K when customized.
Pre-configured with an i7-620M, NVIDIA NVS 3100 (512 MB), 1600x900, 4GB RAM, and 320 GB HDD is $1500.
Will the i7 and NVIDIA significantly reduce the battery life and run warmer?
-
afaik the core-i5 540m is more power efficient than core-i7 620; also cooler.
Another question:
Does HP 8440p feature nVidia Optimus switchable Graphics?
Or is it the same as Lenovo T410 - either integrated or discrete? -
The HP has the NVIDIA NVS 3100 graphics with 512 MB dedicated gDDR3 video memory or the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator HD
The T410 offers the NVIDIA NVS 3100m Graphics 256MB DDR3 with AMT or the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator HD - AMT -
So Video-Ram is the only difference?
-
Yes. That is the only difference
-
If they're both GDDR3, the difference in memory will not have any noticeable effect on performance.
-
Any reviews of this computer yet?
Looks like a good laptop. -
I'm also eagerly waiting reviews. I love the style of the elitebooks, and the price point if fairly decent. Here's hoping they use a decent screen.
-
Here's a quick video preview on the 8440p http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EfZidSCotTw
Some nice close-ups on the screen, overall looks great! -
I currently own a HP 6910p and in not completely satisfied with it due to its excessive noise and heat level. I hope the 8440p will be more quite. Reviews of the 8440w are saying it is a very quiet note book:
During normal use (browsing the web or working on a text document) the EliteBook 8440w remained quite cool and very quiet. The exhaust fan wasn't audible except when running performance benchmarks or stressing the CPU and graphics. You won't have to worry about bothering coworkers or clients with unwanted noise coming from your laptop in a quiet office.
Hopefully the 8440p use the same cooling system as the 8440w, and since it is possible to configure the 8440w with a quad core i7 as well I would hope that the cooling system is oversized for the dual core i7 and i5's thus making it a cool computer.
I was concidering the t410 but seeing that the cooling system is not on par with the t400 i am hoping the 8440p will come through here.
Battery time also look great: the 8440w tihe a i7 620m and the 25w TDP Quadro FX 380M and 9-cell battery was close to 7 hours. SInce the 8440p use the less power hungry nvs 3100m ( 14w TDP) I hope battery time with a i5 will be in the 7h+ region. -
I wouldn't expect there to be too much of a difference between the 8440p and 8440w. I think it's only the CPU? Let's hope we some decent reviews in the near future (although it could be a little while, sounds like their having problems just getting the things made).

Any news on whether there will be an Ati graphics option?
Unless the nVidia graphics are supported by Optimus... -

Read a little while ago on a couple different forums that there have been delays in the manufacturing of the new Elitebooks. More recently some users that have ordered the new Elitebooks ahve had their shipments delayed weeks/months. -
Here's a thread that might help. I would start on this page: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=457570&page=7
My 8440p will be here on Thursday. It was ordered on 2/1 (first day of general availability). -
-
I am hoping to get the:
Quadro NVS 3100,
Core i5-540,
2GB RAM (+ buy an additional 4gb)
320GB HDD
1366 x 768
6 cell(no 9-cell options in Norway)
There are not too many options for the 8440p in Norway where I live, and configuring it your self is not an option here. But this one looks fairy nice.
Which one did you go for? -
Hei PaAra,
I'm in Norway too and looking for this model http://www.epartner.no/HP/PartDetail.aspx?q=p:2906900;c:36159;r:easybuy
did you talk to any vendor here?
(I'm also hesitant to go for a 8540w or lenovo (T410 or W510)... -
I usually buy all my stuff from komlett, but the link you sent me was a bit cheaper but the configuration seems to be a little poorer too, except for the resolution.
I know that netshop, mpx and komplett are good, but they are not the cheapest ones out there though.
I am mainly using external monitors when I am not traveling, thus the screen resolution is not a big sale argument for me, I rather have a little more power under the hood.
http://www.epartner.no/HP/PartDetail.aspx?q=p:2906900;r:easybuy
price 1750$ (12 133 nok)
NVIDIA NVS 3100
i5 520
1 x 2 GB DDR3
250 GB
1600 x 900
6-cell
The closest option:
http://www.mpx.no/aspx/produkt/prdinfovnet.aspx?plid=115512
Price 1874$ (12990 nok)
NVIDIA NVS 3100M
i5 540
2GB x 1
320GB SATA, 7200rpm
1366 x 768
6-Cell Lithium Ion
According to Hp.no the only shop that carry the WJ683AW#ABN which you linked to is epatner (if you press the "Finn en forhandler" on the laptop all the way to the right (WJ683AW#ABN) the only store popping up is Epartner. -
Hi PAara, I won't be using a monitor myself (not in the near future anyway), so I'm big into screen real-estate.
I started my model search through HP.no but soon realised that the buy now option is limited. I used the reference WJ683AW#ABN (or any reference that I want) in google and got most of the shop that are carrying the product.
Issue is I can't find my perfect machine with i5-540.. so will settle with the i5-520.
Check advance.no they have a good selection too. But nothing seems to be available until March 12th... -
The i5 520 is only about 4,5% slower then the i5 540, so I doubt you will notice any difference. But I also would love to find "the perfect" configuration.
I guess we just have to be patient. -

Intel Core i5 M 520 @ 2.40GHz 2524
Intel Core i5 M 540 @ 2.53GHz 2318
Intel Core i7 M 620 @ 2.67GHz 2336
Intel Core i7 720QM @ 1.60GHz 3274
Intel Core i7 820QM @ 1.73GHz 3615
Intel Core i7 920XM @ 2.00GHz 4066
Those results look mighty strange. The only probable reason I can think of for the 520 performing better then the i540 is if they maxed the CPU core and GPU core simultaneously during the test and that this would cause the 540m processor to downclock its cpu core to remain under 35w TDP, while the 520 could continue at max or overboost speed ????
Here are some results from notebookcheck
Here the i5 520m produce a higher frame rate then the i5 540m, but this is probably because the integrated intel GMA HD chip is used and that the cpu core use a bit more power leaving the GPU core with a bit less power to do its task and still using less the the TPD of 35w
Total system power consumption. -
Also, screen seems to be better on HP than thinkpad. Well I'm still hoping to get so real life pictures or video to confirm that.
E. -
I'm also looking at the 8440p. The only thing putting me off right now is the high CTO pricing.. 1736 USD base price!
Anyone know of HP's habits with pricing? Are these likely to come down a bit any time soon? -
They are nice for movies, but for a business laptop 16:9 is useless. Strange choice by HP, but I guess no one is making 16:10 or 4:3 any more. -
New, brief review:
http://blogs.technet.com/keithcombs/archive/2010/03/10/hp-elitebook-8440p-first-impressions.aspx
It's a bit amateur - apparently he doesn't know about the keyboard light, and he seems to treat the windows experience scores as some kind of benchmark? -
-
What benchmarks are you looking for? 620M CPU based benchmarks should be pretty much identical since the CPU performance doesn't change.
-
I'm thinking the big 15.6" machines that just came out are TOO big and powerful. -
The CPU performance for the 14" and 15" will be similar from the i5-520M to i7 720QM (including those in between - the 540M and 620M). But if you work on CPU intensive programs, the only 14" that supports better, would be the HP Elitebook 8440w (820QM).
The only real difference in power will be the GPU, since 14" will use business entry level cards (64-bit GDDR3), while 15" will use business mainstream and high end cards (128-bit GDDR3 or GDDR5). The increase in GPU power is offset by the weight (need better cooling). -

**EDIT:
Regarding the display, the 8440w is discussed here. It seems to have the same 1600x900 anti-glare HD+ display as the 8440p, I believe (correct me if wrong).
They say, "At 1600 x 900 pixels, this 720p high-definition display is perfectly usable and features good color and contrast. The LED-backlit panel offers excellent brightness and we typically left the brightness set to between 50% and 70% when using the notebook indoors."
Continuing on, they add, "Horizontal viewing angles are pretty good and you only start to notice some color shift after you get more than 75 degrees off center. Vertical viewing angles are only average as the screen begins to wash out from above and colors begin to invert from below after about 45 degrees in either direction." -
I guess he opened task manager, looked at the Performance tab "w00t, 4 cores?" and typed it in the review

Another question I realized as I was considering this laptop... does anyone know if a displayport to hdmi cable will allow audio to pass through as well? I am interested in hooking up my (future) laptop to my television and it'd be preferable to get audio and video through the same connection.

Any first hand impressions yet ?

New Elitebook are starting to pop up on eBay... Hoepfully it's a sign that they are starting to ship.
Here in norway, the ETA has been pushed 3 times from 3/12 to 3/30 now (and I fear that it'll change again during the week).
And still no "w" series for European customers.. -
-
I'll let you guys know!
EDIT: Wow, it got QUIET here... is everyone on pins and needles waiting for the scoop? lol.
EDIT2: Some other links for 8440p discussion:

I just received my 8440p yesterday.
This notebook is incredible. So fast and so quiet.
The Keyboard is great to type on.
The only issue I am having is getting Windows 7's Biometrics Feature to locate the Sensor. HP now uses "Validity Sensor" instead of AuthenTec/Digital Persona" - Driver installs, shows up in Device Manager properly & it is enabled in BIOS. But still the Biometrics option won't show up in Windows 7.
If anyone does get their fingerprint sensor to work on Windows 7 let me know. -
Oh, you are the 1st or maybe 2nd "real" owner of a 8440p.
I'd love to hear more of your impressions.
But unfortunately I can't provide any help on the sensor issue... -
I got my 8440p a couple of weeks ago.. After installing Win7 (x64), I had some issues with the Fingerprint Sensor as well. Turns out I needed to install 'HP ProtectTools Security Manager' from the System Restore CD.
I didn't put a whole lot of time into investigating, so there may be alternate ways to get it working.
