I'm getting a tremendous amount of BSOD's on a continuous basis lately, after installing Office 2007 on the Win 7 Pro 32 bit system.
I keep getting Stop "0x000000c4 (0x000000, 0x000000, 0x000000, 0x000000)" almost every time I turn it on the last day or so. I'm going to have our tech guy look at it tomorrow, as it is odd for it to come up so soon after purchase.
Perhaps I got another HP lemon, as I did when I had a consumer grade model?

Remember BSOD's can't be caused by apps like Office, only drivers/kernel or bad hardware.
..so a lemon is a definite possibility :-( -
8440p is my first Elitebook and it definitely lives up to expectations. It runs smoothly Win7 Ultimate 64 bit and Office 2010 Professional 64 bit - without a glitch so far (config: i5 520M, nVidia NVS 3100M, upgraded to 4GB RAM).
To nikolayhg: in mine the fan is quite silent, some white noise when plugged in, almost inaudible on battery. May I suggest you should change Advanced Power Options/[Desired profile]/Processor power management/System cooling policy/Plugged in from Active to Passive, see if things improve.
One question to community wisdom: I am used to achieve wake up from stand by immediately on lid open, without having to press the power button. I close/open the lid a lot and would like to have instant wake up, or at least achieve the same by hitting any key or the touchpad Does anyone know what needs to be configured to get this? Both keyboard and touchpad apparently lack power management support in device manager. -

To provide an update, I haven't had any issues since running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit. I did have to do a phone activation though, as the key gave me issues from the software install side.
No BSOD's since Win 7 64 bit. -
I already posted this in the owners forum but anyways, another review of the HP 8440w by Notebookcheck. It earns a great 92%

there is a new bios version available for the 8440p/w:
F.07
HP EliteBook 8440p Notebook PC- HP Notebook System BIOS Update (ROM Family 68CCU) - HP Business Support Center
but the problem with the fan running like nuts still exists. i've just flashed the new version and nothing was spent on this
i've uploaded a video on youtube about the fan issue
YouTube - Elitebook 8440p very loud fan after standby (S3) -
yeah, mine sounds also like that ... sometimes it is annoying especially when all around is silent. BIOS updates didn't help.

it checks the lights level around you and adjust the screen brightness accordingly.
(I find it mildly useful though) -

Wondering if anybody has seen any deals on an 8440p lately? I'm looking into one to replace my W3J, but elitebooks are a little pricey; I wish it came with the 1600x900 screen on at least one of the ready to ship versions...

Hi everybody,
I am from Germany and would like to buy a 8440p from an US site recommended by antsiou:
http://www.shopblt.com/cgi-bin/shop...000100U0110_BCM6200P.shtml&order_id=193751579
The ones of you in the same situation (from Europe, and buying from US), how much tax did you pay and how was that handled (did you pay the tax at the post office, wired the money to the customs, etc.)?
Also, do you know of any good deals at this momement for this laptop?
Thank you for your feedback. -
for those who are interested:
i've received two BIOS versions (F.09 and F.0A) for the 8440p
both versions solved the problem with the loud fan after Suspend to RAM / "Sleep" mode
so it should not take too long until this versions are officially released -
I'm wondering if anybody can help me out here, I'm looking at getting an 8440p but I noticed something a bit odd when looking at the models...
I'm looking at the WH257UT and the WH260UA. They seem pretty identical except for the WH260UA has an i5 processor, 2GB of ram and 250 GB HDD instead of the WH257UT's i7, 4GB ram and 320 gb HDD. Yet, the WH260UA is priced about $400-$500 more.
It looks to me like for more money you are getting weaker specs... Is there something I'm missing or does somebody know why this is? -
HP has screwy prices sometimes...

Some people think that it was a spot holder for something in the future.

Does the bottom of the 8440p is made of plastic or magnesium?
Thx -
it's plastic
-
Does anybody know which SSD (the 160GB version) HP builts into the 8440p?
