I also have the nycomputek dvd caddy from ebay.
It wasn't being recognized on Windows on my hp probook 450 g1 but when inserted I also experienced the big delay in shutdown.
It was being recognized on Linux, but wasn't reliable on sleep.

So I cleanly pulled the pin, but now the drive isn't recognized at all
    IMG_20140321_155834.jpg
    I pulled the wrong pin?

Can someone point to a drive caddy that will surely work? Thanks

This is my first post here. I also want to apologize for any misspellings English is not my native language.

I have read the entire thread and I have the same problem as the others but can not come up with solution.

I decided to use tape on the third pin instead cuting it by hand (call me cautious). When I turn on pc, it does not see the disk. When I removed the tape, drive is visible again, but the problem returns. If the trick with the tape didn't work cutting the pin would've been time consuming and hard to fix.

My PC is Asus K56cm with Windows 8.1. I attached photos but they seems to be the same as those from post # 2 with one exception. My circuit board does not have the model name printed on the SATA connector.

    Any help appreciated.

I have no words to say how thankful I am, I had sleepless nights 15days trying all methods but none helped but this forum.

I tried updating drivers, managed to unplug everything out and tried, tried installing various versions of windows, tried different driver update products etc.

Finally when I found this post, I was bit doubtful but this 3rd pin solution has resolved my problem.

My thanks to you all for this post.

I tried all this keywords in google to search for solution but none helped.

Just signed up to say thanks!
Simply covering the evil sata connector pin with a tiny bit of tape was enough.
Used this on a second-hand hp 8460p I just bought, not being able to reboot / shut down was driving me crazy.

Dude, as awkward as it may seem, you have no idea how much I want to hug you right now! I registered to this forum only to thank you. I saw this little white thing but i had no idea that it was a switch or that it could solve my problem. Thank you very much!

Wow ! I don't know how I found this thread but I created account just to answer :p
My problem was on a SONY Vaio Laptop, I just bought in november 2015 a caddy from eBay and on windows 60% of CPU usage, tried to revert to windows 8.1, same problem, tried to see in BIOS or anything that could hepl... Nothing worked. And on ubuntu cpu1 : 100% cpu2 : 10%.

Finaly I just moved the small which switch what was on the left to the right side and it works ! Didn't even need to remove HDD, with a small screwdriver I was able to move the switch..

Thanks a lot everyone, I think moving switch is enough but thank you everyone again !

Thank you very much, centaurian! This fix indeed worked like a charm for the caddy I got from Aliexpress for my ASUS K55VD. Unfortunately this caddy didn't have any switches like some people in this thread mentioned, so I had to remove the pin using a sharp head screwdriver.

I got so inspired that even made a little video on how I did it:

P.S. Now if I was getting another caddy, I would search for an already modified one. So the lesson for me is not to always buy the most popular product on Aliexpress.

I just bought a caddy from Amazon and it seems to be a newer revision where they changed the position of the switch, which is now on the longer side of the caddy. The function is the same as before, in the position towards the outside SATA interface (left if looking directly onto the switch) the diagnostic pin is connected, in the other position (right, like on the photo) the pin is not connected.
Just updating this thread so you guys don't have to open your caddy to find the correct position. ;)

Well i created an account in this forum just so that i can say thank you!!! If it wasn't for people like you who would share all this information with the world, i and apparently so many others would be scr*wed...

I have a Windows 8 ASUS K55 laptop PC, to which I have connected the 12,7mm caddy (no switch). I got my 1TB drive in it and the SSD in the normal drive. I did the swap around 2, 3 weeks ago and since yesterday everything was working fine, I was able to put the laptop to SLEEP, RESTART and SHUT-DOWN. Until at some point I could not. Doing any of the 3 tasks would turn the screen off and the lights and power button LED would remain ON together with the fans. After a while like that, the laptop would heat up and the only way to shut it down was to hold the power button for a few seconds.

I thought of partition problems, boot sector problems and what not, until I inserted the Caddy just by it self with not HDD inside. The issue persisted.
So today I found various forums which eventually led me here.... I decided to risk it and cut off the pin as on the photo in the SECOND post on the 1st page, doing so fixed the problem and now it works perfectly once AGAIN!!! :D

Thank you SO MUCH centaurian for this solution, I would have never thought of such thing, ever... One thing I cannot understand is WHY did it all work fine for a few weeks and it stopped yesterday???

P.S. sorry for some words being capital, i thought that this might help others in the future who might search for a solution, to find this topic faster.

More helpful search tags to lead others here: WINDOWS DOES NOT CANNOT WON'T SHUT DOWN RESTART SLEEP CADDY SSD HDD LAPTOP LIGHTS FAN ON POWER BUTTON SCREEN OFF HEAT.

As others, I signed up just to say "Thank you for this information!"

I actually ran across a link to this post on another Web site; however, this post contained much more technical information than the other (which was just a "here's where I found this out").

Thank you, Centaurian for the original fix and technical info...and thank you, ilyutza for finding the switch option, which mine had (although in black instead of white).

With my new Neuftech caddy it took 1-2 minutes before my 2560p totally shut down. When I disactivated fast boot in bios (bios mode, not uefi) and in windows 10, it now takes max 5 seconds after the display has got black (dip switch of the caddy set to hp)

My Neuftech 2nd 2.5'' HDD SSD Caddy has got a dip-switch for Sony. However no guarantee, that this one works with your Sony laptop. But it's a pretty solid caddy.

    Greetings,
I found this thread googling around to troubleshoot my problem with high CPU usage while a DVD to HDD adapter is plugged into my ASUS ROG laptop. I found out from here, that I am supposed to cut a pin in SATA connector, so I took the cover off my adapter ready to do it. I found a switch, suspiciously close to that PIN, and when I look under magnifying glass it appears that one of the switch connectors is linked to that SATA diagnostic PIN I was supposed to cut. So I just threw the switch and all problems gone! This adapter is made by Akasa, I bought it at our local store, but they seem to have figured these problems out. The switch has 3 positions, so I think it will work on many machines, depending on that configuration. Moreover, it turns out, you don't even have to take the cover off the adapter, the switch sticks out next to where the HDD is supposed to be, it's just very tiny you wouldn't notice it, unless you know it's there.

In the meantime I have bought second caddy, thinking the first one is defective. They both are not. Furthermore, they both have the switch (the second, cheaper one has it only with 2 positions, on the corner of the case, sticking out to the left, not inside the casing).

PS. Sorry, I don't know how to shrink that image.

    My Problem SOLVED

    Notebook - HP Zbook 15 (G1)
Upgrade bay (in optical drive slot) - Akasa N.Stor (AK-OA2SSA-NKV2) - Mounting SSD kingston 256gb

I had same problem with restartng/truningoff system. This solution is 100% working. I expect this solution to apply to all other models of all brands.
The surprise to me was that the reduction actually has a built-in switch for breaking the bad pin.

HUGE THAKS !!! All of you. !!!
