Some of the preinstalled software, like bluray/dvd-player, cannot be reinstalled from HP downloads.

You need original install dvd with the software, then upgrade them to latest versions from HP website. I found out that the hard way when I got my first physical bluray disc for ages.

BTW, in the meantime the Windows 10 update is available for the ZBook 15 G1. Also the HP support site lists device drivers etc. for Windows 10 64-bit for the ZBook 15.

As anybody here upgraded a ZBook 15 to Windows 10?

Yes, after I had downgraded to Win 7. All drivers work, though I did encounter the occasional reboot and other minor flaws.

I use 8.1 on my real portable, so I am used to the feel of it. Still, Win 10 is too much for me. Forced upgrades are annoying, background downloads are suspect, benefits over 8.1 are theoretical right now, esp. because I always use a 3rd party shell.

So I am happily back to 7.

I had no troubles upgrading my Zbook15 G2 from Win 7 to 10. It asked me to uninstall one piece of HP software, but I don't remember what it was.

Newbie poster here - and I'm delighted to find this forum!

I'm looking seriously at either the Zbook 15 G2 (F1M37UT most likely) or the Zbook 17 G2 (K4K42UT) for my IT, tax and accounting practice and am interested in users' longer-term satisfaction with their units. I've read a *lot* of reviews from magazines, some from users, including IT pros, and think that either of these machines is a better choice than the Dell Precision M4800. I'm replacing a Dell Precision M6600, my aging 17" tank workhorse and am looking for something equally strong, robust and tough, reliable, expandable, and reasonably speedy. (Not a gamer but lots of calculating and database work.)

Most of the people on this thread seem to like their units, with (it seems) very few significant problems. I'm in Canada so maintenance support is important if needed, but more important is a relatively trouble-free unit. I've read comments about bad speakers and screen whistling, the odd DOA, but nothing about longer-term happiness.

If any of you care to share your overall impressions, I'd be thankful. (And it is Canadian Thanksgiving today!)

    NM - just purchased a 17 G2 on ebay.

Hi everyone! I recently had to reformat my Zbook 15 and reinstall windows using the recovery disk I made, however I saw that the hp wallpapers were now gone. I'd really appreciate it if someone could send me the HP wallpapers that came with the Zbook 15, thanks! Please send to [email protected]

Launch HP Softpaq Download Manager, there is probably one download item called HP Wallpaper or similar to that.

My zBooks esc-key is remapped and now provides the HP-system information, with external key-boards the esc-key works.

Does anyone know how to get the esc function back without having todo a reinstall from an image?

    External controller Hardware on zBooks
Does anyone use thunderbolt- or express-ports. While I did not find any worthwhile Thunderbolt hardware that work under windows or are worth their price, I use eSATA 1 expresscards to access two 6 TB WD-HDD.

I have been looking for a bootcapable eSATA 3 expresscard controller, but did not find any in Europe, preferably with multiplier support.

I also use USB 3 Hubs, 7 to 10 ports, to connect SATA HDD via eSATA to USB bridges. Not all bridges support HDD larger than 2 GB. If the eSATA to USB bridge does not support drives larger than 2 GB, the drive Manager shows those drives as raw. Using a eSATA to USB bridge that supports HDD larger than 2 GB the HDD is identified. The only problems is that sometimes a drive drops out, but I could not determine if it is fault of the eSATA to USB bridge or the USB 3.0 Hub.

Did you (or anyone else) find out what the "no upgrade bay" option means? Does it just mean nothing is in the bay so that you can always add a drive there later, or does it mean there's no bay at all so you can't add any drive later?

EDIT: I found it ... there is a setting in the computer bios under "Advanced" where one can set the keyboard back light time out. Included in the selection list is a "Never" option ...

Quick question for any HP Zbook 15 G2 owners ...

I am wondering if there is a way to make the keyboard backlighting remain on all the time. By default the keyboard back lighting dims after about 30 seconds and I have to either touch the trackpad or press a key to get the light to come back on.

Is there a way to make the keyboard backlight stay on constantly?

    Thanks!

My ZBook 17 G2 which I just received came with a LG BU20N. Looks like it has worse specs than the UJ262.

    Hello, gentlemen.
Could anybody suggest me a display part to replace the current SHP141C in my G2? The current screen is totally suck in all aspects (obvious tinting, bad white uniformity, bad angles, terrible anti-glare coating and it is really dull in general). Is there any way to "downgrade" it to a good Full HD IPS display?

    * NEW DRIVES (Memory/Msata/HDD/SSHD) UPDATE HELP? *

    Hello fellow Zbookrs,

Allthough the new thin model looks attractive, I've been loving my Zbook for two years now. I bought it to last, so it's time for some updates as my work load and intensity require some more power. I'm looking for some advice for upgrading disks, as all the drive differences don't make sense to me and I'm sure someone here could point out what will suit me the most...

    Currently running
    Windows 8
    CPU i7-4700MQ 2,40GHz
    RAM 2x4GB Crucial - PC3-12800 So-Dimm
mSATA Intel 530 Series 240GB (C:// with windows and all my applications
SATA Standard HP HDD 500gb 7200rpm (think it's a travelstar) (T:// with all my documents&files)

    What I Do/Want
As an creative entrepreneur I multi-task between a lot of apps like Illustrator, Photoshop, Premiere, Lightroom together with a lot of open Chrome-research tabs. I also play around with music software like Ableton & Traktor... The problems I run into lately is that very big files in Illustrator become laggy, same goes for Premiere and editing lots of pictures in Lightroom... beside that my HDD is running full so I'd like a capacity update, the mSATA C-drive is 60% filled.

Say my budget is sub 500Euro, what would be the best combo? (I just did some googling so am not set on any of the products listed below)

    New setup

    CPU 4x8GB Corsair Vengeance Pro - DDR3-2133 or maybe the 4x8GB G.Skill Ripjaws 32GB DDR3-1866
Now for the Harddrives I'm not sure what would work best for me..
    - Changing the 500Gb 7200rpm HDD - to something else HDD maybe even bigger but slower like a 4TB which runs at 5200RPM
    - Changing the 500Gb 7200rpm HDD - to a 1TB SSHD from Seagate?

    - Updating the mSATA to 500gb?

So, obviously 4TB could work in my favor as I do use some external disk drives to place older files, but I like to keep my full music collection on board.. But bigger HDD's are slower than what I'm currently running and I think I need speed, or will switching to 5200 with the increase of CPU still become speedier? And/or do I need to upgrade the mSATA SDD as well?

    Thanks to all of you!

OWYEAH Where is the Thunderbolt Dock? been waiting since november :-s

I picked up one of these from an IT factory outlet as a temp 'lighter' replacement for my ageing 8740W.

For giggles, i put it in my 8740W's docking station.

and.... it works flawlessly. The dock powers fine, it engages the Bluray drive i have in the optical doc, the USB ports all work, as do the older ports Parallel etc (this is an old 'advanced' docking station) the Quadro K1100 even recognises the DP+ ports and can send audio (7.1 i might add!) to my A/V receiver via an HDMI adapter.

    I couldn't believe it either.

The dock sometimes forgets it's there if you plug into it with the laptop being on. it seems the more modern quadro needs to be cold booted in the doc for it to work properly.

but yea, quite shocked my 6 year old docking station works with this 2014 machine.

    I don't have the G3 but I have the 17" G2. The 15" might be more portable but if I were getting a 4K Dreamcolor screen I would want a 17".

Has anyone had trouble with their Zbook 15 Dreamcolor display having a distorted image or dropping the built in display entirely upon resuming the machine? I am running the latest bios (1.35A), and it happens on Windows 7 / 10 and Ubuntu 16.04. HP support thinks its the panel itself, but is saying that a replacement panel is back-ordered until late September.

I can generally get the display back if the image is distorted, by suspending / resuming over and over again, but if it drops off completely then the only way to recover the machine is a hard shut down or hooking up an external display (if I am near one) and restarting.

Hi, I have an Issues with the Zbook 15 G3 audio.

I have installed all the drivers but it seems like the sound will randomly just stop working. Its completely random. Sometimes in windows, sometimes when back from sleep.

A reboot always fixes it but this is very disappointing considering the audio quality is so great.

    anyone have this happen?

    Hi Everyone,

I was able to get my hand on two 15" G1 Z books, and I was wondering if anyone has any experience with upgrading the MXM card to something more current like either AMD's Polaris or Nvidia's Pascal architectures?

shows someone upgrading their system with a MXM-A Geforce GTX 965m which uses Nvidia's previous generation Maxwell Architecture

*I know the laptop is only designed to take MXM-A cards but I was thinking that MXM-A and B seem to have screw holes in the same place and I would have enough space for much better MXM-B card if I dremeled away the optical drive sata connector

Based on my experience with the Gtx 1070 notebook mxm If the EC of the system board can't properly read your GPU's temp it will probably assume the worst and rate your GPU temp as 85c the fan will default to 100% unless you over ride it with a fan control program YMMV

    Hi guys.
Got a ZBook 15 with k610m. I noticed that it had a few pixels (1 pixel line maybe 1 cm long), periodically flickering in a line on the bottom left edge of the screen (under the windows 10 start logo).

Was only a few pixels. When I disabled Quadro and ran intel only - the issue disappeared. Obviously just a few pixels are affected. Though is this an early sign of graphics failure?

I just picked up a ZBook 15 refurbished from OfficeDepot.com for $369. It has a 4800MQ and Quadro K1100M and it works great. I replaced the crappy mechanical HDD with a 1TB Samsung SSD and that really perked it up. This fan control software works great as well. Thanks for sharing that back in 2014. :)

This machine is old, but it great shape and the build quality is impressive. For $369 it beats the stuffing out of the Samsung turdbook that I paid a lot more for, then returned for a refund because it was so wimpy. For the price, hard to beat. Anything newer in the sub $1000 price range is pure garbage.

This happens on mine as well. Sometimes it's very noticeable, sometimes I don't mind. My K610m has crashed multiple times in the past, mostly when playing PUBG Mobile on the official emulator. I really hope it doesn't die on me, the integrated graphics are much weaker.

EDIT 1: BTW, has anyone tried to upgrade a Zbook 15 G1 with a GTX965m? What about the M2200? I've been looking into upgrading my rig for better gaming performance.

EDIT 2: My zbook came with only two ram slots. Has anyone tried to install 16GB modules on this model? It would be very helpful to know :)

If anyone that has an old notebook with a weak GPU is looking for something fun to play, Singularity runs great on my old HP ZBook 15 with a Quadro K1100M (very weak) and it delivered a steady 55-70 FPS with all of the graphical settings enabled. I recorded this on my desktop, but I tested it last night for roughly an hour on the ZBook 15 and it was perfect. It's an old title, but still a good game if you are not familiar with it.

What's a reasonable price to pay for a 230W docking station?

Prices for them on ebay seem to be a total rollercoaster, ranging from 15 all the way up to 200 bucks. Attached is a screenshot of what I believe is a scam.

Hard to say. The seller has good feedback and 193 sales, so it doesn't have the appearance of a scam on that basis. Have you checked for recent feedback and what the items sold were.

I've checked but it still looks fishy. Nearly perfect positive feed back from people buying random, unrelated pieces of electronics at similarly suspicious prices. Also, the seller doesn't take returns, that should be a red flag.

I know $20 is not that much, but I live abroad and having such item shipped to me would take time and probably cost more than the product itself hehe.

EDIT: these look like more reasonable deals. At least the sellers are willing to take returns. The factory sealed one is pretty tempting, should be new and include all accesories but is very costly, nearly 4 times as much.

I just ordered a customized HP Zbook 15 G5 Mobile Workstation. I want to get a second power supply, but, like others have said on this forum, the HP site makes it virtually impossible to find the right item. So, I emailed the HP parts dept. This is what they indicated I needed:

    150 watt Power Supply L32661-001 - $110
    Power cord 213349-009 - $25.77

The power supply is crazy-expensive, and the power cord is just a short 3-wire standard power cord that Amazon sells for $7.99. It's a joke that they're selling it for $25.77 (and that doesn't include shipping!).

I don't see anyone else selling the OEM power supply - and there appears to only be one company selling a compatible one (from the UK). I'd prefer to get the OEM power supply, but, $110 seems crazy.

Has anyone else used any other power supplies with the G5?

Here's this one from Amazon. I bought an aftermarket battery for my ZBook 15 (original finally failed) and it works great.

I don't know, and I would suspect it may not matter unless the laptop does not correctly identify it. I believe my old Alienware 330W AC adapter will also work on my ZBook 15. The connector is the same size.

Hi, I just got a HP Zbook 15 G2 and was wondering if there's any kind of limitation when it comes to the M.2 SSD slot. Thanks in advance.

Hi. I think you will find some relevant information over here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...s-to-z-turbo-drive.769103/page-3#post-9967647

Other than the MXM 3.0A handicap, I really like my ZBook 15 a lot. The K1100M is pretty pathetic, and 965M (max upgrade due to the beyond obsolete form factor) isn't much to get excited about. But, it's an excellent daily driver and built like a brick house. I hope you enjoy yours, too.

Seems any M.2 PCIe would do. As for GPU I don't think a can get a 960M since they're pretty expensive (the MXM 3.0a version), but I got an eye on the Quadro M2000M, looks like a nice upgrade to play some games and work with Adobe AE.

    Thanks!!

Just in case anyone needs it, here is technical white paper from the HP Zbook 15 G2, which seems HP vanished from their website. PDF
