the 2nd M2 can be either SATA or PCIe it looks like - also the system has dual fan cooling
-
-
This review (with photo of the machine's guts) says it only has one fan for two heat pipes: http://www.tomsitpro.com/articles/hp-zbook-studio-hands-on,1-3028.html
-
that photo is definitely not the ZBook Studio - looks like the ZBook 15u which is dual core machine.
HP's press release indicates dual cooling fans and the product video on its site shows the inside with two cooling fans

Hope this helps
looks like that reviewer site needs to update their content

Good to know. Thanks. Anyone know of any genuine photos of a Zbook Studio's guts?
-
This is the only photo of the ZBook Studio's internals which I have found so far.

See pages 20-21 of the QuickSpecs for a list of the drive types. The "Z Turbo Drives" are all SM951 NVMe. (Confirmed by email exchange with HP.) The 128GB and 256GB SSD options simply recite (slow!) TLC with interface of ATA-8 SATA 3.0. Page 8 of the QuickSpecs distinguishes a SATA drive controller for SATA-3 drives, and "HP Z Turbo Drive" controller for PCIe NVME SSD, with RAID 1 and RAID 0 as options. My sales rep thought there were only those two 2280 storage slots, but wasn't sure. No spinners in the Studio.
There are two SODIMM slots, page 8 of the QuickSpecs (they appear to be north of the battery in the techradar pix). Max RAM is 32GB.Last edited: Dec 20, 2015 -
Does anyone know if any of these machines have the kind of Matrix-RAID BIOS that the larger Dell Precisions have? With these, you could set up mixed RAID arrays where you had both RAID0 and RAID1 volumes available at the same time, so you could have your system and programs on a fast RAID0 array, and have a second RAID1 volume for keeping your data secure. Would be awesome to have that capability in an Ultrabook. The Precision 5510 can't do that, since they can't have two identical drives.
-
I don't think we'll see any more detail about RAID until HP puts the OM online.
If any of the ZBooks G3s would have Matrix RAID, it would be the "business" 17. It has 2 2.5" spinner bays and 2 M.2 2280 sockets (and 4 RAM slots for up to 64GB). The QuickSpecs are otherwise silent.

The specs page (in HTML) is now posted. This appears to be the same info in the PDF version which has been up for a while.
http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c04888991
Does anyone know which broadband modules are supported by the ZBook Studio? The specs indicate that the machine supports broadband and GPS with an additional card--but don't mention which card is needed. -
What the hell that advertisement hahahahahaha
-
they are releasing 3 different types of the zboook studio, correct?
which one is this model?

why does HP not publish the specific details of the components in the cart?
is the price for that configuration acceptable for 4000 usd ? -
My guess is it allows HP to have flexibility if some particular brand of component is not available.
No need to announce a new line of Zbooks if there suddenly is no Hynix ram chips for a month. -
That config is very close to (and maybe exactly the same) as the $2899 preconfigured model which ships next week. The custom configs, for whatever reason, seem to be about 30% or so more expensive than the identical standard-configuration models.
-
So, does anyone know what brand and model of SSD they use for that "PCIe Z Turbo Solid-State Drive"? Is that a Samsung 951? A 950 Pro? Something else? Any ETA for the 1TB drives?
-
The Z Turbo drives are based on Samsung SM951, which is similar to the performance of Samsung Pro 950 drives.

Their linux support still remains a question though.

The ZBook Studio's Service Manual is now online with lots of details!
http://h20565.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/...934839&docId=emr_na-c04925075&docLocale=en_US
Here are some cool tidbits from the manual.
- The non-DreamColor display is 340 nits, just like the DreamColor display.
- The touchpad has an image-sensor, and is made of glass with chemical etched surface.
- One USB 3.0 port on the left and both USB-C ports on the right are charging ports (when power is off).
- The machine has one PCIe (M.2) SSD slot and one presumably 2.5" SATA SSD/HDD slot. From photos that I have seen and custom-configuration options, I believe that a second PCIe (M.2) SSD can be installed in the space where the 2.5" drive goes. The machine does support RAID, presumably best with two PCIe M.2 SSDs.
- At first glance, the display is replaceable. So when the DreamColor displays are available, we should be able to very carefully and very gently upgrade our displays. TBD. DreamColor display PNs are 840945-001 without webcam, 840946-001 with webcam.
- Core i7 = Non-ECC RAM, Xeon = ECC RAM. HP is not pulling a Dell here with all-non-ECC RAM.
- The ZBook Studio marketing materials, store description and documentation all talk about an optional built-in WWAN card. The manual shows how to replace it and even mentions which labeled wires/connections to use. But the manual also does not show that the notebook actually has antennas for a WWAN broadband card. So the jury is still out on this one. Built-in WWAN would be so so awesome.

The Service Guide says that the ZBook Studio officially supports RedHat Enterprise Linux 6.x and 7.x.
-
Excellent news! If it runs old redhats, it'll run anything.. Thanks
-
No idea what you are talking about on this one. Dell's Xeon machines do use ECC RAM.
That said, I like the ZBook Studio better than the Dell Precision 5510:
- Optional RAID storage, with two bays=up to 2TB of storage
- It has a decent keyboard layout with dedicated Home/End and PgUp/PgDown keys. Dell has completely f***ed up their keyboard layout (on all of their new Precisions...)
- More USB and TB ports
- No dongles: This is huge, IMO, for a machine of that size. This machine has a regular ethernet port, and regular HDMI port. Awesome!
- Better sound, presumably, with larger and better placed speakers,
- I like the HP dock which has a connector that includes the regular power connector, so no issues with limited power supply.
- Once the DreamColor display is available, possibly better display. Too bad it's not available in FHD resolution; I find UHD unusable on Windows machines of that size. Windows itself, and many, many applications just don't handle high-DPI displays.
Downsides are
- the larger footprint, but I'm fine with that; the machine is still plenty compact,
- the Dell can be configured with a larger battery (and limited storage options in that case) if this is your primary concern,
- price...; well, I happen to not worry about that too much, but a roughly 30% increase in advertised price is steep.
Bottom line, for me, for now: This is the machine to get, but I can wait until whenever that time in H1 2016 may be when all the options become available, including the better Xeon processor with Iris Pro graphics. By that time there should be some reviews as well, so I will know better what it is I'm buying. While the amount of cash by itself is a non-issue for me, I am not one to be wasting money on a device that does not perform to my expectations. On the other hand, if the ZBook Studio convinces this skeptical Dell user, I may replace my 17" Precision with the next-generation 17" ZBook also, in particular since the new keyboard layout that Dell has chosen is unacceptable to me. In that class therefore Lenovo's P70 would be my only alternative anyway.Last edited: Dec 29, 2015 -
P.S.: That link of yours doesn't work, and ends up at a "not found" page. I tried to search for the manual myself, with no luck.
P.S.: Update: Found the manual here. I checked my link, and it doesn't work either. At the page where my link takes you, you'll have to search for "ZBook Studio", and then you'll get the manual. -
Unfortunately not the Precision 5510. It's a Xeon machine but does not support ECC memory. Here's the official word from Dell:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...10-twin-of-xps15.781031/page-22#post-10154661Last edited: Dec 29, 2015 -
Very true. Except for DisplayPort, although a lot of the new USB-C machines seem to be going that way. In theory you just use a USB-C to DisplayPort cable, since the Thunderbolt port has built-in USB-C support. If we had HDMI 2.0 (to support protected 4K encodings like 4K Blu-ray) we'd have the bees knees
I have mixed feelings on this. The service manual shows that the speakers are pretty small, occupying the bottom of the "speaker grills" on each side of the notebook. But that's really not unusual. HP played up the accurate audio on this machine so I have high hopes. They have B&O branding on the machine--so at least they tried. Dell used to do that really well, but the front-firing speakers on the Precision 5510 fell a ways from that tree.
Yeah, that's honestly my #1 concern about the ZBook Studio. Can't wait to see one in person. It's basically as large as a 5-year-old 15.6" laptop, but half as thick. I think the thinness will help a lot in this regard.
A bigger battery on the ZBook Studio would be amazing. There's plenty of room there if they had made it an option (filling the space of a 2.5" SSD). The weight specification section in the service manual actually talks about a bigger battery--but I think that's a cut-and-paste error from another datasheet since it also talks about weight with a "dual-core processor" and with an "optical drive"
Yowsa. Hopefully you can call in to do the custom configs and get a discount that brings them in-line with the off-the-shelf configs. The $2899 model is about $4000 when "configured" with the same specs--so I have to think this is an overcomeable issue. -
Well, looking at that thread, there seems to be a lot of confusion and no clear answer. I'm in the camp of those saying that those Precisions not supporting ECC RAM makes no sense at all. We'll see how this particular story shakes out.
-
Does anyone know when the zbook g3 17 notebook will be available for purchase?
-
You can buy them now through HP or resellers like CDW, but they're not shipping for another couple weeks AFAIK.
-
Does anyone know once they start producing the new ones will they stop prducing any zbook g2 models like the 17 g2?
-
Probably. Sometimes they might keep making the old ones if business customers still want a specific model for instance. But unless there's still demand, companies like HP generally just keep selling the old version until they're out of stock. In that case you can often get a pretty good deal on last-gen hardware, with the same great "new product" warranty

are we talking about the same thing? Where can I even order a zbook g3 17 inch notebook ?bigeye8 likes this.

Me too, where can i buy a ZBook 15 G3?

It's January now...the launch month for the G3 ZBooks...so you should be able to order these soon. Before the end of the month, but maybe even in the next two weeks.bigeye8 likes this.

As far as I know the only ZBook G3 model available right now is the Studio. The bigger ones are not available yet.
-
Would someone mind giving me a brief rundown of the differences between the ZBook 15, 15u, and Studio?
I keep seeing them referenced, but don't know what the distinctions are. Thanks. -
15u was existing lower-cost/lower-spec "ultrabook" while Studio is higher-performance (and price), and maybe a bit bigger than the u. The regular 15 is bigger still, heavier, with numpad, and capacity for more RAM, better video cards, etc.
HP's old comparison: http://h20195.www2.hp.com/V2/GetPDF.aspx/4AA5-4926ENW
Other model info is all on their site for you to compare.bigeye8 likes this. -
Thanks. I found this datasheet for the 15u G3:
http://www.hp.com/global/hpinfo/new...15/HPZBook15uG3MobileWorkstationDatasheet.pdf
Actually looks like what I'm looking for. I've been trying to find a good picture of the keyboard though. Does anyone know if the 15u will have a numberpad and a touchpad with non-integrated discrete buttons? The picture on the sheet shows a numberpad, but I'm not sure if this is an accurate picture or maybe a placeholder image. -
To answer my own question:
http://www8.hp.com/h20195/v2/GetPDF.aspx/c04832538.pdf
Looks like it has a numberpad (yay) and one of those stupid pointsticks (barf). But at least the touchpad buttons are discrete. -
Sorry... didn't notice you were talking about the 17. I was referring to the Studio G3 (the subject of this thread)
-
Was playing with customize unit on HP site and it seems that if Primary Storage is SATA then secondary storage also has to be SATA, cannot be PCIe which seems very strange that system would allow 2 SATA storage and not one SATA (primary) and one PCIe.
However, if PCIe is primary then secondary storage can be either SATA or PCIe.
Does this sound right? -
What is the difference between the ENERGY STAR Qualified configuration and the ones that aren't? I see it's a checkbox on the customization page for those models. Is it just a software setting adjustment for power management, or is there any hardware difference?
For those who have prior experience with DreamColor displays, is it worth waiting for on the Studio models? My main usage is going to be software/web development. I was already planning on the high DPI/resolution version. -
Dreamcolor displays are definitely worth it but since web development uses the sRGB colorspace I don't know if you need it.
-
Came across this Star Wars ZBook Studio video...pretty cool.
hurry up and ship darn it!
Charles P. Jefferies likes this. -
That's a great re-do of their previous video. They should upload these in 4K. And then ship us ZBook Studios with UHD DC displays and the video preloaded so we can watch it in full-blown DC awesomeness
For those who have ordered from HP: what delivery dates are showing up on the HP store website?
For those who have ordered from CDW: have any of your machines shipped yet? Are they shipping late (beyond the 7-11 day period originally quoted by CDW)? -
Does HP have a booth at CES this year?
One of us should probably stop by and shoot photos/video if they have ZBook Studios on hand
Especially if they have both DreamColor and UHD models, so we can get a good comparison of those two options.
-
I believe they do

Some more news on specs...
According to B&H, both the $2,499 Core i7-6700HQ machine (T6E17UT#ABA) and the $2,899 Xeon machine (T6E86UT#ABA) have Ultra HD displays. $2500 for a quad-core Core-i7 ZBook with 512GB Z-Turbo SSD and 4K Ultra HD is not bad, maybe a bit more than XPS 15 pricing.
