I just received my zbook 17 and I love it - it's so quiet and cool compared to my old laptop. It's also very snappy.

My Zbook 17 G2 screen will flicker periodically. My other ZBook 17 G2 that I returned (had wrong configuration) did the same thing. I have the latest BIOS and AMD video card drivers. I have the dreamcolor display.
 -

Well, I decided to return it and wait for the new ZBook G3, Dell Precision, or Lenovo P70.
 -

If your machine is a non-dreamcolor model, it will be fine with 980m.
With DC display, maybe you need a operation system based on UEFI mode, not sure.Charles P. Jefferies likes this. -

Since I returned my Zbook, I have a HP Advanced Docking Station (model A7E38AA#ABA) with 230 w power adapter for sale. I bought it new 33 days ago. It's like brand new. I'll include a free upgrade bay HHD/SSD caddy for it too.
$150 plus shipping. -

Ok, a few issues with my Zbook now:
1. The USB 3.0 resets in a few minutes, so if you plug in a HDD in it, it will unmount randomly. I can't seem to find a cure for that. USB works fine.
2. The fan sometimes switches on at very low temps and gets quite loud - I have installed Notebook Fan control but I don't have a Zbook 17 profile and it seems it doesn't do anything anyway.Last edited: Sep 23, 2015 -

Mine wouldn't even recognize my GoFlex portable drive. It just keep mounting and un-mounting.Last edited: Sep 24, 2015 -

I'm pretty sure it's an intel/microsoft thing as I read many people have an issue like that.

Hi!
Does anyone know whether the K610M card on the Zbook 17 G1 is an MXM3.0a card (and, hence, whether it can be replaced with another 3.0a card)? I assume it also has a MXM3.0a heatsink - or? -

I got a Zbook G2 17 few days ago. And i would like use SIM on it.
I put a sim on the slot but when power it on, nothing happened. Or is there any configuration to be done.
Thanks. -

Do you have the WWAN card installed, which you will need for the sim to work?
With Win 7 you need the HP connection manager and Win 10 should work out of the box -

I have a new Zbook 17 G2 coming (K4K67UT) tomorrow - just purchased it on ebay!
Is there a "preferred" location for a second drive? It comes with a 1 TB 7200 RPM HDD but I'd like to put in at least a 256 GB SSD for the OS and large files. Presumably I'll have to do the OS/swap scenario someone posted a few pages back, but am wondering about the best location for the OS SSD to grind out as much speed as possible.
It comes with Win 7; would like to install Win 10 and a flavour of Linux (Ubuntu?) as well in a multi-boot scenario. Just wondering if anyone has done so and whether I'm likely to encounter any problems (mostly with Win 10/drivers etc.)?
I'm not using it for heavy graphics - just heavy accounting and finance work and a lot of number-crunching, so graphics issues are not a huge problem unless I can't add monitors etc. -

Small question: does the zBook work without a GPU installed (by using the integrated Intel GPU)?
 -

 Yes
      -

Does your ZBook make and annoying high oitched buzzing sound coming from the screen? You might not hear it when playing video but when you are working in quiet on mine you can definitely hear it.
 -

So I can buy a used Zbook with a K5100M, take out the K5100M to resell it and the laptop will still work fine?
 -

You could but what is the point of a ZBook without a GPU?
There is also little price difference between selling them seperate or together -
Nope. Quiet as a lamb at night.
But I have a definite problem with my unifying USB adapter (Logitech) for my Mouse (M310) and Keyboard (MK520) - it randomly makes keys "sticky" -- and generally not ones I've pressed recently. I also get random yellow marks all over the screen. Rather upsetting and annoying!! I'm not sure if adding a different external mouse/kb will work --- I often use multi-monitors so it's easier with both of those in place as well. -

I need some assistance cloning/installing an SSD (I found a Sandisk A110 m.2 2260) as what I am doing simply is not working! I followed the instructions here per landsome:
No need for me to make a backup - it's a more-or-less unused machine to date, so I just cloned C/D/E (Windows, HPTools, Recovery) to the SSD. After rebooting and resetting the active partition with Macrium, setting the Boot to UEFI Hybrid and removing the HDD, Windows does boot - sort of:
- I get only my base user login (no fingerprint reader - suspect that is easy to add afterwards)
 - upon logging in I receive "Preparing your desktop" - and then a blank screen after a minute or two
 - Tells me that I'm running Win 7, build 7601 (true) and that my copy of Windows is not genuine (untrue)

Have I gotten something wrong in the BIOS? Could the clone be screwed up (or just me....)?
I'm a bit frustrated - not my specialty!! -

Hi!
Currently I'm working on project to turn k3100m/k4100M into k5100m/GTX 880m without hardware mod and I'll be very appreciative if you help with some stuff
I'm looking for people with gtx 780/880 or
quadro K3/4/5100M. All you need to do:

1. Download GPU-Z and save the vBIOS.
2. Download RWEverything, in top corner select "Access-->PCI". Then windows should appear - select device called "nVidia Corporation VGA Controller". After, save the info to binary with Shift+F2 combination.
3. Share this two files with me

Best Regards,
Valentine. -

One potential problem is that if you cloned Win installed on legacy bios and then switched to UEFI bios the thing will not boot. So revert to the bios config (legacy or UEFI) of the original Win installation.
However, the most likely problem is that the cloning messed up your drive letters. Happens when you clone on a drive that Win already knows under a different letter (e.g., E or F, rather than C). Details and workaround are to be found here: http://www.sevenforums.com/installa...-letter-outside-os-post911397.html#post911397 -

I just bought Zbook 17 G2 with 8GB RAM (1 DIMM) and 256GB SSD, and now I want to upgrade it with another 8GB RAM and 1TB HDD 7200rpm.
So, my question for owners of ZBook laptops with original 1TB HDD 7200rpm, if you can tell me the manufacturer name and model number of the original HDD they put in ZBook.
And also, what's the manufacturer name and model number of the original RAM they put in ZBook. -

Any laptop 2.5 inch hard drive 7mm or 9.5mm should work. As for the memory you can use this Newegg configurator to get the correct memory http://www.newegg.com/MemoryFinder/#BGZD2HcAL000ABD
 -

Any notebook HDD will work, as will any memory that meets the DDR3L (DDR3 Low Voltage) standard, i.e., is rated at 1.35V, usually labeled PC3L.
 -

@Mrki - There's only one 1TB 7200rpm mobile drive and that's Hitachi's 7K1000 (P/N HTS721010A9E630, not an HP P/N, but retail). Good luck!

Hi!
Can someone please summarize for me what the available IPS FHD options (other than Dreamcolor) are on the G1 and G2? I mean the display names or IDs.
Thanks in advance. -

As far as I know there are none. I guess you'll be able to fit the ones from G3, when available of course.
 -

Thanks. Too bad. Was thinking of moving up from my Z15 - but I don't think I could live with TN any more...
 -

For you folks with the backlit keyboard, how would you characterize the backlighting? For ex, I read a review where it was reported when the keyboard was angled slightly (on your lap or on a pull out desk shelf) light would bleed past the keys so bright it was "blinding".
 -

I have the 15" version, but the keyboard is exactly the same. No light problem in my case. And, anyway, neither better, nor worse than the lighting on the Dell Precision or Latitude lines, and other notebooks I've used (such as Toshiba Portege).

Hi, I recently purchased a zbook 17 g2 and was considering a gtx 980m. I tried to click on the media link you posted, but it failed. I'm trying to determine if the stock vbios (clevo or other) will work. Do you have a zbook with this card and what oem vbios does it have. Thanks much!

I just got a ZBook 17 G2. I noticed the Windows logon sound effect always has a bit of static in it. Some of the other Windows sound effects seem OK. Wonder if there's a problem with the speaker.
 -

I think it's a problem with the soud resonating with the case. If you press the case between the speaker grill just left of the wireless button the static sound should stop. I'm not sure what kind of internal rubber pad or something to put inside to stop it.

I got a new:
HP ZBook 17 G2, Core i7-4810MQ, 16GB RAM, 750GB HDD, 256GB SSD, Quadro K4100M (J8Z41EA#ABD)
I upgraded the Bios to version 1.14 and wonder why this Z-Book dont have a "Deep Sleep" Option in the Bios? My Z-Book G1 15 have this option..
I enabled UEFI Native & secure boot
and enabled VT-d and VT-x (or something like that)
Did you have any other tips for me?
Thanks! -

Antoher question:
Does the ZBook 17 G2 support 2x16GB RAM ?
Edit:
Does the ZBook 17 G2 support 16GB Kit (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1866 SODIMM RAM?
Crucial says its compatible:
http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/hp-zbook-17-g2-(quad-core)/CT7799119
Or will this run only with DDR3-1600 Mhz ?
Want to know if this memory will works too?

The highest freq supported by the chipset in Zbook G2 is 1866Mhz. You can get 1866Mhz only when using up to 16Gb - in other cases, only 1600Mhz.Mappi75 likes this.

Oh, thank you for your information!
So i dont have to check this...
When i want to use 32GB Ram the fastet is: DDR3L 1600Mhz @CL9 - right?
(I got a Corsair Kit in 32GB RAM 1600@CL9 in my ZBook 15 - that works perfect!) -

 Right
      -

Thanks!
BTW: i got a info (fom HP Forum) that 2x16GB DDR3L 1600 should NOT work with the ZBook 17G2..
So i will take the 32GB RAM from my ZBook 15 und put it into my ZBook 17 G2 (and replace it with the 16GB RAM). -

On old BIOSes there might be some problem. But it will work. Even on my old EliteBook 8760W I have DDR3L 1866Mhz modules. Precision M4800/M6800 on the same chipset have no problem at all with the RAM. Zbook 15 and 17 have the same chipset and pretty the same BIOS.

I am looking for a notebook with two 2.5" hard drive bays and the chat agent on HP.com pointed me to a Zbook G2 17. I am aware that there is a G3 version out now, and am wondering if the G2 is being discontinued in the near future to be replaced by the G3? Does anyone know what the future is for the G2? Thanks.
 -

I added the 32GB DDR3L 1600@CL9 Corsair memory in the Zbook 17 G2 - it seems to be working perfect.
One question:
its ok that Aida64 shows over 3W for memory power consumption?
Its real 1,35V memory.. -

 For 4 DIMMS it's ok.

The G2 and G3 both support two 2.5 inch hard drive bays. Technically the G2 can support a third 2.5 inch hard drive in the DVD bay with a caddy as well. The G2 will be discontinued in June. I would probably just say get the G3. It has a better cooling system, LCD, can take much more ram, and is thinner while getting better battery life..Ag76 likes this. -

I was under the impression that the G3 only had one 2.5" drive bay for some reason. I downloaded the service manual after reading your reply, and see the location of the two bays. Thanks for the help!

No problem. If you do end up ordering a customized Zbook 17 G3 from HP directly, don't forget to add the coupon SDSMB15 which adds an additional 15% off right now. It's supposed to last through April 30th. I think you can tell the custom configurator to just include the HDD cages if you have your own drives that you intend to fit.Ag76 likes this. -

In the configurator for the G3 model with the i7-6700 processor, there is no option for an 2.5" SSD in the primary drive bay. I visited with a chat agent to see if HP could build that model with a 2.5" SSD, and was told that was not an option.
If I configure a G3 with a 2.5" 1TB 7200 rpm HD in the primary drive bay, I'd like to move that drive to the secondary bay and reformat it for storage. Then could I install my own 2.5" SSD in the primary bay and reinstall Windows to that drive from the OS recovery DVD that I'd purchase with the notebook?
Thank you for the coupon code....15% off would be a great help. -

HP is only offering M.2 SSD's with the new G3 series from what I can tell.
I looked into the configuration of the 17 G3 and it looks like it doesn't offer a HDD Bracket kit to be shipped with the machine even if you don't order a drive (if you look at the 17 G2 configurator you can see this option available...)
So, you would need HP Spare Part #848351-001, which is the HDD Bracket, screws, and cable, in order to use the second drive slot. The Part costs $29 currently on HP Partsurfer, but shipping is additional and I am not certain what availability would be like. You may be able to get a rep to add the part to your order manually if you explain what you want to do.Ag76 likes this. -

Win32asmguy, thanks again for the help.

On my ZBook 17 G2 there was a second HDD Bracket included.
