Make sure the wireless button is pressed on (should be blue) on the right side of your keyboard.

Check the device manager to see if anything shows up as well.
    Welcome. :)

The fan speed generally stays at the same constant speed for me while surfing the Internet. I don't do much more intensive than that. Perhaps try updating the BIOS before you send it back?

Hi Charles, I tried that first and it did say in the release notes that it fixes a problem where changes in the BIOS are not set when exiting but still no joy, I think i might be expecting too much but I will give them a call and let you know how it goes.

    Cheers for the quick reply.

Twizt, did you format yours? Quicklook runs off its own partition; if you deleted that then no Quicklook . . .

Windows 7 boots in 20-30 seconds for me so I saw no point to having it.

no i did not format anything, and i know that quicklook is on the separate partition.

i know theres no point [per say] but it just bugs me that theres a feature that isint working for me. :(

Has anyone here used their laptop with a Display Port:VGA adapter yet?

I'm using one right now, but the only resolution that works is 1400x900. The rest give me a black screen. :(

I have just turned this on with Outlook 2007 and a standard personal folder, first I had to make sure the addin was enable I then clicked on the preferences for the addin and select each folder I wanted, I then went and look in the extra folder on the extra partition to see if there was any modified data. I found that the data for the app is stored here XML here and you can tell when it last updated by the date on the files. E:\Hewlett-Packard\QuickLook\HPQL_Data\%outlook profile name&\*.xml files. I have only set this up with a local personal folder.
Do you have any of these files and is the addin in outlook?

quick one, does anyone's power button stay illuminated after shutting down?

When I try to power up again, it won't let me. I have to hold the power button down for 5 seconds. ..

If the power button is still illuminated then the notebook hasn't shut down . . . that is odd. Does that happen all the time?

Thanks for providing the numbers. I am getting over five hours of life with:
    -Screen brightness at minimum
    -WiFi/Bluetooth on
-Using OneNote and Firefox (no flash content)

I think you could squeeze another half hour at least out of your notebook if you cut the screen brightness.

How is the Celeron's performance - fairly responsive?

as for performance, i would notice sometimes when i type there is a delay, such as typing out a few words, it would not show up till a couple seconds later. kind of annoying, but the programs themselves have no problem

I'm not too savvy with everything right here, I just know my computer is running pretty hot. My xps15, which is known to have some heat issues with the video card, never got this hot.

I've been playing Defense Grid (WHICH IS $2.50 ON STEAM TODAY!!!!!). The CPU meter never even jumped passed 20% so I'm a bit confused.

    Any explanation is appreciated.

The CPU temperature is very high, close to exceeding Intel's max rated for that CPU (105*C).

Is your fan running at higher speeds or no? My CPU only reached that temperature one time, and that was when the fan didn't ramp up to a higher speed. I do not know why the fan speed did not ramp up . . . but like I said that only happened once. My fan has been responding to changes in CPU temperature normally ever since. Like I have been advising other members in this thread, perhaps try a BIOS update.

I've only updated the BIOS of my Aspire One, and that was by recommendation of an AAO user site. I was wondering how do I see the current version of my BIOS and where do I check for updated BIOS's (basically, how do I know when to update)? Thanks!

Edit: OK, I tend to post too early. I found the F.07 update that says the date is Nov. 17, 2009. Since I received my machine before that date, I assume I don't have it. Also, a quick Google search revealed that a simple terminal command can identify the BIOS version (in Ubuntu), and thus I discovered that I was running F.04. Time to update!

P.S. Does this forum support strike-out for text? And if so, how do I do it?

<s>This forum does support strike-out text</s> ;); quote my post to see the code.

I wouldn't recommend a BIOS update unless you are having problems.

Ah, I see. I was using square brackets instead of angle ones. I wasn't having any major problems, but I updated the BIOS anyways. The one problem I was having was that one of my sensors was reading 90 degrees C when I came back from sleep in Ubuntu, causing the fan to spin ALL the way up and not stop. However, this problem was remedied when I put it back to sleep and woke it up again, or plugged in power (or removed and re-plugged in power). It doesn't happen consistently, and I'm not sure exactly what causes it, but hopefully the BIOS will fix it.

Just to note, this doesn't occur when I sleep in Win7.

My notebook is running the F.07 BIOS, which is interesting considering I never updated it. I am not sure what the difference is between it and the previous versions however.

The reason I say only update it if you have problems is updating the BIOS is risky business . . . if it fails/something interrupts it, that's the end of your notebook. A few years ago I bricked my HP Pavilion zv5000z because a BIOS update failed halfway through. Fortunately HP was nice and fixed it for me. I've been scared to update the BIOS of any computer ever since. :p

I was concerned that the fan didn't seem to speed up that much when it got up there. It hasn't happened since, and hopefully no more.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression that if the BIOS update failed, you could still go back and create a bootable DOS USB stick and re-flash the BIOS that way. When I updated the BIOS with a USB stick on the AspireOne, it didn't appear to need anything on the laptop itself, as it ran DOS from the stick and flashed the files via DOS command line. Does doing it this way still fail when the BIOS is corrupt?

What I meant was is that there is no combo headphone / microphone on the market with a plug that fits the jack for such on the right side of the 5310m. This requires a 3.5mm TRRS plug. There is no standard way for wiring the plug so that, although there are a very few other devices that have a jack for this type of plug (like iPhone), there is no guarantee that it will work with the 5310m. My researches so far indicate that there is really nothing around to work ... not even a converter. So far, HP has left me with an orphan jack. If someone finds something that works, please post.

Nice to know the SIIG DisplayPort to HDMI converter works with audio and well as video. In looking at the standards it supports, I would suspect that some earlier converters on the market lack support for the latest version of DisplayPort and so don't work properly with the 5310m. Thanks to HP for telling me there was no audio!

In my case the notebook would not even get to POST, the fans turned on and that was it. When a BIOS update fails it usually means that you need to use special equipment to get the computer working again.
I guess you look at that device I linked? http://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20091201005916/en
If that doesn't work then your best choice is a USB sound adapter. You should be able to get a very simple one for around $10-15 on eBay.

Has anyone tried playing iTunes 1080p movies thru a TV yet?

I can't seem to figure out why my images are coming out choppy. Checking task manager, it never jumps past 30%.

Mine works great with my TV.

My monitor on the other hand requires that I power off/power on after turning the computer on or plugging in the hdmi cable. Acer h223h. :(

I get sound out of both.

Does anyone know of any good messenger bags [with a laptop compartment] or new sleeve cases that'll fit the 5310m snuggly?

Seems like the standard 13" cases don't quite fit the length of the 5310m, at least not according to like the computer/website measurements. But then if you go into the 14" cases, the dimensions make it seem like they'd be too wide for the 5310m [thus possibly leading to some "shifting" in transit]. Anyone have any insight on this?

Also, does anyone know if cases for the 13" Apple MacBook fit the 5310m? Seems like they're almost the same size, except the Mac's like .1in shorter, so I'm not sure if that makes a big difference in terms of fit.

Looks like i'm returning the probook.

I really REALLY love this HP, but the spacebar (small issue I know) and the overheating CPU are really making me regret the purchase.

I did upgrade from f.04 to f.07 and it didn't make much difference in the temps, so I give up.

    ul80vt here I come!

I caution you against getting the UL80Vt, especially after using the 5310m. I would go for the UL30Vt instead.

Sorry to hear you didn't have a good experience with the 5310m.

I've got to use both. The only difference to me was the keyboard. Outside of that, it should be more than fine. What complaints did you have with the 80 vs 30?

I will miss the Probook. I think it's the best looking notebook out there.

And to be honest, a majority of the purchase decision for the probook was its aesthetics. At least i'll still have some metal on the lid. :)

The UL30Vt has better build quality than the UL80Vt . . . it is more solid and does not have as much flex. I also found the keyboard to be more solid.
Both the UL30Vt and the UL80Vt are very nice-looking notebooks though.

And I agree, the looks were a significant part of the purchase decision for me as well. The 5310m is very slick. Dell doesn't make anything that looks half as good.

We'll see how the Dell Vostro V13 looks in real life, I'm excited.

Btw, how does the screen calibration work like you did on the 5310m? Does it install a program on the laptop that runs each time to get the colors right, or how?

Insane deal, mtorgow - almost makes me wish I waited. Congrats on the purchase and welcome to the club/forums. :)

Note that the FM997UT model, which I believe most of us here bought, comes with Windows XP preinstalled. If you want to install Windows 7, I used this guide:
    http://kmwoley.com/blog/?p=345
It is very simple; you just need an 8GB+ flash drive and another computer with a disc drive to get the files off the Windows disc that comes with the 5310m.
The calibration worked very well - it noticeably improves the color temperature. By default the 5310m's display has a cold aka blue hue. This post I made basically sums up my thoughts on the display:
After about two months of using the 5310m I would say I am satisfied with the display. The matte coating is greatly appreciated as there are no reflections. Even at minimum brightness it is usable outdoors in a shady area. I still think the viewing angles are rather poor but they are a non-issue for me since I'm the only one using the laptop . . .

Yes fixed, suppose I am not just a complaining git. Spoke to HP yesterday who advised upgrading the BIOS and changing the setting for Fan Always On in the BIOS both which I had already done and as soon as they found that out they said they will send me a Dead On Arrival certificate to send to the supplier to get a new one sent back. Once sent the supplier sent me out a new one which is silent in comparison to the old one.

Cheers for the help with this

So I just got the ul80vt in, and I can say that the Probook is built like a brick.

Yes ... I don't know what to say about this. SIIG will not verify that their DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter, DisplayPort to HDMI adapter cable, Part #: CB-DP0062-S1, will provide audio with the DisplayPort jack on the HP ProBook 5310m. HP tech support tells me that their implementation of DisplayPort on the HP ProBook 5310m does NOT provide audio.

Can you please elaborate and post your set up and how you got audio through to the HDMI port of your HDTV? Thanks.

That's funny because I got audio through mine.

I've used it on 3 different sets now with no issues, except for my dedicated monitor which I've had to power on/off to get the signal (Acer h223h).

I literally plugged it in and Windows shut off the onboard sound and ran everything to the tv. They were on a 23" LG from '06 and a fairly new 50" Samsung.
