Well, I could be wrong. All I know for sure is that the M.2 drives that HP ships with them are PCIe, so I can confirm those work. Whether or not a M.2 Sata drive would work, I cannot say for sure.

    Thanks for your reply :)

    I don't know. Maybe:
    14 G2 / 15u G2 / 17G2: "one internal M.2 PCIe/SATA slot [...] auto-configured to be a PCIe or SATA slot depending on the type of card installed"

15 G2: "one internal M.2 PCIe slot [...] auto-configured to be a PCIe slot depending on the type of card installed"

For a multiple displays setup, is it possible to let the FirePro dGPU deal with 1 display and let the Intel iGPU deal with 2 other displays?
So, on desktop 1, you get max. performance. On desktop 2 and desktop 3 you can do other things, without performance loss.

Is this possible with the UltraSlim Docking Station?

Off topic: in the video, you may notice a minor mistake: 2 DP cables and 1 VGA cable being plugged in, but only 2 external displays around... :)

    Hi Folks,

Can anyone help me find out what the maximum speed memory my ZBook 14 G2 will take? I want to upgrade from 8GB to 16GB.
The HP service manual makes it sound like only DDR3L PC3L-12800 (1600 MHz) is compatable, I was hoping to install either 1866MHz or 2133MHz memory.
Normally my 'go to' location for memory compatibility would be the uk.crucial.com system scanner, which tells me that either 1600MHz or 1866MHz is compatible.

    Cheers in advance :)

    Did anyone try to put an m.2 ssd > 256 into a 14 g2?

If yes, what parts did you use?

I'd like to get one but i need it be configured with 512 ssd(OS, VMS, and whatever) + 1tb hdd (general storage)

    Thanks!

    Hi Mr Darda,

I have a "Sandisk SSD A110 M.2 2260 256GB HP P/N: 759492-001" that I sourced from eBay for about £100, I think I was quite lucky with this as I found one in the UK, currently it looks like most are in the US which I wasn't comfortable with before.

From the research that I had done, the only card that'll work is a PCIe 2260 M.2 Card. This is only available in two flavours: 256GB and 512GB, searching the HP Part Number on eBay is how I found mine.

When I booted it up on my ZBook 14 G2 it noted in the properties that it was from a 15 G2, this didn't bother me as I reinstalled Windows 10 from scratch anyway. Works perfectly.

My plan currently is to get a Samsung 850 PRO 1 TB SSD to use as general storage, just waiting for it to drop below the £300 mark at the moment.

I managed to pick up a Lite-on 256gb for £37, There are a few A110's in Poland for £70 which is a good deal as well.

If you use the M.2 SSD I wouldnt worry too much about which type of SSD you put in the Drive Bay as you wont notice the difference in speed that much.
The Sandisk Ultra II 1TB's are around £150 now and others will be releasing 2TB drives pretty soon so prices will come done.
I am waiting for the better 1TB drives to hit £150

BTW there are 2TB drives for auction right now ;)

Is the LiteOn a PCIe or a SATA based M.2 Card? It's so confusing about whether SATA M.2 cards actually work or not ... I have seen them work in the EliteBook 840 G2 which is almost the same as the ZBook 14 G2 (someone at work has a Crucial SATA M.2 card in their EliteBook, nowhere near the speed of PCIe M.2)

It should be the HP one so M.2

I will test it in my Zbook14 G2 and 820 G2 once it arrives.

That should work fine. Since HP is offering the ZBook 14G2 with a Turbo Drive, which is a PCIe SSD. But watch the physical size: M.2 2260.

Does anyone know if you install the M.2 drive, does the Bios force you to boot from that drive or can you still boot from the 2.5" drive and use the M.2 as an additional drive? The documentation kinda suggests it auto boots to M.2 without the ability to change it in the bios settings.

I haven't purchased a M.2 drive but have a new Zbook 14 G2 coming on Monday to replace my older version 1 model.

Press Del to go into the BIOS setup. In there it lists several boot options: the PCI-e m.2 SSD, msata (my 2.5" laptop drive plugged in) and two wired networks choices (IPV4 and IPV6 flavors). However i only boot to the m.2 and have not booted to the msata/2.5" before (my data drive is not bootable anyways).

    i5 Zbook 14 vs i7 Zbook 14 G2

I loved my Zbook 14 with an i5 processor so much that I just purchased the newer G2 model with an i7 because I decided to try the faster processor for some of my work and it was heavily discounted. I got the one with the zDrive 256 ssd. The G2 is a different beast and so is the i7 processor. Below are the differences I noticed over the last 2 weeks of use:

    1. The G2 model does not have the rubber lip surrounding the screen bezel, so when closed it's not as soft and makes a louder thump sound closing the lid. I'm assume this is a cost cutting design change.
    2. The i7 processor is about 10% quicker when loading the processor completely. But when the processor isn't loaded completely I don't see any time difference in doing tasks.
    3. The fan speed is triggered on sooner, and louder as it's lowest setting is higher. It blows cold air so I'm certain it's turning on too high too soon. With no adjustment possible I'm guessing this is due to the i7 processor versus the i5 rather than a G2 versus G1 model difference. On my i5 G1 model it turns on much quieter and doesn't speed up to be noisy until it's needed. The i7 G2 seems to come on prematurely.
    4. The battery life on the i7 is less, even though it's a newer Intel family of 14nm versus 22nm. I was hoping the thinner wafer with help in that regard but doesn't seem to make much difference.
    5. The USB ports are really stiff and hard to extract out some USB plugs. The left side is worse than the right side. I assume this will get better over time but it's actually too tight and I have to hold the laptop back with one hand and pull with the other. Not enjoyable.
    6. The ethernet RJ45 jack is also about twice as tight. too tight.
    7. The palm rest top plastic piece surrounding the keyboard is now dark black versus a dark gray, to me it looks cheaper and less elegant.
    8. The mouse pad and buttons have little bugs in them, the buttons don't always click when pressed and sometimes I have to restart my computer to fix a bug when the buttons don't work until you move the mouse. Since this model of laptop is now extinct I can only dream of driver fixes. They don't happen all the time so recreating is difficult.
    9. The buttons for power, wireless and speaker have the backlit symbols made with thicker lines now, too thick in my opinion.
    10. The G2 doesn't use SATA for the M.2 drive only PCIe. But what's worse is the size 2260 or 60mm which is extremely rare compared to the common 2280 or 80mm. This limits your options. At least the main drive bay is a normal sized SATA.
    11. The bios setting screen on the G2 has way more line spacing so you spend more time scrolling than the G1 and less options.
Everything else seems the same. In hindsight I prefer the i5 processor mainly because of the fan and battery life. Now stuck with 2 laptops so likely selling the G2 and just buying a new battery for the G1. After 3 years of use my battery capacity is about 1/2 but that's still over 3 hours of life.

That's not true. I can positively confirm that the HP ZBook 14G2 will accept M.2 2260 SATA SSDs.

I recently bought a Zbook 14 G2 and I'm very happy with it, it came with 8GB of ram that I've upgraded to 16GB and it currently has an Intel 240GB 2500 SSD. I'm thinking about upgrading to an M.2 drive but as I'm sure many people here know they only take 60mm drives.

Seeing as how it's only got 2xpci-e 2.0 lanes how fast are they really compared to a SATA SSD? Is it worth the pain and hassle of finding a compatible 60mm M.2 SSD?

I've just got my hands on one of these ZBook 14 G2s and I like it, but I've tried to put in a 2260 drive along side my 2.5" SSD and to my disapointment it's slower than the SSD.

Is this because I didn't get a good drive or because the port is slower?

Would be good to know before I hunt for a quicker m.2 to put in.

These are the drives I got:

    M.2:

    SSD:

I was considering getting this one instead:

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product...1e2-a66912b500ea&pf_rd_r=6SSNNV69YS01QGGWH4GH

I was also wondering if I could get a drive that would go int the WWAN port?

    Thanks,

    DJ

Well this laptop caught fire last night.

Looks like the "Fire"Pro GPU has burnt out.

Anyone know if they can be replaced?

    Thanks,

    DJ
