Does anyone know if the $500 discount is stackable with the student discount that hp provides?

No, the coupon cannot be combined with either student or employee discounts. In any case, its still a good deal compared to the 6% off with APP or EPP. You could probably get cashback from fatwallet(3%) if you really need to get the price down.

Ah, thanks for the info. No kidding, it's a great deal! The only thing that's keeping me from snapping it up right away is that the HDX is too bulky to put in my backpack (I honestly don't care about the weight; my backpack in high school weighed 25 to 30 lbs whenever I weighed it but it's just too darned big!) and none of the other models offer the 8800 GTS :(.

Does the 3% get taken before or after the $500 discount? Also, do the following still apply with the discount?

Save up to $574 instantly (on customizable models). Offer includes:
    - $200 instant rebate
    - FREE upgrade to 320GB hard drive ($75 value)
    - FREE premium software bundle ($250 value)
    - FREE shipping ($49 value)

It's the base offer on the hp website.

One last question. If I were to buy it now to make sure that I could get in before they hit the 2000 person limit and then decide that it's too bulky for me, could I return it for a full refund?

Argh. I feel slightly cheated. I tried to apply the coupon and realized two things. The hp price doesn't include the roughly $150 increase in taxes and the $500 off is counted against the "instant savings" on the site. So by the time all that was added I was only saving $150, far less that what I was counting on, leaving the notebook far outside my budget :(

In reality HP's $500 discount is actually around $250 to $300. They don't include the existing discount, they don't include any perifferals, you usually add stuff you wouldn't originally get just to get over the $1399. After everything is added and subtracted, the laptops aren't a bad deal, but don't for a minute think your getting a $500 discount from the laptop you would normally order. And their $70 rebate on the "free" printer. It's been three months and I'm still waiting for the check. Called the rebate department and they said I will receive it July 4th or so... THREE MONTHS!

Ain't that a killer? I hate rebates. But HP knows most people don't bother filling rebates out. That's why they make it "please allow 8 to 10 weeks for processing." In the meantime, they earn interest off the money or use it as working capital.

The only existing discount they don't include is student discount, company discounts, or employee discounts, but that's to be expected.

Thats pretty much how any of these coupons work, even Dell, Lenovo do the same with their respective coupons. Plus, not all mail rebates are bad. I have sent in rebates which didnt turn up until 7 - 8 months after I sent it in. But on the other hand I have received rebates within 3 weeks after the rebate was mailed. So, there is a wide difference in terms of when you are going to get the MIR back. So, dont be so surprised if they take 4 months to get your rebate back.
