The Notebook Review forums were hosted by TechTarget, who shut down them down on January 31, 2022. This static read-only archive was pulled by NBR forum users between January 20 and January 31, 2022, in an effort to make sure that the valuable technical information that had been posted on the forums is preserved. For current discussions, many NBR forum users moved over to NotebookTalk.net after the shutdown.

Please note that due to the number of driver threads that need to be managed as well as the lack of support HP now provides for these notebooks, updating this thread is going to be less of a priority. However, updates for this particular thread will still occur if something very important is released.

Based on dannyres's thread and my other driver threads, I've decided to post the latest drivers that are compatible with the following notebooks using an Intel processor below. It is part of my ongoing, informal commitment to help assist those who had performed clean installs on their HP notebooks. Please let me know if you find newer drivers or other devices so I can update this post!

Compatible notebook products ("x" denotes a numeric digit):

    • HP Pavilion Entertainment Notebooks
      • dv3-20xx, dv3-21xx, dv3-22xx series
      • dv3-23xx series

    • Compaq Presario Notebooks
      • CQ35-xxx series
      • CQ36-xxx series

NOTE: All of these drivers come from HP's website, Microsoft Update, and from other reputable websites (including other manufacturers). All of the drivers here are WHQL Certified or digitally signed drivers, available as of the date when this post was updated. These drivers should be compatible with the notebook series stated above, but I am not responsible for technical difficulties that can occur as a result of improper driver installation!

Following along the same lines as the other driver threads, the process of installing and updating drivers is for ADVANCED/EXPERIENCED users only. Average users can use the drivers located at the HP support portals -- they're the safest and simplest way to go in terms of drivers for your specific model. Some of these drivers may work with notebooks other than the stated brand and models, but this is NOT guaranteed. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK -- only install these drivers if you know how to revert the changes that you have made should any problems be encountered.

    Intel Chipset Device Software

    Important Information

    • To ensure that all device drivers are updated, simply execute the downloaded setup file using the -overall parameter.

      • Example: If you saved the downloaded file as infinst911autol.exe to the root directory of C: drive, you can launch the Run command (Windows key + R) and insert "C:\infinst911autol.exe -overall" in the Open field (without the quotes). Press OK to begin the interactive installation process.

    • Starting with Intel Chipset Device Software package version 9.2.0.1016, the Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver may become overwritten with the driver that exists in the package if it is installed. Should such an instance occur, reinstall the Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver afterwards.

Intel Rapid Storage Technology (SATA AHCI)

    Important Information

    • Intel Rapid Storage Technology is the new name that replaces the Intel Matrix Storage Manager.
    • It is highly recommended that you install this even if RAID is not configured on your system. See Intel® Rapid Storage Technology (Intel® RST) - Product overview for more information.
    • If you are having problems with the Interactive Setup wizard, use the INF Install method instead. This allows the driver to be installed using the Device Manager - Update Driver wizard. Once the driver is installed, you can try the Interactive Setup wizard again to ensure that the software is correctly installed.

Hey thanks.... are these drivers listed in the order you should install them?

Also what's the difference between the Intel WIFI LINK 5100, Broadcom Wireless LAN, and Atheros AR5009 Wireless LAN? and how do you know which one you have?thanks

The drivers are not listed in any particular order at this point. I personally think the BIOS should be the most important if it's not updated. Then, you should go ahead and update the actual drivers.

HP notebooks come with different wireless adapters depending on whether you opted for a model with 802.11n, 802.11g, etc. You can check what type of wireless device you have by using the Device Manager located in the Control Panel. It should be categorized under Network Adapters. ONLY install the one that is in your notebook -- don't install the others.

I was refering to if you did a clean install of vista (retail)... so you could do away with all that bloatware (i know you can just uninstall them... but still).

As for the wireless thing, thanks, found out I had broadcom.

If you did a clean install, all of the bloatware will be removed. All of that bloatware is NOT included in the original post (unless you consider HP MediaSmart and HP QuickTouch as bloatware, which some people do -- but I see them useful to some extent :)).

For a fresh install, you would need a retail Windows Vista disc or an image that was burned to disc. You might be able to use the existing key which came with your laptop, however you can use the ABR tool by orev if you want to backup and restore your existing license -- see the clean install thread for details.

After testing some of these drivers on Windows 7 RTM, I added Windows 7 compatibility designations to the following:

    • Intel WiFi Link 5100
    • Synaptics TouchPad
    • HP Integrated Bluetooth Module
    • HP Quick Launch Buttons

Please let me know if any of the other drivers listed on the original post are compatible with Windows 7 (if they aren't already designated). Thanks!

MediaSmart is not the same as Windows Media Center, it is sort of more like HP's multimedia extension developed by Cyberlink -- it used to formerly be HP QuickPlay/DVD Play.

SmartMenu is posted online on HP's website (and is now on the original post). Try the one that HP has provided online: ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp42001-42500/sp42238.exe

Original post has been updated; see changes below. Please note that the Realtek Ethernet/LAN driver link for Windows 7 may not be working due to a server issue regarding the download path. If this error occurs, try again a little later.

    08/13/2009
    • Updated Realtek Ethernet/LAN driver to version 7.005 for Windows 7.
    • Added IDT High Definition Audio Codec version 5.10.6209.0 for Windows XP.
    • Added Windows 7 designation to the IDT High Definition Audio Codec.

An NVIDIA graphics driver update for Windows Vista and Windows 7 is now available on the original post. This driver originates from the Microsoft Update Catalog.

    08/21/2009
    • Updated NVIDIA GeForce graphics driver to version 186.42 for Windows Vista and Windows 7.

It is strongly recommended that you first uninstall all previous drivers prior to installing this new one.

i tried the HP SmartMenu from their site and i still can't get it to load. at least now i don't get an error message. just nothing happens.

how come you don't include bluray drivers? my burner burned coasters 70% of the time when i uninstalled MediaSmart and Cyberlink DVD Suite. When i reinstalled all of them it now burns better...but still not perfect.

    also the BIOS is down

I am not aware of any Blu-Ray drivers that have been released. There shouldn't be specific drivers anyway, since it's up to the program that you use to burn or play to provide the Blu-Ray support.

I also noticed that the BIOS is down, but their download page is still up. I am going to keep it on the original post and hope that HP fixes the problem. It is getting annoying that HP keeps taking off new BIOS releases without really no explanation.

inexplicably after a restart the SmartMenu works. i don't use it but i was obsessed to get it to work. The new display drivers are fantastic on my LCD TV.

Only one big problem i don't know if anyone would have this problem but my HDMI audio isn't working anymore. I tried to rollback drivers for IDT and nVidia HDMI but it didn't help. Display driver problem?

thanks for all the work you're putting in and quick replies.

The display driver would not cause a problem with the HDMI audio. You might want to make sure that Windows is switching from laptop speaker mode to HDMI audio mode when you output to HDMI. You can do this by changing the default playback output in the Sound control panel.

i did some more research and it seems like there may be a parallel here but there were people who recently had problems with the desktop drivers not outputting to hdmi. however, it was fixed with the newest release of forceware.

i guess i'll use headphone out until the next release of nvidia drivers.

yea i did use manual switching. i even did the speaker test with the hdmi device and nothing happened.

Update now on the original post. :)

    09/01/2009
    • Updated HP ProtectSmart (3D DriveGuard) Hard Drive Protection to version 4.0.3.1.

This new package can simply be executed; it does not need to be extracted and installed using the Device Manager.

Edit: Updated the original post again with new LightScribe System Software. Only install this if you have a LightScribe-enabled disc drive.

    • Updated LightScribe System Software to version 1.18.8.1.

A few changes to the original post, some due to feedback from NBR forum users.

    09/03/2009
    • Removed HP QuickTouch.
    • Updated Realtek USB 2.0 Card Reader driver to version 6.1.7600.30103.
    • Updated Realtek driver links due to redirecting issues.

The main reason I am removing HP QuickTouch is because it is not really a driver, but more of an optional add-on that isn't very useful. Also I updated Realtek driver links due to problems of properly redirecting to the appropriate drivers.

A second update for today -- I reverted the BIOS release back to F.06 due to an unknown reason on HP's part . The Intel CSIU package has been released four days ahead of the projected release date. :)

    • Reverted BIOS to version F.06.
    • Updated Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility to version 9.1.1.1019.
    • Updated HP Quick Launch Buttons to version 6.50.4.2.

You can view the Intel CSIU release notes here.

On another note, HP will be adding Intel WiFi Link 1000 cards to the dv3t and CQ35. As a result, I will be posting new Intel WiFi Link 1000 drivers soon that will add this support. The current version is 12.5.0.57 on Intel's website; HP will be releasing version 12.5.0.59 on or before October 22, the same day when Windows 7 reaches general availability ( SP44948).

Edit: Also, coming on or before October 22: HP Integrated Bluetooth Module driver version 6.2.0.9602 (7.0 C, SP44774).

A few driver updates now on the original post. :)

    09/06/2009
    • Updated HP Integrated Bluetooth Module to version 6.2 E (thanks dannyres).
    • Added Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility version 9.1.1.1015 for troubled Windows 7 users.
    • Updated NVIDIA graphics driver to version 186.91 for Windows Vista and Windows 7.
    • Updated Intel Graphics Media Accelerator for Mobile Intel 4 Series Express Chipset Family to version 15.15.4(.64).1872 for Windows 7.

Remember to uninstall all previous versions of the NVIDIA graphics driver prior to installing the newest package.

It has also come to my attention that there may be some drivers on the original post which are older than the ones that come with Windows 7. I am investigating this issue at the moment, and will update as necessary when I have more info.

The audio card for your notebook is more likely from IDT, and is not the NVIDIA High Definition Audio. If you tried installing the NVIDIA v186.81 drivers, it should have also installed the NVIDIA audio driver too (which I'm sure it didn't because it's not compatible with the IDT card). Did you try installing the IDT Windows XP driver on the original post?

You can try extracting the contents of the downloaded packages and install both components using the Update Driver wizard in the Device Manager control panel. Also make sure that you are getting the correct 32-bit or 64-bit package depending on your version of Windows XP.

I was going to suggest trying the HP drivers, but I realized that HP does not provide Windows XP drivers for the dv3t.

Thasks for your quick feedback, I have done that already but could not do Update Driver, but rather got it from the Add new hardware, and then add new hardware wizard. again with no success

either the HW is not compatible with the adapters, or as you stated it is completly different brand as for the audio (IDT instead of NVIDIA)

    Any other direction you suggest?

An application update to MediaSmart MVP is now available that "resolves an issue with the system losing the Internet connection when using a D-Link Wireless-N router." Version 2.2.2829 must be installed first before installing this patch (which is also available on the original post). I consider this application update optional since not everyone is affected, but it is nevertheless posted for those having this exact problem.

    Version: 2.9.2.3214
    Link: ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software10/COL29904/pv-74419-1/sp44348.exe

@ebadawi: Can you go to the device properties for the unknown devices and provide their Device IDs? By providing the IDs, it will be easy to identify what they are and find the appropriate drivers for them.

New audio drivers are out on Microsoft Update and are now up on the original post. This hopefully will fix issues that some of you may have encountered.

    09/24/2009
    • Updated IDT High Definition Audio driver to version 5.10.6230.0 for Windows XP, and version 6.10.6230.0 for Windows Vista and Windows 7.

Just to be safe, remember to uninstall all previous versions of the audio driver prior to installing the newest version.

Edit, 09/25/2009: It seems HP is trying to do some catching up as well -- these new audio drivers are also now available as official Softpaq distributions. I updated the links because the Softpaqs make installation much easier.

The version number of this driver is 6.10.6225.0 and they really need to do something about that ugly icon in the volume property.

After I installed this, the remote stop working ... I reverted back to 2.7.2.0. and it work again.

@Wanderermy: Oops...didn't realize that the IDT driver was the older version. I put back the Microsoft Update link for the Vista/7 driver. Thanks!

For the ENE CIR driver, are you using Windows Vista or Windows 7? The HP documentation says that the driver only works with Windows 7, but the INF appears to show that both Windows Vista and Windows 7 are compatible. Did you also try to restart the computer after installing the new driver?

the ENE CIR Receiver driver version 2.7.4.0 does not work for my dv3 either.
    reverted back to v2.7.2.0.

im on rtm windows 7 ultimate x64 btw.

    edit:

it installs perfectly, no errors encountered during setup. however, the remote does not work when you use it eg. mute, vol up/down, pause etc.

Due to problems with the current ENE CIR Receiver driver, version 2.7.4.0 has been removed and version 2.7.3.519 has been posted.

Also, MediaSmart DVD 3.0 is here! Other MediaSmart 3.0 utilities should be released pretty soon. The documentation shows that MediaSmart 3.0 will only work with Windows 7, not currently sure about Windows Vista. I need confirmation as to whether this works on Windows Vista.

    10/08/2009
    • Updated ENE CIR Receiver Driver to version 2.7.3.519
    • Updated MediaSmart DVD to version 3.0.2815 for Windows 7.

On another note, I am also beginning the process of updating the driver threads to include upcoming refreshes. This includes the Intel-based HP dv3-2200 to dv3-2299 series and the Compaq CQ35-300 to CQ35-399 series.
