NOTE: Reconstruction of this post is in progress, due to the XenForo transition. Aside from what is already marked and lack of functional links, please let me know if any information is missing or inaccurate.

As part of my ongoing, informal commitment to help assist those who had performed clean installs on their HP notebooks, I've decided to take on the duty to post the latest drivers that are compatible with the following notebooks. Please let me know if you find newer drivers so that I can update this post!

    Compatible Notebooks

    Drivers

All of these drivers come from HP's website, Microsoft Update, and from other reputable websites (including other manufacturers). All of the drivers here are also WHQL Certified or digitally signed drivers, available as of the date when this post was updated. These drivers should be compatible with the notebook series stated above, but I am not responsible for technical difficulties that can occur as a result of improper driver installation!

The process of installing and updating drivers is for ADVANCED/EXPERIENCED users only. Average users can use the drivers located at the HP support portals -- they're the safest and simplest way to go in terms of drivers for your specific model. Some of these drivers may work with notebooks other than the stated brand and models, but this is NOT guaranteed. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK -- only install these drivers if you know how to revert the changes that you have made should any problems be encountered.

    Intel Chipset Device Software

    Important Information
    • To ensure that all device drivers are updated, simply execute the downloaded setup file using the -overall parameter.
Example: If you saved the downloaded file as infinst911autol.exe to the root directory of C: drive, you can launch the Run command (Windows key + R) and insert "C:\infinst911autol.exe -overall" in the Open field (without the quotes). Press OK to begin the interactive installation process.
    • Starting with Intel Chipset Device Software package version 9.2.0.1016, the Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver may become overwritten with the driver that exists in the package if it is installed. Should such an instance occur, reinstall the Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver afterwards.

I do not have an account at the hphdx.net forums, but I could probably clone this thread to it (or, maybe I should make it exclusive to NBR and you can just link it from there to here -- this is actually more preferable so that I don't have to keep updating both threads :D).

Thanks, updated the original post. I just realized how silly HP is to supersede a newer version of MediaSmart TV with an older version on their driver pages. :)

That'll work. It makes more sense just to link to here anyway, that way you don't have to worry about updating both - like you said.

I have a question about the Intel WiFi driver. At Intel's page on how to configure Advanced settings on the adapter http://www.intel.com/support/wireless/wlan/sb/CS-025393.htm they say:

To achieve transfer rates greater than 54 Mbps on 802.11n connections, WPA2-AES security must be selected.

However, Linksys insists that WPA-TKIP should be used and it is the best. Of course, my XP SP2 laptop on my wireless network doesn't have WPA2. Maybe SP3 would change that. I've not downloaded it, just in case I have to do a repair install.

My router is a Linksys WRT54GL, in case you want to know. Still haven't installed Linux yet, no time or energy to learn/install, but this router is supposed to be compatible with both. And no, I haven't downloaded third party firmware, just Linksys' latest.

I just received a new router, second level technician said mine was broken, but I am having the same problem. Every now and then it will drop the signal, it will eventually come back on all by itself. In the meantime, I can't surf the Internet. It reports not being able to see my network, or sees it, I manually connect even though it is supposed to automatically connect, it says connecting/connected and a few seconds later, it has disappeared again. Grrrr.

    Any advice?

I assume you have the 5100agn card as I do. Forget trying to connect to wireless N speed as it is unstable. I just force it to connect to wireless G. Although slower, its fine now.

After testing some of these drivers on Windows 7 RTM, I added Windows 7 compatibility designations to the following:

    • Intel WiFi Link 5100
    • Synaptics TouchPad
    • HP Integrated Bluetooth Module
    • HP Quick Launch Buttons

Please let me know if any of the other drivers listed on the original post are compatible with Windows 7 (if they aren't already designated). Thanks!

What driver/software handles the soft eject button -- QuickTouch or QuickButtons?? Could those names be more confusing?

My eject button does nothing under Windows 7 and I'm hoping to correct that!

Thanks for the excellent driver guide!

    • Updated Realtek Ethernet/LAN driver to version 7.005 for Windows 7.
    • Added IDT High Definition Audio Codec version 5.10.6209.0 for Windows XP.

    Justinkw1,

About the Added Windows 7 designation to the IDT High Definition Audio Codec, you just added.

    I see this:

    # Windows Vista x86, Windows 7 x86:
    # Windows Vista x86, Windows 7 x64:

    Isn't suppose to be:

    # Windows Vista x86, Windows 7 x86:
    # Windows Vista x64, Windows 7 x64:

    ?

@DJ-R: Thanks for finding another mistake. Fixed :D

@jonathan: Yes, these drivers work with the HDX16T (the "T" just means that it uses an Intel processor, which is what we have here). Please be sure to read the notes that I have posted for some of the drivers; they usually contain important information!

    Justin,

The 22nd of July I got 2 updates from Windows Update, one related to the IDT Audio Codec (which you have correctly reported, 6.10.6209.0), and another one related to the Realtek driver, made by Microsoft, which reports version 7.2.1127.2008, probably you can find a Microsoft cab for this one on the windows update site. It would be interesting to know the differences between this driver and realtek's latest, I think I'll stick to Microsoft's driver for now.

The last link you provided for RealTek's drivers, that opens up the homepage for the latest drivers points to the wrong chipset, the correct link is: http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads...d=5&Level=5&Conn=4&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false

Thanks for your work...this thread is very useful. :)

Thanks for providing the correct link -- fixed it in the original post. You can tell that I had overlooked some things while I was trying to "port it" from the other driver thread. :D I appreciate everyone's hard work in helping me find and correct any inaccurate information.

The Realtek LAN driver provided by Microsoft Update is an older driver than the one I posted, but it's still interesting. The version number scheme is different on the Microsoft driver, which confuses me slightly.

    T doesn't mean Intel I believe.

    Mine is HP HDX-16 that's it with Centrino 2 Core 2 Duo P7450 2.13 Ghz @ 1066Mhz FSB.

    Justin,

it's not a different numbering scheme. I just found out that the version of Realtek's driver you posted is actually 7.5.730.2009 (you can correct the version on your first post), here's the numbering scheme info:

    - 730.2009 is the release date (07-30-2009, July 30 2009)
    - in the .inf they wrote 7.005.0730.2009, but that's in WinDDK format (filling zeros), it translates to version 7.5.730.2009 (their webpage is also wrong ;))

Another thing: nVidia released version 190.38 of forceware drivers (WHQL), and LV2GO released the working .inf for mobile users, did you think about publishing those? They're working greatly on my HDX18. :D

A beta 190.56 is also out, but I prefer to stick with WHQL versions.

Hey Axel Foley, how is the new "NVIDIA 190.38 Driver" doing for you and what is the difference from the newest version for laptops?

Thanks for posting this. I was having troubles trying to get my HDX16 working right with Windows 7. Does someone have a driver for the HD protection sensor? The one from the HDX18 thread was causing me problems in Win 7.

They're doing great, I never tried the version for laptops, I'm a "last version" maniac so when I installed W7 RTM I found out version 190.38 and installed those, so I can't compare them.

I still can't understand why nVidia, since they use a universal driver model, keep the desktop drivers ahead of the mobile ones. Let's hope this will change in the near future. ;)

    Bird,

    I'm using HP 3D Guard driver, v4.0.2.2 (June 19, 2009)

    ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp44001-44500/sp44012.exe

And it seems to work fine with W7.

The "T" does indeed mean that you are using an Intel-based notebook (since the platform is an Intel Centrino 2 with an Intel Core 2 Duo CPU)...it is just HP nomenclature. It's usually omitted in this series since an AMD version of the HDX16 and HDX18 doesn't exist. :)

Yes, I know the last part of the version number was the build date of the Realtek driver. Your explanation does make a lot more sense, though. Sometimes Realtek rebuilds the drivers and keeps the major and minor version numbers the same while changing the release date part of the version number. Usually I do not post this part of the version number due to the very minor changes that occur (and I also don't have to keep updating the version numbers all the time, since Realtek releases drivers very frequently). I also keep the filling zeroes there in order to preserve the format they've got going with the Windows XP and Windows Vista drivers.

I am also aware that desktop NVIDIA graphics cards have version 190.38. However, modifying the INF in the driver so that they work on notebooks will cause the loss of WHQL certification. As I mentioned in the original post, I am posting only WHQL certified drivers as long as there is one. But thanks for suggesting this -- for the adventurous, LV2G is the best resource for modified drivers! (I am also a member there too :D)

Well, for me WHQL means that MS has stressed tested the drivers and they are not buggy...I know that this comprises the .inf file, but that's a configuration file, and if you get the right one the risk is acceptable, better than beta drivers. :)

After all, what would be the risk? You can always rollback to a previous version (never had to...) and while we're at it: there's no fun with 0% of risks. :D

    Justin,

the HP 3D Guard driver is working fine on W7, did you find incompatibilities? I'm asking because I don't see W7 listed under the supported OSs in the first post.

Thanks for confirming that the DriveGuard driver is working in Windows 7. I was not able to test whether the DriveGuard driver was working because I don't have a laptop with a hard drive that utilizes this feature. I've added the designation now.

I love this thread which is great to keep all HDX users up to dated with Windows 7.

I feel that the HP Support is a bit behind.

Any of you ever have issue with the Smartmedia Menu (On Screen Display) that keeps on crashing or freezing up randomly?

I really hate HP programming, poor HP softwares and bugged all time but their hardwares are solid.

An NVIDIA graphics driver update for Windows Vista and Windows 7 is now available on the original post. This driver originates from the Microsoft Update Catalog.

    08/21/2009
    • Updated NVIDIA GeForce graphics driver to version 186.42 for Windows Vista and Windows 7.

It is strongly recommended that you first uninstall all previous drivers prior to installing this new one.

About the Intel Matrix Storage Manager:

The laptop I first got in early January I think had, on the menu, something Intel which opened to show the state of your hard drive. My current laptop, which I received in late January, roughly, does not have that. I asked our Canadian HDX technician about this and she immediately said "Intel Matrix Storage Manager." She said I could go to Recovery Manager/Advanced/Hardware Drivers. However, it wasn't there. She then just supposed that they had deleted it because it wasn't useful or something.

I had a bookmark that lead me to Program Files\Intel\Intel Storage Manager...but it now says that location is missing.

BUT in HP System Information, under Software, Installed Drivers is... Intel Matrix Storage Manager 6.2.0.1019 !

The desktop link you posted looks too complicated for this lady to wade into. But I'd like the one I had. Or how to revive the files that go with the driver I have installed.

Anyone have this on their laptop? If so, pllease PM me/upload it and post the location. It's just a little, niggly thing, but it irritates me no end not to have it.

Well for Nvidia updates... I rather look into LaptopVideo2Go most of the time.

    http://forums.laptopvideo2go.com/

They have series 190.xx for a while and I am using 190.40 Vista64 on my HDX without issues.

I wonder why nVidia didn't release these drivers on their site.

Anyway, they just released v190.62 WHQL for desktops.

I'll wait for the modded inf and will install these. :)

It is fine if you post modded drivers -- even though they are not "officially official" drivers, some people might feel adventurous...after all, this is basically a thread dedicated to getting the latest drivers to work for the HDX16/HDX18. :D I just post WHQL certified drivers because they are original, and usually require no modifications beyond downloading it and executing the setup file.

Just use good judgement and post modded drivers if you feel it is major and most of all important. Besides, if you post modded drivers from time to time, it gives the thread a bump. :)
