    hey everyone,

i am facing some problems which are getting annoying now with my compaq presario v5000 notebook.

firstly when I turn the lid down and open again my laptop does not go out of the standby mode without being restarted. secondly when i shut it down it does not shutdown by its self and i have to manually shut it down by holding down the power button.

lastly i also want to know how to reinstall the windows on my laptop without a recovery cd because i dont have one.

    awaiting help

    thankyou

Sounds like you have some Windows issues...update your BIOS and make sure that you are running with the latest drivers and everything. Update Windows, and do a MemTest (google MemTest) to make sure you're RAM is okay...sometimes patchy RAM leads to issues too. Run a Virus scan too, and uninstall/reinstall any Norton software you have...Norton gave me a ton of startup/shutdown issues when I still had XP.

As far as reinstalling Windows, if a friend has a disc you can install with YOUR key. You need to download your drivers though from HP's site. Did you delete the restore partition on your notebook? If not, you may be able to create the discs yourself (we all have to since HP doesn't provide them) but it will have all the bloatware on them.

i still have the partition in my hard drive but i dont know how to create a backup on cd's???

and can you elabrate on the procedure on how to update the BIOS?

i read sumwhere that if you press f10 or f8 at start up then the windows reinstalls itself on its own.

Cool. While I have one of the business machines, this should still be the same.

    Creating the Recovery Discs
You will need a few DVD+R (not DVD+RW)...3 I think.
Insert one blank into your drive.
Click on Start->HP Backup and Recovery Manager->Create Rescue Discs or Create Backup Discs. While the menu names might be different that's the idea.
Use the wizard to create the discs.

You can hit one of those keys (and I don't know which one...F11?), but that would work.

You can also order the discs from this page, but it will cost somewhere between $10-$20. About the same price as the DVD discs you'll need so the choice is yours.

    Updating BIOS
Go to this site and download the SP to your desktop or other location of choice.
Run the application...it will update the BIOS for you.

F10 is for BIOS. As for F8, it appears to just ask you what OS you wish to boot. Since I only have one, I had just XP Home listed as a choice. It then started normally.

Do you have a listing under "All Programs" that says System Recovery?

That is probably XP's native System Restore, which I never found to work very reliably anyway.

Here is something you can try. Go to the Windows folder on your "C" drive, open it and find a folder called "Creator". Open this folder and find the "CD Creator" executable, which has an icon of a CD. Double-click on it and the HP Recovery Program should launch, which will allow you to make the recovery discs.

See if this works for you.

Hmmm. It seems as if the HP recovery software is entirely missing from your computer.

Personally, it looks like there is two choices. One, call HP and see if they will send you Recovery discs. Two, get a hold of an OEM Windows XP CD and reinstall windows with that (using your original key). Just make sure to download all of your drivers from HP and burn them to disc so that they can be used after reinstalling Windows.

BTW, If you use an OEM Windows CD, you will lose the pre-installed programs that were on your machine when you got it.

there is a SWsetup folder in my c:/ drive, which i think i read somewhere contains all the drivers, so should i write this folder on a cd?

Yes. Burn that folder to a disc so you can use it to reinstall drivers and apps.

No problem, as there are no silly questions when it comes to an expensive piece of hardware. Had I not already been through your situation, I'd be asking the same questions. :)
