I am looking to buy a laptop at Costco because of its refund policies. Even if I use it and it breaks or doesn't work, I can just simply return in within 6 months. The downside is that they don't have macbooks which I want. So I have to settle for something else. The one they have of HP I like is the dv5117. It is the one laptop ok out of all other ones. How is that laptop? Would it be a big switch from my current laptop. It is a thinkpad t41 1.4ghz, 256mb ram. Will I notice a big difference doing daily stuff like writing papers, browsing, and some work.

It is a pretty decent notebook and you probably will see some difference(probably not any big difference) in doing daily stuff mainly due to the increase in RAM. It might be a good idea to just to increase the RAM in your T41 and upgrade the HDD to a 5400rpm/7200rpm which will yield similar improvements at a lower cost than a new notebook. Ofcourse if you want to buy one then the dv5117 should be a nice upgrade over the T41.
