Hi i'm new to this forum. I recently just purchased the HP dv5-1004nr computer outlet priced for $649 at best buy. I figured with the fast processer and its room for 8g of memory, it would be a good deal. This computer does not have a firewire port.
In my manual it briefly discusses the expansion port 3 input/output signals. Under feature were it lists IEEE 1394 it says no support.
Can a firewire card of some kind be installed despite what the manual says? If i desided to download my hd video from camcorder, video would be downconverted using usb on this particular camcorder as it only suports usb1.1
    Thanks for the reply

Wow thanks for the quick response. Any reason why the manual states that the computer does'nt support IEEE 1394 on input output signals, or is it refering to something else?

Only dv5t's with dedicated graphics cards have firewire and gigabit ethernet.

Well it doesn't natively support IEEE 1394. They can't say "supports blank interface after expansion" or it'd be false (or at least misleading) marketing. It doesn't support IEEE 1394, but it DOES natively support the expresscard interface. So anything that converts expresscard to anything else, it SHOULD support (expresscard is intended for expansion - adding ports and functions not natively on the computer)

So in that case, a aftermarket expresscard withe firewire port will work for me right?

Right, that's the purpose of having an expresscard slot. Adding things the laptop didn't have on its own.

The dv5-1000us (Intel) has integrated graphics, but has the IEEE 1394 Firewire connection...

I saw that deal on the BB website earlier this week, $300 off retail price! I actually recommended it to another NBR member just last night. Hope you enjoy!

Here's an review of the dv5z with the same processor and integrated graphics as yours...thought you might be interested- http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=4486

Thanks, for some reason the touch controls for volume and a few others will stop working. For some reason when i hit stop button, the controls work again. Also for such a good computer otherwise, the battery really sucks... this computer is mainly for my wife or on trips, so a better battery would help.
Did'nt mean to get off topic... Thanks guys.

When you choose in the CTO page it omits firewire and gigabit if you choose integrated.

On pre-built models it might vary.

    Its really weird.

Yeah I don't understand HP and their inability to pop in a 1394 controller or Gigabit ethernet if you don't have a dedicated GPU. If the same holds true for their AMD Turion + 780M laptops, then they have issues since the HD3200 IGP is like just as powerful as the HD3450.

Well my friend bought a Hp with a less powerful amd turion dual core 60. Mine is the turion ultra dual core 80. His has the firewire port with no hmdi. Mine has hmdi but no firewire port. I thought his had integrated graphics like mine but i could be wrong.
