My July 2010 purchased 1011NR is now out of warranty by 2 months and started to give display problems for first time after getting rather hot with 14 hours of work use - not gaming, just work. Black snowy artifacts or triangular shaped flicker within Windows but just occasional snowy artifacts if the Splash start up o/s without Windows.

Is this related to failed video chip? How easy is it to repair or does it need a whole new motherboard - if latter might as well buy a new laptop?

if the gpu is actually damaged you do need a new motherboard.
