Where can I get the LCD cable used in the new 1080p DV6? I will replace the LCD cable in the 720p DV6 with it and install a 1080p screen and tell you guys how it goes.

Unless the LCD cable in the 720p DV6 is already compatible with 1080p screens, which no one has confirmed yet.

any ideas on this ? I was looking at putting in a 1080p screen but there isnt a whole pile of information out there.

Is it hard to take the screen out, put in a new 1080p, change cables and just start up again ?

It shouldn't be hard you just need the right parts.

The real problem is if the motherboard on both systems have the same socket/cable. I would assume that the socket is the same, but there is a chance that the cables could be different.

[Sorry about the double post, but I thought it was worth it]

I managed to be able to take apart the screen (or part of it) by only removing the bezel. It's a little hard to work like that but manageable and less risky. Getting the bezel off requires some force/finesse. I broke a small corner latch-thingy, but it didn't make a real difference.
Here are some pics I took to document the process.

These are just some general pics

Here are the labels that are on the screen

    And here is the port/cable

The port and the cable are both 40 pin (the cable is extremely flimsy), so I would "assume" that the new screen would work, but I don't know anything for sure. And there is no inverter that someone had mentioned in a parallel thread. Finally, sorry about the graphics overload and low quality iPhone pics

P.S. Can we unify all of these screen replacement matters here in this thread. And as always rep please

excellent job speedking261, we should be one step closer to figuring out whether it's possible to use the 1080p screen

    I love you.

We need to know whether the LCD cable is dual channel LVDS or single channel. I can't find anything on the LCD cable in that pic online (I'm sure others will be able to pry some information out of the pics you got). If there isn't any information on that cable, we have to find out how many of the 40 pins actually connect to the screen, if it's single channel I believe something like 8 pins won't be used. I'm not sure how to do this...

    I just found this:
    http://www.yslcd.com.tw/docs/product/N156B6-L0B.pdf

According to page 12 the screen that's currently in our laptops requires a single channel 40 pin LVDS cable (judging by the amount of reserved pins), which means HP probably used a single channel LVDS cable...which probably means we need to replace/mod our LCD cable as well to replace the screen. All screens 900p or higher require a dual channel cable.

All in all, I can pretty confidently conclude we will need to replace/mod our LCD cable to replace the screen with a higher resolution screen. Question is, where would we get a replacement LCD cable? Maybe the LCD cable from the new 1080p DV6s will work? You can only use LCD cables made for your motherboard, and I assume the new DV6s will be using the same motherboard.

Or, maybe the LCD cable from the DV7 will work...since the DV7 uses a 900p screen the LCD cable is probably already dual channel...

Or maybe you can just take KLF's advice below and find out if all the pins are being used, lol.

If you unplug that and turn it around, you'll see if all the pins are there or not.

not to hijack the thread...so this is the last thing!

I wonder if this is in-part why LCD prices were higher in the earlier part of the decade. In 2005 when I purchased my 19" LCD it was $400. Not too much later those same screens were retailing $200...maybe after the price fixing was discovered?

Anyway. Back to figuring out the efficacy of swapping out screens! (and finding the right cable to do so!)

I didn't look at the actual pins because the cable is really flimsy, and I'm a little paranoid about breaking it. I might disassemble it later because I think a hinge is loose. If I do, I will try to take a pic of it.

    Update:
I was running some spare part numbers through HP site and the prices are crazy.
The rubber screw covers on the bezel (641810-001): $24.70
    The webcam/mic (639387-001): $37.05
    The hinge caps (641807-001): $30.40
    The cable (644362-001): $30.40
    The 720p screen (640445-001): $237.50

I figured that there prices would be crazy, but $25 for 2 pieces of rubber? Just these pieced add up to over 30% of my laptops cost. Thank God for OEM/3rd party sellers.

    Update number B:
I couldn't help myself (yeah, I know my life is sad) I removed the screen again to look at the cables pins. All 40 pins are used. I tried to take a pic, but my phone couldn't get a good shot.

Really? So all 40 pins had a wire going to it? KLF, is this all we need to confirm the laptop screen can be upgraded? Is there something we're missing? Cause I find this hard to believe lol, none of the previous HP pavilion laptops could take a higher res screen.

    :( no
The cable is warped in foil and it would be difficult to see it with out potentially ruining it. Maybe someone more knowledgeable should open it up and make their diagnosis. I have proven that it is not too hard. I dissassembly and reassembly only take like 5-10 mins.

[THEORY]This is just a thought, but I feel like HP knew that they would offer an upgraded screen option at some point in time. (maybe supply issues at the release time?) 1080p is becoming standard, so wouldn't it make sense that they would have only cables that are compatible with both as opposed to buying two sets of them?[/THEORY]

Then again they may purposely use a single channel cable so people can't upgrade their screen themselves and are forced to pay HP for the 1080p screen.

Someone should try it before I say it works for real. Chances increase a lot if the cable is fully connected, normal cable wouldn't work for sure.

Normally low-res cable looks like this:

That's just some random lcd cable I had in my trash.

This one clearly does not have all external pins, but the on on my dv6 does (again, sorry I couldn't get a good pic). I guess the next step is for some one braver to check out the wire configuration under the foil.
With my impatience, it will probably wind up being me ;)

If you remove the bezel will hp still take the laptop back within the 21 day return period? I only have 3 days to return the laptop if it turns out the screen can't be replaced...if hp will still take it back I will try to replace the screen with a higher res screen as soon as possible.

And speed, can you please get a clear shot of the pins so I can be assurred this will work lol.

Can someone link me a good 1080p screen that should be compatible?

As long as you don't break anything they wont know or care.

I didn't have any clear pics, but here is the best one that I had.

Also as someone said before, all the pins may not have wires running to them.

This is a link to one that I found on another thread. I think it is the cheapest, too.

Anyone yet bothered to find if the service manual for the new dv6 models is available already? Part numbers for the LCD cables would also be of interest :) Especially if compared to the numbers with current models.

Some one posted earlier that the new screen is the B156HW01 V.7, but I don't know for sure. They could be mistaken. It was in one of the earlier threads about swapping screens.

If we bought the cable that is compatible with B156HW01 V.4 then does the screen work with our dv6-6xxx, hence it does has the 40 pin port?

Do you think this is the right thread to post this question in? This has been discussed multiple time on this board.

It is part of the Synaptic PalmCheck utility. Right click the Synaptic tray icon and go to TouchPad Properties then to the PalmCheck option and turn it off.

would the screen of the envy17 be any way the same as the dv7t one in the sence that would it fit on the dv7t cuz its 1080p..or would there there be more cable problums and stuff!? It has a standard 40 pin LED data input connector. The metal frame of the screen has screw holes in the right place to transfer any existing side brackets from your current screen

I installed a 1080p lcd into the dv6. I can confirm the cable does not have the bandwidth for it. Now I have to revert the change...unlike some other notebooks I have, the swap was very diffcult.

1080p screen requires 2 channel LVDS cable, we need the dv6-6100 1080p cable in order to make it work.

Good job testing it. Did you do a full disassembly as per the manuals instructions or did you follow the minimal disassembly instructions that brnkcv (from the modding thread) and myself followed?

Do we know if the ports on the motherboards are the same? My assumption is that they wouldn't waste money making a separate MB just for a slightly different laptop.

My 1080p screen arrived today. I got the glossy version (v.7) since glossy came with my laptop.

Anyway, the cable is not being shipped until the 19th of this month and I picked 10-20 day delivery time so I have a while until I get to try it.

I am still a bit confused as to how to install the cable. There is a thread on this forum but he did not exactly indicate where the cable fits into the DV6 ? Is it obvious ? I see where it fits in the back of the screen but where do you wire it to ? There is also the webcam to deal with.

Attached is two pictures of the screen. Just one thing, it says V.5 instead of V.7 ? Should I be concerned ?
