Using coupon code NBJ7558 (33% off customizable dv6tqe $999.99 or more) I can get 1080p anti-glare for about $100 more. Is it a noticeable difference compared to 1366x768?? Majority of time will be spent on it watching netflix, web browsing and gaming.

PS - Extra desktop space is not a factor for me.

Yes. Even if you don't need the extra resolution, it's a higher quality display. Don't skimp on the parts of the laptop that you will be directly interacting with every time you use it -- the display will make more of a difference than most of the parts inside.

Absolutely yes! Probably the one upgrade that will impact what you do most, use your eyes. Plus, I like the anti-glare matte look compared to the mirror like glossy look. You can just about do any other upgrade yourself later (ram, SSD, HDD, etc.) for about the same money with just a little technical skill but upgrading the screen will not be easy or economical after your purchase.

Pull the trigger, if $100 bucks causes you to miss paying a bill or buy food for your family then hold off, otherwise do it.

The 1366x768 glossy screen in my dv6-6135dx is one of the nicer 1366x768 screens going, but I'd get the 1080p because it's still nicer in terms of contrast / colors, it's matte, and it's 1080p, three things that are well worth the $100 upgrade.

The thing you will use the most probably starts with the ... motherboard then maybe the processor... but the third thing is the display! Get the 1080 screen it is very nice.

YES. IT IS WORTH $1000 EXTRA.
Go look at a screen at Best Buy, they all look like @SS.
Look at a 1080p anti-glare screen :) You will probably find
    one at MicroCenter.

Without a doubt the most important upgrade you can get with this machine is the 1080p screen. The 1366x768 screen is one of the worst I have seen on a laptop. I've directly compared dv6's with the two screens and the 1080p wins on every account (Resolution obv, colors, brightness, etc).

The 1366x768 screen on my HP dv6 is one of the nicest 15.6" screens I've seen that's not a 1080p. but apparently they're not all that nice, more like they put whatever came in a big box on each machine at random. Mine has fantastic viewing angles, great color and contrast etc. Probably the best looking laptop panel I own right now. I've seen better on some workstation class machines like Dell Precision with IPS, but honestly it's a great looking screen. But the next 1366x768 dv6 off the line might look like crap. It's quite variable.

    I'm going to vote no.

First of all, you can easily get a 1080p display cheaper than 100$ and install it yourself, it's pretty easy and doesn't require insane technical skills, just a screwdriver.

2nd, for gaming, if you're gaming with a laptop, first post what GPU you'd be using (Guessing the 2GB 6770m). Also, note that a game that plays at 720p on a 768p screen appears to take up more space on the screen than on the 1080p screen (Meaning you can run a game at a lower resolution with higher framerate on a 768p screen than running it at a higher resolution with lower framerate on a 1080p screen that appears similar on both screens).

Lastly, since you aren't caring about the desktop space anyways, just save the money and upgrade the monitor yourself whenever you're ready to make the switch. That way, you get both screens in case one fails.

    EDIT:

I've made a diagram, if you will, about what a 1280x720 game would look like on 1080p and 768p screens, respectively.
The white area is the space the game would take up (Both screens would be 15.6")

I have the same situation with an Asus. Great laptop that was very cheap and it has a fantastic AUO screen. Another Asus I have that cost almost twice more has a lesser screen. I compared the great one to that of an XPS 15 FHD and the differences aren't that great considering the Asus cost half the Dell.

You never know what you'll get.

You are so wrong here: HP uses a different lvds cables for the 1080 and 720 displays. So, not only you would have to get the expensive FHD cable [$50] you also have to exchange the LVDS cable, for which you need to strip the laptop down to the mainboard... good luck with that!

I have the standard resolution, I experience no problems with it. It's perfectly fine for me. I'm very happy I got the i7 processor, and the Radeon 6770 in my laptop at the cost of the resolution. Frankly, I wouldn't care much if my screen was better than this.

Well looks like I might be reordering. I initially ordered my laptop with the 1gb option gfx card. To ensure myself getting either the 6770 or 7690, i reordered with the 2gb. Hp resolutions put in a request to return the first order to shipper to ensure my credit is processed. However they marked both orders to be returned to shipper!!! Grrr... So if I do have to reorder I guess I'm getting 1080p...

    It's worth it.

Games like SWTOR and Battlefield 3 need to have slightly lower settings for playing at full 1080p resolution, but the 6770 still seems to handle them well enough though, and the image quality at that resolution more than makes up for it.

This thing makes my 22" 1680x1050 LCD look like crap.

Yup definitely upgrade to 1080p, initially i didn't think it would make a noticebale difference and ordered my dv7 w/ the 900p screen, boy was i wrong... blu-ray movies looked like sh**t on that thing, fuzzy almost pixalated looking. Returned it the next day for 1080p.

Sounds like you're going to be looking at images most of the time as opposed to text w/ your games and movies so you'll get your money's worth out of the upgrade.
