I really like the way the 12 cell battery lifts up my hp notebook, but I don't use the battery a lot and it adds more weight to the notebook than I like. The notebook is primarily used at home, plugged in.

Is there a lightweight, non-battery accessory that slides into the slot that lifts up the laptop; in other words a stand the same size and shape as the 12 cell battery.

    thanks.

if you look around the forum, 1 outstanding solution can be found: POST-IT
(i'd post the link to the thread, but I'm to lazy to look for it :p)

The first statement is a paradox. The notebook is used primarily at home, yet the extra weight of the battery is a problem? Huh? If the laptop is mostly sitting on a desk, then the weight is no big deal.

I took my laptop to the UK and had the case packed with all kinds of stuff because they only allow 1 carry on. It was no big deal carrying it, and the 12 cell battery lasted for about 5 hours on the plane. Just think of the huge battery as a 5 hour UPS.

Your reply didn't even try answer my question, so why even reply!!

Though it's really none of your business, I have more than one home and, when at one, go back and forth between a few places. I'll determine if the weight of the battery is a big deal or not for me personally.

So, do you have an answer to my question?

Thanks for the info. I'm not too lazy to look for it but came up with nothing. Perhaps I'm not using the best search phrase. Any suggestions?

well, actually, the answer really is POST-IT
I can't find it anymore either (though it's here somewhere), but one guy just took a pack of POST-ITs, and put them in the empty battery space (of course, you need to adjust for the right height) :D

While I agree weight limits can be personal, I have to ask why the venomous response when the reply was not unreasonable? The battery question pops up every so often and people sometimes forget about the advantages of the battery pack.

I often use my laptop on AC power too, but I would never remove the battery since as the other poster mentioned as it works great as a secondary power source if the AC happens to fail or dip below required levels, acting as a UPS in a way. I like having the battery there - losing important work because of a brief power failure is very annoying.

Everyone has their own opinions, but having a UPS or similar is something I've been using with desktops ever since I lost updates to an important document during a brief power hiccup about ten years ago. I always suggest a UPS as part of a computer system, especially since they're so cheap these days. I consider them essential for work-related computers.

I don't have an answer either, except to keep the battery pack in place or perhaps use some sort of improvised support device like a tilted shelf or similar. Perhaps the "POST-IT" comment was for the little sticky notes? That might do the trick.

    :)

My apologies if my reply seemed venomous; I can see how it may but it was not my intention. I just didn't understand why someone would determine for me that the weight is no "big deal." And who said I always used it at a desk.

The fact of the matter is that I am often mobile with it within my home and use it on my lap. I can, of course, get a six cell battery, but I just like that the notebook is slightly raised with the 12 cell version when I do use it on a desk.

And I wasn't questioning the value of a battery. I was simply asking if there was an accessory that would slide in place when I didn't need the battery and didn't want the extra weight. I think it's about seven ounces more than a standard battery.

Please remember, not everyone who comes to these forums are notebook tech savvy, gamers, travel for business or are even young. We all have different needs and, when asking a question, it's nice to get a helpful answer rather than saying something is "no big deal."

Again, apologies to robvia and anyone else who may have been offended by my response.

And thanks again to those who answered my question directly. Your assistance is much appreciated.

lol, I didn't understand why you wrote post it. I'll see what I can come up with, though I don't want to mess up the contacts.

Maybe when this battery dies I can drill a hole in it and empty out the contents. :p :D ;)

It's ok, I wasn't offended...just curious why it seemed hostile. No biggie.

    :)

By the way, I've never opened up the case and don't know if laptops have the flat CMOS backup batteries or if they use a rechargeable cell to maintain the CMOS settings like desktop motherboards?

If it's a rechargeable cell, then removing the battery pack isn't an issue. But if it's one of those flat lithium batteries (CR3216 or whatever) then removing AC power and the main battery pack will eventually kill the battery and lose the CMOS configuration. Not a huge deal, but it could be annoying.

So are you using Post-It notes, or something else?
