I opened up the laptop, turned it on, clicked on Firefox, visited this forum and then POOF! The whole system locked up. (Not blaming the forum, I'm only here several times a day!)

Nothing responded. I tried CTRL-ALT-DEL to get Task Manager, nothing. I finally held the power button to get it to shut off. Now it won't boot.

The volume lights come on, the lightning bolt for charging the power button is on but the hard drive light isn't even flashing. All I have is a black screen and nothing's happening.

Should I draw a chalk outline around it and call it dead?

    1. Does it POST?
    2. Does the HDD audibly spin?

All I hear is the DVD drive click twice like it always did, the fans come on and then nothing. The HDD light doesn't come on at all.

Forgive my lack of experience with this but what is POST?

Power On Self Test. It has to get past that before Windows starts to boot.

If you're not even seeing the BIOS startup screen (HP logo, etc) then the best thing you can do is call HP. If you bought it from a retail store I'd return/exchange it, quick, assuming the usual 14 day store return period. It sounds like a motherboard failure to me.

There's nothing at all appearing on the screen. It just sits there in black and doesn't do anything. I'm still in my 21 day return period from hpshopping so adios laptop. That bites but thanks a ton for the help.

You may also want to try the battery trick. Pull the battery and plug in the AC adapter and try to boot up without the battery plugged in. The laptop may be trying to run off a dead/faulty battery, even though the battery is new it can still be defective.

Does the laptop make any beeping sounds at all when you turn it on or does it go immediately to a black blank screen?

Also as netkiller said you can re-seat the ram, cant hurt at this point.

    Good luck,
