Can someone explane or post the differance in how the two displays look.

I have a Dm4t with the 1366x768 and I wanted to use it to edit photos. The images display is smaller than I expected.

I also have an Envy 14 on order due to ship any day now but it was also ordered with the 1366x768 display.

It would be great if somebody could post the 2 computer (envy14) one with the 1366x768 and 1600x900 of the same picture so I can see how the picture size shows on each display.

At very least can some one explane the differance in both display format. I ve heard with 1600x900 you can view 2 pages at the same time comfortablie.

    thank you

basically, the 1600x900 is a 28% increase in resolution. you will be able to fit...well... 28% more on the screen. if your really into photo editing get the 1600x900 res display. its a radiance screen which is apparently one of the best you can get as far as colors and brightness goes. the brightview 1366x768 is just a basic screen.

1600x900 will fit 2 windows nicely, depending on what you are doing. photos, maybe a video and a browser would be fine. even 2 browsers might be fine. one thing to note though is most web pages are designed with a 1024x768 res in mind, so 2 browsers probably wont be perfect.

at 1600x900 everything will be smaller - higher the res, the smaller the icons basically.

just so you know, i dont actually have the envy 14, though ive been reasearching it fo a month or so. im planning on getting it with the smaller res screen and using an external monitor when im at home.

Basically 1600x900 has a higher pixel density. It crams more detail in the same area of screen. What this means is that you can see more things on the screen at once, and even when things are smaller they are more clear.

If you want to edit photo's 1600x900 is almost certainly better, as you'll be able to more clearly see the photo you're looking at and able to view more of it on screen. I have an Envy 15 with a 1920x1080 screen, and it is absolutely amazing compared to my old laptop which was 1200x800.

The higher resolution screen is worth it, especially if you're editing photos like you said. I'm pretty sure you can call HP and tell them you want a different screen and they won't ship your current one. Or even if that one does ship, you can send it back and buy a new one.

My wife ordered an Envy 15 and HP made a mistake and shipped one with 1366x768 instead of 1920x1080, which is what she had ordered.

After having grown accustomed to 1080p, 768p looked blocky and very "old school." Lines, text and images were not as smooth.

I agree with Roger's comments about editing images on a higher resolution display. It also goes without saying that for editing and even watching 1080p video, the only way to view the files in their native resolution is with a 1080p display, and 900p is a huge improvement over 768p.

1080p is also much better for reading documents as you can easily and quickly zoom in and out and you can view two documents side by side if you need to compare.

As far as gaming goes, 1080p with detail settings maxed and HDR lighting is an entirely different experience from 768p. The higher resolution breathes new life even into older games. 900p is much closer to this experience; however, on with the 5650 card on the Envy 14, you may not be able to get playable frame rates from some of the more demanding games at 1600x900 with all detail settings maxed.

If you plan to watch 1080p video, I would recommend returning your laptop for one with 900p or 1080p display, or waiting for a while until the 900p replacement screens for the Envy 14 become available aftermarket. At this time, Screen Country has only the 768p replacement displays available for the Envy 14.

$300 is alot to pay for a resolution upgrade. If I call hp to get the envy 14 do you guys think they can be convinced to give the upgrade for free if it means keeping your business? I'm willing to threaten to get the macbook pro :p

I just purchased the Envy 14 Beats Edition, and the Radiance display wasn't an option. I'll probably wait until the Radiance is available aftermarket (if it's not already) and also give my wife some time to forget this purchase, and then I"ll upgrade it myself. That is, assuming it can be retrofitted.

I can certainly say that I'd rather have the Radiance display, and not just because of the resolution. This screen is okay in terms of color depth, brightness, and viewing angles, but just that--okay. Not great. I'd certainly welcome a better unit.

It's $200 more than the original price of the base model at product launch (HP reduced the price of the 1366x768 base model by $100 about 1 month after the E14 release).

The Envy 15 1080p matte option is $125 extra and the 1080p glossy is $200 extra and definitely worth it IMO.

Would everyone PLEASE STOP using p at the end of a computer display resolution! They're NOT TVs! The days of NI computer displays were over before the end of the last century!

    Here's the breakdown:

    1366x768 = Crap @ 14.5" WS
    1600x900 = Better @ 14.5" WS

    (Yes, Virginia, they're both non-interlaced)

    WS Computer displays @ 16:9 = Crap
WS Computer displays @ 16:10 = Better although I'd rather have 4:3 aspect ratio to get my vertical height back

If you want to talk typical TV then it's okay to add progressive or interlaced notations.

    Blu-ray & HD-DVD formats: 1920x1080p
    US HDTV formats: 1920x1080i & 1280x720p
US SDTV & DVD formats: 720x480i

Computer monitor resolutions used to be better but thanks to losers crying for "full HD" this is the crap resolution you get now.

Hmm, people are saying the higher res screen is 200$ more, but when I'm looking at places (I'm in Canada), it's 300$. Where are you guys buying yours? I really don't want to go over 1500$ and it would be nice to have 6gb of ram, 500gb HD, i5 + screen upgrade.

Like I posted in the beats unboxing post, wait for the ASUS! Yes, it's a $300 upgrade. The Envy 14 originally sold with the 1600x900 screen. People complained about the pricing being $100 over what they promised for launch. HP then "dropped" the price to "under $1,000" (that 99 crap doesn't work for me) and the screen with it. It was then a $200 option to up the resolution. HP increased the price another $100 and it's now a $300 option but some are counting from the original configuration.

    You savvy?

While that Asus looks like a nice machine, it's not really a direct competitor to the Envy 14, is it? I mean, the Asus is straight-up a gaming system, both in specs and looks. I certainly couldn't take it to work and use it to take notes in a business meeting... The Envy line seems more like high-end entertainment and productivity with lighter gaming as a sideline.

I also note that Asus has an 8-cell battery with 52w (vs. 59w in the Envy), so I can only imagine battery life with an i7 and discrete graphics (and not switchable?) will be somewhat less. So while the Envy's battery life isn't stellar, it'll likely make the Asus look downright paltry.

More back on topic, I'd rather have the standard Envy 14 with the Radiance screen. And if Costco starts carrying it within the 90 day return I have on this Beats Edition machine, I'll most likely switch it out. I wouldn't though, buy that Asus because it's really a very different kind of machine. For me, at least.

Yeah, it will have a 1.5-2hr battery life (the Asus) so the battery is nothing special and carrying 9-10LBS for hours (I commute a great deal to get to my campus) is a pretty big turn off for me, in addition to the campus having 1 plug for every 10 students and sometimes not having any at all :p

My 17" MSI gaming laptop that's currently getting repaired made my summer semester an awful experience. I'm never buying a laptop that has an extended battery sticking out again as well, since you have to remove the battery everytime you travel b/c the pressure/weight will over-time squeeze/loosen it and do significant damage.

This will be my first laptop and Im thinking it just maybe to much to ask to be able to do photo editing of all most any kind on a 14" laptop no matter what the display.

Who tied your underwear in a knot....

    1920x1080 is a 16:9 ratio. Why is 1600x900 crap? It's 16:9 too..

4:3 aspect ratio??? ? Maybe 10 years ago. And there are plenty of US HDTVs with 1080p. I don't understand where you're getting some of this information.

And its just a habit to say 1080p or something such as that. It's not like it matters either way. And TBH it tells you more information. I'd take more info than less of it.

I frequently work with 16x9 video files - in my case 16x9 is the optimal aspect ratio.

I should point out that 1600*900 is actually a ~37% increase from 1366*768:
Their respective "areas," in pixels, are 1440000 and 1049088. 1366*768 may be a ~27% reduction from 1600*900, but 1600*900 is a ~37% increase from 1366*768. (It's easy to get percentages confused though, because of the way they're asymmetrical like that.)

Also, in response to Wall of Voodoo: People refer to 1920*1080 as 1080p, even for computer screens, because 1080p actually designates a standard resolution. Saying "1080" alone would not, and writing out 1920*1080 is more painful. :p

Are you trying to somehow imply people's limited knowledge about computer resolutions means that they are part of the "dumbest generation"?

Get off your high horse pal. Calling it 1080p or 768p isn't making this the dumbest generation, but lashing out at people that don't understand things is.

No because someone found a study and got a confirmation bias and started finding other study/report/article/opnion that supported his theory. Then he disregarded anything that may refute his theory by over analyzing other reports and poking holes in it to invalidate them, yet doing nothing to substiate studies/reports he used!

Whoah...what just happened, I blacked out for a minute.

I find that 1080p(big because trying to p1ss someone off) is bit large. I have seen 1600x900 and its not perfect either. I love 1366x768.

I am a graphics artist and photographer. My friend has a dell 16' laptop
with 1366x768 every time I see her screen I want to throw up.

What is the use of having a 16 inch screen when there is hardly any workspace.

I just love my 1920 x 1080 HP Envy 17. Lots of space to work.

are you talking about? First off. Computer screens might all be progressive. No one cares if the p is there or not. Its common knowledge to just read it as a resolution.

Secondly, the digital age is what I am basing my entire career on even as a High School Senior. I maintain an A grade level in my school (My school uses a very strange system) in the 34th best High School in the nation which is a Specialized High School in NYC. (Specialized meaning I took the SHSAT and my score was much higher than average.)

Not only that, but I'm the president of the Computer Club at my school and every Friday I teach my club members about a security hole or exploit in some operating system or hardware flaw.
And its not just in Clubs, at NYU-Poly's Cyber Security Awareness Week (CSAW) me and two of my friends took first place in a computer forensics competition.

If I'm part of the dumbest generation and still worried about getting into college, then IDK what one would have to do to get into college b/c TBH all I wanna do is go to NYU-Poly. Not even that risky a choice.

This post has already gone incredibly far off topic, and if I incur the wrath of a mod (2.0) on me, I'm sorry for my inconvenience. But this idea that the digital world is dumbing children down, is ludicrous. It's ludicrous to generalize in such a way, and it's ludicrous to make that generalization in a Laptop Forum.

4:3 is silly primarily. If you want your vertical height, go buy an external monitor and orient it vertically.
Next 16:9 is the smarter way to go for people that just do regular things like watching HD Youtube Videos and such. It's the smarter idea for HP to build things for the regular consumer than for that one random dude that wants to buy the 16:10 ratio monitor so he gets a little more view of his editting timeline. Don't get me wrong, I do video and image editting and I can see the advantage of having the extra space. But theres no way I spend more time editting than watching movies and such.

Again as someone already said, get off your high horse b/c its taking you down the wrong road. divertankado is right there suggesting a 16:9 ratio and he/she is a graphic artist.

Picture is worth a thousand words (maybe you can read that many more with the extra resolution). Here is the Radiance versus Brightview, both 14.5 inch LED items.

Damn, wish I could still get one with radiance.

Does not bother me THAT much considering on on 1280x800. Yep, thats how crappy my res is and this is a 15.6" laptop as well.

Im sure if they reintroduce it they would be kind enough to replace the screen, I hope.

    :EDIT:

Because Im a sleuth, you are using a logitech wireless usb mouse. Im going to go ahead and guess the m305 in noir black with the white flourish at the top.

:p Close I was, its a good mouse for taking on the go. Its really weird though, since I've been using a old mouse that has lower dpi 300-800 or something, and now If I just slightly bump it it moves alot haha just need to get used to it.

Life would be so much easier if my Father understood technology, I mean I can buy it myself but its always easier if your parents do it for you. XD Its like talking to a brick wall sometimes.

Still shopping around for a envy 14, Im bordering on slight insanity brought on by obsession.

^^^ Hey Heavy. thanks for posting the pic; Not to take away from your post but a video is worth 10,000 words. I could easily adjust my web browser's zoom to make it appear narrower and with more space available on-screen.

How about a nice vid, showing the brightness being pushed all the way up on both displays, various nice HQ desktop backgrounds, and a video playing etc. to truly compare. ;)

I could probably do a video once I get a little time. Each was configured with the browser at the native 100% view setting. Brightness was set at the highest level for both screens. The extra view was simply 1600x900 versus 1366x768.

Okay...fair enough...I'll take your word for it...I could definitely see the Radiance does look brighter and cleaner though...and of cource the resolution doing it's work on the web page.

let's also make another thing clear -- the brightview isn't "crap" or "bad" it's still an LED screen. the higher resolution radiance is top of the line. but that doesn't mean brightview is the "bottom" of the line. LED is becoming very standard now, but it wasn't all too long ago things were not LED backlit. also remember that a higher resolution on a 14" screen isn't as nice as if it was a 17" screen you had there... you might go blind =) get an external monitor. 14" wants to be portable and when you do that...you sacrifice resolution. same thing happens when you get a netbook.

i don't think it's a show stopper by any means ... i'm a web developer and love photography... would i like the larger res? maybe if i was going to be away from my external monitor while editing photos... but no biggie. from a web developer's perspective, we aren't building web sites that are wider than 1024 yet :) so you aren't going to need to scroll horizontally or anything.

and yes, don't put p at the end of screen resolution it's not a tv :) and your movies will look just fine on the lower resolution too.

So, is this why my 22" HDTV that I bought to use also as a monitor looks better than I think it should? It's 1366 x 768.

720P resolution is fine for TV's 26 inches or smaller. I would think that a 22 inch at 1366x768 resolution as a monitor would make the icons look huge. Of course, it depends how close you are to the monitor. I have a 24 inch 1920x1200 monitor that I use with my Envy and that resolution feels comfortable.

Here is a 1366x768 window (the browser) on the 1600x 900 screen to highlight the gained space.

That is the native res of the screen, although I don't output at that res.

I posted a review for the Envy 14 Beats Edition elsewhere but I think it might be interesting here too. OK its in German but you guys can for sure figure out the part where they test the brightview display. Just by looking at the numbers I dare say that the brighview display is crap if you take the price of the laptop into account. Brightness is mediocre and the contrast ratio is really bad... plus the poor color space ...

So does the Envy 14 have 1600x900? All the reviews I read say yes but HP's site says no.
