I was a little skeptical about how good the sound would really be coming from a laptop and when I tested out a song, I was still underwhelmed. Audio sounds hollow through the speakers but sounds excellent with my headphones.

Is this just a typical case of poor-quality notebook speakers or do I have an issue?

To be honoust, I yet have to find a laptop that gives good audio from the speakers. They all sound crap, even if they have something like subwoofer they still sound very weak. I'm happy with the sounds that comes out of the headphones too, I can't care less about the speakers.

The Envy has the best sound I have heard from a laptop. The 17-inch Dell Inspiron from maybe two years ago also has good sound for a laptop. Notice that I've qualified my description of the sound quality in either case. Laptops will never produce great sound quality, unfortunately. lol At full volume, the distortion can annoy you. Envy has good bass. I can say that. My dv6000 was PATHETIC w/o headphones.

I've never found a laptop that has really great audio quality either, but the Beats Edition does have some of the best laptop speakers I've heard. External speakers will be better, but there's enough bass and depth there to use the machine without headphones every now and then.

I'm in the camp that doesn't care about the speakers on the notebook itself. They're fine, but nothing to write home about (and they're not particularly loud).

However, the sound coming out of the headphone ports is outstanding, and the best I've had. Before getting my Envy, I listened to music with my Zune 80GB, because it has great sound for a media player (the Zune is terribly underrated in my opinion). However, I now listen to music straight out of my Envy whenever I can because I find the experience to be so much better.

Again, I'd like to say that I don't expect much from these speakers, as they are what they are: laptop speakers. I just feel like there's a hollow sound to them that sounds off.
