I have a Compaq R3240US and it has an nVidia 440Go GPU. I have the resolution set at 1680x1050 and love that resolution. I don't know if my LCD panel is a WSXGA+ or not though. I don't recall it when I bought it. The question is, I am looking at two update paths: dv6275us and dv9230us. Both of these are WXGA+. Even so, will the video adapter allow me to set a 1680x1050 resolution, or is that limited by the panel?

It's limited by the panel, as far as I know.

If you want 1680x1050, the only HP consumer notebook that offers that resolution is the dv9000, which is 17".

LCD has a fixed number of pixels, you can't have anything more than "native" resolution

Here are the different options for the display on a dv9000t:

    17.0" WXGA+ BrightView Widescreen (1440x900)
    17.0" WSXGA+ BrightView Widescreen (1680x1050)
    17.0" WXGA+ Ultra BrightView Widescreen (1440x900)
