I have a DV7 with an i7-720QM and a 5650. The battery life is nothing to write home about. I get maybe a couple hours tops with my 9 cell battery. When it's running a demanding application, the area above the keyboard gets crazy hot. You definitely wouldn't want to leave anything sitting on that surface for too long, unless you intend to cook an egg or something.
