Yes, you can and that is what mostly it is used for. I used to have Outlook and browser on my Laptop and main development window( Eclipse) on a 19" external monitor.

What you are doing is typically call a "dual monitor" setup. For the people who are curious:
    - Goto your display properties
    - Look at your display settings
    - You should see a virtual window mark "2"
    - That's your second monitor which you can hook up a monitor or even a TV too
    - Click on it, and click the "Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor" box
    - Click apply or ok
    - Viola, dual monitor setup

I have a dual monitor setup on my desktop computer and a program I use which is really handy is call "Ultramon". It allows for a second taskbar, multiple backgrounds, and various cool features. And the best part is, it's independant from the main monitor. Meaning, you can have two complete different background on two monitors, taskbars will show only the program which it is on(1st monitor or 2nd monitor), and other stuff.
    Ultramon Software
This program will work with any multiple monitor setup, 2-3-4-etc. You might want to give it a try. Note that it's a demo.

    -Thanks
