I have just had my second LightScribe DVD drive faiure on my Compaq v2565us. the problem is that the drive doesn't spin fast enough to play a DVD (ROM, +R and +RW) at 1x. According to Nero DriveSpeed, the drive spins at .8x.

This problem was on the laptop the day I purchased it in January. HP sent me a replacement drive. The replacement drive worke fine, but now it has failed.

After going thru HP's text tech support and reloading drivers, it still [lays at .8x.

Has anyone else heard of or had this problem?

Have you ever played any ubisoft games or possibly others that have starforce on them? Starforce is a security thing that installs itself deep into your computer when you install a game with it and over time can reduce the burning/reading speed of your optical drive.

No. I'm not much of a gamer. I've checked to see if antything is residing on my computer that could be the culprit, but since the first drive came out-of-the-box doing this, I suspect the hardware. I'll update the thread when I get the replacement drive from HP.

Maybe the drive switched to PIO mode instead of DNA. This happend to me once for the DVD and once for the HDD - no obvious reason, other than extensive use of course.
Go to Device manager, Secondary IDE Channel, Advance Settings and check the Transfer Mode.

You may be on to something. The problem MAY be timed to my upgrading to BIOS F.24.

Nero InfoTool reports that my Master device on my secondary IDE Channel as having DMA off, but DMA is on on my HD on my Primary IDE Channel.

Device manager has my Secondary IDE Channel / Device 0 is grey'd out for Device Type, Transfer Mode: DMA if available and Current Transfer Mode: PIO Mode (and I can't change it).

The driver is a Microsoft driver 5.1.2600.2180 dated 7/1/2001.

Any ideas on how to force a DMA change?

Uninstall and reinstall the CD/DVD drive(Windows should be able to detect the drive after a reboot and install the necessary drivers). If it is stuck in PIO mode it might be due to repeated transfer time out errors.

Also check to see if there are any related errors in the system event logs.

    Fixed!

HP only asked me to uninstall the DVD/CD driver. By uninstalling both it and the IDE Channel Driver, it reinstalled perfectly after reboot.

    Thanks for the help!
