The drive may say it can burn at 16x, but in real life, you rarely get 'listed' speeds.

I've got an HP dvd940i drive, which says it can burn at 18x, but I haven't hit that in burning yet...

Laptop drives don't usually get a lot of official firmware support since they are mostly OEM. A lot will depend on the quality of the media. You can use DVD Identifier to find out who makes the discs. It is likely not Imation. Look them up on DVDRHelp.com to see what experiences other users have had with them. Taiyo Yudens are widely considered to be the best blank discs, both CDs and DVDs.

Yeah i doubt imation makes the discs themselves, theres only a few cd/dvd manufacturers out there and theyre probably rebranded. the thing is imation make some of the best ive used, better than the cheaper ones out there usually. and sure i shudnt expect 16x speeds but 4x is just too weird, even my old dell burned faster!

Well, it could be the media as well.

Try going with a good media type, like ZaZ suggested and see if that helps with the burn speed.
