Hello all, I'm having issues getting my HP to output 5.1 sound.
I recently installed my Turtle Beach Audio Advantage Micro recently and hooked up to my receiver via optical cable. I'm getting sound through my speakers and my receiver is recognizing the incoming digital stream. However, I can't figure out how to get my computer to output 5.1 on games and DVDs. I know my equipment is capable of doing so as the test tones on the playback device properties page work fine.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
edit: Okay, so I get 5.1 when I play a DVD though Media Center, but my games remain in stereo. Where do I change this setting?

The sound card has to have something like Dolby Digital Live or DTS Connect... it basically real-time encodes multi-channel audio and sends it out as a Dolby Digital 5.1 or DTS signal... only a handful of mid-high end cards have that ability to do that...
There is 5.1 audio when you play DVD because Media Center is using "pass-through mode"... it just passes the raw DD or DTS audio and allows your amplifier to decode it...
I looked up the specs for your sound adapter and I don't see any indication of DD Live or DTS Connect... so your SPDIF out will only put out 2 channel PCM for games and system sounds... -
Great, more stuff I need to buy. Thanks a lot for your input. It had been driving me crazy over the past couple days.
