Hi guys,
I have a lil problem. I reinstalled Windows MCE ( a clean install, without all the HP stuff) a couple of days ago. I got everything to start working again besides the built-in webcam. I tried reinstalling the drivers from HP's main site, but nothing works. I see an "unknown USB device" under Device manager, but every time I try to find the drivers or manually select the drivers nothing happens. It might be because the drivers that HP provides does not have an INF. I have tried everything I can think of, and now Im stumped. Can someone please help me with this one?
Note: I DID NOT make a copy of the C:\SWSetup folder before reformatting. I didn't think to do this. I just tried to reinstall all of the drivers instead from the HP website. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Update: The "Unknown USB Device" has disappeared, but still no webcam.

Another update: Unknown USB device is back. Could this be it? and if so, then why won't it install the drivers?

Not that it's much consolation but I am experiencing similar problems with my DV2166 (Ricoh web cam) running the HP XP preload at the moment.
The web cam stops workimg and disappears from the Device Manager Imaging Devices and then appears as an unknown USB device is the USB Controller device list. I have tried uninstalling reinstalling the device driver but no succes. I've raised the problem with CS but am still waiting for a proper 'non-scripted' response.
Anyone else seen this problem, got any ideas ??? -
I've just sorted the problem with the web cam on my DV2166. The problem is BIOS related. I had previously upgraded the BIOS to the latest level F22 in preparation of installing Vista (the latest BIOS level has Vista enhancements), tonight I reverted the BIOS back to previous level F13 and the web cam started working again! The web cam device is now listed properly as an Imaging Device and not as an unknow USB device.
One for HP I think.... -
I Had Same Problem On My Hp Dv2166eu Laptop, This Problem Came Once I Install Vista, I Found Out That To Install Vista I Had To Change Bios Version To F22. I Did Not Like The Vista So I Install The Xp Media Center Back & Got This Problems Since, I Fix The Problem By Changing The Bios Version To F13 And Installing Latest Webcam Driver (verson 1.1a). Both Software (driver Files) Can Be Download From Hp Website.
