I was just looking at HP's site and it seems that they only offer Vista Ultimate in a 64-bit version. Any thoughts on why?
-
so they can make more money. Last I remember they had home premium 64 bit also. Either way I'd still do a clean install.
-
I don't get how HP makes more money by selling the 64-bit Vista Ultimate instead of the 32-bit.
-
Cos people think it's better so they will pay more for it
-
But the price of 64-bit and 32-bit is the same.
-
versions (ultimate) cost more, architechures (32/64bit) cost the same.
-
Yeah, plus there is only the 64-bit option so its not about charging more for 64-bit. They offer Home Premium in both versions for the same price.

They're trying to cut down on the number of configurations to support. They have to create a different restore image for each one. By rights Microsoft should never have made the 32-bit versions, which would have forced vendors to get their software 64-bit ready pronto, but they wimped out.
Unless they give you a really good deal on Ultimate I'd just get 64-bit Home Premium. -

Actually, for the record, There is no Vista Ultimate 32 Bit. It's 64 bit only.
-
Yes there is
-
sorry, what i mean to say was, so people would buy Ultimate(more money) vs home premium.
-
Actually, contrary to most people who want to upgrade to 64-bit, I prefer 32-bit because it is more likely to support the cheap software and hardware you can buy here, plus Adobe's CS3 is only supported on 32-bit operating systems (you can run it on 64-bit but I'm not taking any chances).

Dell only sells laptops with 32 bit Vista. I know, I had one. It took a dump on me and I sent it back.
-
I am using Windows Vista Ultimate SP1 32-bit.

I wonder when Dell will even move to 64-bit. It's probably because they don't want to deal with all the support calls from customers wanting to know why some software won't work on their computer, or it could be that they just didn't invest the time in developing their drivers for 64-bit yet.
I'm using Ultimate 64-bit on my desktop and I haven't had any problems with it yet. The only thing that is annoying sometimes is the unsigned drivers block, but you can fix that by hitting F8 and selecting boot computer and allow installation of unsigned drivers. This is only on Vista 64-bit editions, so everybody with 32-bit don't worry about this. -
yes they only sell 32bit vista, you have to request for the 64bit discs if you want it.
they have made this official, though they noted that they are not responsible for any 64bit drivers, even though they do provide it on most of their models anyway
