You sure you've got 64 bit Vista?
If you are, it's probably being allocated to your GPU. What is the graphics chipset in your laptop?

    do the following -
    1) click the start button
    2) in the search bar, type in "dxdiag"
    3) on the second page it has the info of your video card, including how much RAM it has.
    4) also, right click "Computer" and select properties and double check you have 64-bit OS
    5) come back and post your video card and how much RAM it has

I have the hdx16 with 8Gb of ram. Under task manager mine says 8188 total but only 4290 free. Are you reading total or free?

    i have an hdx16t 64bit with t9400 2.53 GHz and a 9600m gt graphics card

    from dxdiag:
    Name:NVIDIA Geforce 9600m GT
    MANU:NVIDIA
    Chip Type: Geforce 9600m gt
    DAC Type: Integrated RAMDAC
    Approx. total Memory: 1776 MB

Im 100% it is 64 bit cuz thats why i see when i right click my computer. it also says 4Gb memory.

I think your NVIDIA GPU is grabbing a big chunk of main memory to augment its dedicated memory, which is virtually useless. Figure out where that's configured and stop it. Might be in the BIOS?

Personally id grab CPU-Z and see what its reporting on the memory. As th eabove post states cheack the bios. I dont think that a dedicated card would normally do any memory sharing especially with its own ram barley used but check the agp aperature in the bios anyways and turn it to its smallest, this is typically only for setting the starting video ram size on integrate chipsets like my last compaq.

A lot of GPUs are dynamically allocated memory anymore, and if you need the memory for something else, it will "give up" some of that memory. Trying to manually configure them is usually more trouble than its worth.
