Hi. I have an HDX 18t that I bought in December of I think 2008. For a long time now, it has been running quite hot. It Idles at 65*C which is obviously too much. It shuts off suddenly when I play games or convert video if I don't prop up the back and use a mini fan to blow air away from it. The room is about 75* F. It will quickly hit 100*C + when benchmarking or gaming which obviously triggers an emergency shutdown.

Anything I can do short of opening it up to replace the thermal paste to fix this? It is way to complicated for me to take apart. I just ordered a new DV6 QE tonight, so I won't spend any money on it to get it fixed professionally.

I wouldn't really care since I just bought my new PC, but I would like to pass this machine on to my Father since it is alot better than his Vista launch day era gateway POS.

have you ever removed the dust and crap that's possibly lodged in the fans and cooling system ?

It's recommended to do that every few months. Most laptops die of overheating because people let em get clogged with dust, crap and pet hair.
