Ok, so i downloaded all the bios, drivers etc for the ati card for my dv7 when i recieved it a week ago. I changed it to fixed graphics doing the whole f10 thing. It seemed to register on gpuz, even though on 3dmark tests it ran slow.
Anyway, i changed back to dynamic and just installed Left for dead 2, started it up and when i keep clicking "play now" it keeps saying it cant find my graphics card and keeps saying i have the Intel one. Left for dead 2 is not opengl as far as i know, it even says directx 9 on the back of the box.

I also noticed that when i changed it back to dynamic, the laptop was no where near as hot at the side (where the exhaust port is) as it was when i had it on fixed.

What am i doing wrong? Im still in my 21 days to send it back. I thought the issues were only that it wouldnt switch with opengl.

I might also add that i have the settings on "high performance".

Thank you for the help. I done as above and i already had it set to high performance, but i followed the steps incase i hadnt.

When i set to fixed left4dead2 detects my ati card, but when i change it back to dynamic it detects the intel card. Either way when i run the game it runs smooth. Surely it wouldnt run it smoothly if it really only detected the intel card? Could it possibly say it only detects the intel card, but when it plays the ati card kicks in?

Is it going to make the ati card "burn out" any quicker if i always have it on fixed?

In Dynamic mode, the ATI card won't show up since it routes the data it processes through the Intel IGP display. I have not gone back to dynamic since the BIOS. I just keep it on Intel IGP until I want to play a game or use Adobe CS. After, I switch back to Intel IGP.

Oh do do you mean keep it on fixed, but switch it in the ccc or configure graphics from high performance to power saving? I never thought of that, it was a pain having to keep changing it in the bios. I thought once it was on fixed it was always on until you went back to dynamic

Yeah, there's an option to change your graphic cards in CCC while in Fixed Mode. This will require you close any graphically intense programs but its only a minor annoyance for me. The benefit of controlling which graphics card was on was much more important to me.
