Hey guys, I'm having a rather strange problem on my dv6t that I received yesterday. My computer doesn't seem to be utilizing the 6770m card at all, and instead all graphics processing appears to be handled by the intel HD graphics device.
When I open up my Catalyst Control Center (11.5b), I can't find any specifications about my graphics card anywhere. Furthermore, the graphics driver I downloaded from HP doesn't seem to install the graphics driver at all, and the only way I managed to install the 6770m driver was via Windows Update. Even then, I don't think the graphics card is functioning properly because some of the most light gaming (Minecraft, etc.) shows unreasonable lagging.
Another thing I noticed was that when I right clicked Catalyst Control Center in the notifications, it only shows "1. Mobile Intel(R) HD Graphics", and it doesn't show the 6770m card as an option at all.

    Someone please help :(

EDIT: I forgot to mention - I did a fresh install of Windows 7 Home Premium, and this problem came after the reinstall. I do not know if this problem persisted before my install as I proceeded with it as soon as I got the laptop.

Did you check the device manager to see that the hardware is listed or not? It could be faulty, in which case, call HP and ask for an exchange/refund.

your graphics card isn't going to be usable unless you install the HP drivers. your hp driver install fail might be a problem with the fresh install that it's unable to recognize that it's actually compatible.

instead of doing the clean install, use the recovery discs you have (i hope you created them...) and do a minimal system recovery instead. it is a clean install but it also installs all the necessary driver for the computer to function properly. after that, if you still wanted to update the ATI driver, you can just install it OVER the stock driver (aka, not remove then install)

@teotuf, I knew that creating recovery discs is a good idea, so I tried it before I reinstalled Windows. Unfortunately, the second disc always got stuck at 100%, and I wasted three discs on it alone to no avail. Not being able to proceed, I decided that I would have to reinstall a fresh copy of Windows 7. Fortunately, I saved the SWsetup folder from the original installation, but I couldn't find the ATI graphics driver anywhere; do you happen to know where it is, by any chance?

@pber, Device Manager lists "AMD Radeon HD 6700M Series", but, as I mentioned before, the Catalyst Control Center doesn't seem to be detecting it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Update: I found someone else in this thread that also installed the new 11.5b hotfix, and like him my graphics card also shows up as 6700m. The difference, however, is that his performance went up while mines did not because my 6770m card doesn't seem to be utilized yet. Does anyone know how to enable the 6770m? I've only tested light games so far (will try GTA IV later today), so I don't know if this is really a problem yet. Will report back tonight!

I spent many hours with HP tech support last week because the DV6quad I received last week failed to switch to the Radeon. They couldn't fix it. I sent it back for refund. crazy thing is that I got another DV6quad 2-3 weeks prior, which had other issues, but no issues with switchable graphics. HP is unable to get a handle on this problem, at this time. Good luck!

Since my last post I've been looking around the forums seeking an answer to my problems, and it seems that I have found the solution. In the thread about "Switchable graphics", people are reporting that HP has changed the drivers on these machines recently so that manual switching of the graphics devices has been disabled, for reasons unknown. Instead, each application is assigned as "High performance" or "Power Saving" (Read: 6770m or Intel HD), and I need to manually configure EACH application in my computer to use one of the two. I tested GTA IV with each configuration, and sure enough the difference in performance was like night and day - "Power saving" lagged so badly at high settings that it simply became unplayable.

Indeed, you, dave, were mentioning precisely the dilemma I had as well! I'm thoroughly upset that HP has decided to disable the user's freedom to change graphics devices and relabel the new, encumbersome system as "Switchable graphics". What a joke :p.

@dave I was curious about your phone conversation with HP that you mentioned in the other thread. If you would be kind enough, can you possibly tell me if they even acknowledged this change, and if so whether or not they were possibly fixing it? As far as I can see this (hopefully) appears to be a software driver issue and not a hardware issue. I'm crossing my fingers on that, but if not then I might have to consider getting a replacement order.

Sorry for the long explanation

Well, HP proved that AMD has a long way to go to catch up with Nvidia in muxless technology.
(Once again, HP Download has quite a few missing drivers for the 61xx and posted severely outdated drivers as recently new...ugh)

I'm pretty sure you get your manual switch somewhere in the end of the year if AMD kept their promise with their release.

One of the techs (the least technical, and most useless) told me that the switching is now "automatic". that was my first call to HP for the graphics issues. Because he assured me it was "automatic" I foolishly installed (and activated) FSX (now on the second HP laptop) to see if what he said was correct. As we all now know, I was unable to get it to switch, as was the techs who researched the issue over the next few days and who spent HOURS dialed into my machine to try to fix the issue.
