Hi Guys,
Wanted to post my latest results for getting the 6850m 120Hz to work without giving me a black screen after installation. Took me a while but this will only get refined from here on out.
Please note: This is for the 6850m + 120Hz screen! The 6850m with the 60Hz screen already works with the leshcat drivers. (Still gives a black screen during setup but is fine after a restart)
Warning: You are doing this at your own risk. I am not responsible for people having to re-install their drivers if this goes south etc..
This install requires:
- HP AMD/Intel drivers. (found on the HP page)
- Leshcats latest drivers
- (external monitor - optional)
This has been tried on Windows 7. (It will most likely work for Windows 8 but more about this later)
Make sure you have a clean environment from previous drivers.
What I did to remove drivers:
- Uninstall from Programs
- amd_cleanup_util_1.2.1.0 from the official AMD site
- Uninstall & Delete from Device Manager
- Run driver_fusion_1.1.1 (my preferred version)
- Restart into Safe mode - Run Driver Fusion again
The goal is to make sure that Windows only has the VGA drivers installed for both devices.
Installation:
- Install HP driver package (I installed the bare minimum because you will upgrade later either way i.e. Intel + AMD + CCC)
- Restart
- Run leshcats package and pick Intel 2932 when asked. Let it extract.
- Install Leshcat 13.6 beta 2 drivers using the UPGRADE function (I installed the bare minimum again because my tests are conducted on a VHD. Note I didn't pick Intel Components during the install but it still updated them it seems - Not sure if it makes a difference at this point.
- During the install the screen WILL TURN BLACK but do not worry. It is still installing and you should not panic but let it finish. Use External VGA monitor if possible here to see if it finished. Else use a flash light and hold it up to your screen.
- Restart once finished. (Be certain that it has finished, the screen will still be black at this point)
After it has finished comes the crucial step.
The FeatureTestControl Values need to be set so that the screen starts up without a Black Screen.
You can do this on an external monitor or in safe mode.
- Start the Leshcat installer again and pick Brightness Resolver tool. Pick the generic FFFF setting for both cards.
- Apply
- Reboot
Disadvantages:
- No brightness controls on both cards -- yet (Until someone finds the right values)
- 2 packages are needed (I haven't found out what the HP package does differently to the latest Leshcat package / Or which reg keys it leaves behind that enable this)
Eventually someone will find the right FeatureTestControl values that enable brightness controls on both cards. Hopefully we can also find the differences between the HP package and the Leshcat package and consult with him for a fully working single package solution.
All help is appreciated.

Hello, thank you for the guide. I will try it later when I have time. Do you know what happens when you use the original FeatureTestControl (f840) from the hp drivers? I have an HP ENVY 17 3D 2XXX

Code:Frankenbuild # 1 HP (upgrade only) Leshcat 13.6.2 Results ------------------------------- Intel F940 (Brightness works halfway - Lowest is - off brightness) AMD F940 (Brightness doesn't work- Card works if switching from Intel but not on start up) Intel F840 (Brightness keys do not work at all but card shows AMD F840 (Not able to switch to AMD) Intel F944 (Brightness works halfway - Lowest is - off brightness) AMD F944 (Brightness doesn't work- Card works if switching from Intel but not on start up) ^^^^^^^^^^^^ Recheck F920 Intel (Brightness works halfway - Lowest is - off brightness) F920 AMD (Brightness doesn't work- Card works if switching from Intel but not on start up) F700 Intel (Brightness works halfway - Lowest is - off brightness) F700 AMD (Brightness control doesn't work but (full brightness) F800 Intel (Brightness works halfway - Lowest is - off brightness) F700 AMD (Brightness doesn't work- Card works if switching from Intel but not on start up) FFFF Intel Full Brightness (No control) FFFF AMD Full Brightness (No control) starts up fine
What I do remember is that I "think" I got the AMD card to boot with brightness under either F840 / F940 / F944. and with control being available for the Intel.
The thinking part relates to me not being sure if it was a fluke boot or not (such thing shouldn't exist btw).
Which brings me to a new theory that the following reg entry should be changes after driver install.
Leshcat or one of the Intel packages on the Catalyst has lowered the DelayedDetectionForDP to 500 . The original HP drivers state 1000.
So maybe because of a delayed booting process (busy CPU) the AMD card "managed" to pass on a F8xx value etc.
Trial and error until this works out!
