6910P memory options.

My current 6910P has 2gb of memory. I flipped over the notebook and popped off hte bottom cover and there is no memory stick there. Are there other places the memory mounts? And does this mean I can add more to it? I was under the impression I had 2 x 1gb sticks of ram. Is the bottom slot a third slot? Thanks for any info.

 

no....i believe that the compaq 6910p has only 2 slots....downlad cpuz and check how many slots are there and what is the spec of the current ram....i think u can max it out at 2x2GB PC2-6400 for sure....
My d630 has the ram slots in the weirdest of places so u might have to look for it by removing the keyboard maybe....

You have a 1x2GB stick of RAM installed underneath the keyboard. The spare slot can accomodate another stick of RAM. There are only 2 slots.

 

Yup, You guys are right. I found one stick under the keyboard.

Where can I get a 2nd stick? Would the 6400 kit mentioned above be better and would this even take use of the extra memory speed?

You can get a 2nd stick anywhere online. Check the RAM deals thread.
The PC6400 kits make no difference as the 965 chipset will limit the bandwidth to 667MHz. Just get the cheapest 2GB RAM you can find. They are mostly compatible.

 

just run a system scan on crucial.com or memoryx.com and buy the ram with the same spec from anywhere....to check the max ram supported by the chipset....download pc wizard 2008 from cpuid.com and it wud tell u the max ram frequency support....

 

if u ever overclock ur motherboard to a fsb speed of 800mhz then the ram wud function at 800mhz too....done it with the d630....!!

 

Ok, I had planned on getting the same stick from HP if possible to make sure the Dual Channel mode works with no problems. Having a hard time finding the one I have for sale.

 

Would this work ok with Dual channel mode? The site does mention to try and run matchign pairs but the HP stick is hard to find.

You don't need an HP stick to get dual channel support. As long as they are matching pairs, it will do. Notebook RAM isn't as fickle as desktop ones.

HP aftermarket RAM are just Kingston rebrands, at a 20% price premium for the privilege of the HP sticker (the stickers are very exclusive).

That Corsair RAM is a good RAM.

 

yeah corsair's good....i use it as well....although the PC2-6400 is really sweet when it comes to overclocking and can be easily throttled within the range of 400-800mhz....if u r not into overclocking and stuff....go for the pc2-5300 since it ll serve ur purpose and will be a few bucks cheaper than the former....

 

Is there much performance gain when running dual channel mode?

 

I've never seen any.

 

dual channel mode just gives the memory controller more bandwidth. It equates to 3-4% more performance from what i remember, which is unnoticable.
