Has anyone gone out and tried a 7200rpm hard drive in some of the newer HP laptops? If so, was there noticeable performance or just a placebo effect?
The 5400 in my laptop now scores a 5.4 in the Vista Experiance thingy, which isnt too shabby. However, that test is also probably not really dependable. Heck, we dont even know what exactly it is measuring. But does anyone have a score from a 7200rpm drive to share? Or better yet, some throughput tests on before and afters?

you should take a look into the hardware and aftermarket section. there you will see various threads concerning the different drives benchmarks.
and btw. you will definetly see a big improvement. your laptop might feel totally different from how you experience it now with the 5400rpm drive.
and yes the wei stuff pretty much lacks reliabilty. -
I think they're way better too!
So much so I'm named after one LOL! -
Yes, I think you will notice a differance. I installed a Hitachi 200GB HDD in the laptop listed below and I notice a positive change. I'm not big on benchmarking or WEI scores and if it is a placebo effect, I don't care, it works good for me.

My dv2700t came with a Samsung SpinPoint HM250JI, which looks to stack up pretty favorably against the 7200rpm hdd's according to these benchmarks:

I had thought about getting a Hitachi Travelstar 7K200, but if these benchmarks are accurate, I don't think I'd get that much of a performance boost. You can check to see what hdd got shipped in your machine and decide whether it's worth the cost. -
My HDX is coming in soon and I have dual 120 gigs in it. Both are 7200 rpm. I'll let you know my performance scores when my notebook gets here.

I have the Hitachi 7200RPM 200GB hard drive. and my boot times are significantly faster. Files transfer much faster. all in all, it's a faster HD, though I do think it gets a bit hotter. but not much.
-
Be careful with Seagate 7200 though. It becomes very "turboish" in sound in 4-5 months since new. I have Upgraded my laptop but I have to send it back for replacement or repair for it's noise.

I have installed two 7200 rpm hdds on my dv9500t along with 4gb ram.
Noticible difference. Boot time cut in half as well as overall faster performance. If you can afford it, you'll like the improvements. -
I just installed the Hitachi 200GB 7200RPM drive as well in my DV6130. I noticed faster overall performance... however, the noise is greatly increased. Most of the reviews on Newegg said this drive was quiet - but I find that to not be the case. The 7200 RPM drive is VERY loud in my DV6130. Much louder than the stock Seagate Momentus 5400rpm, which was virtually inaudible most of the time. This thing is loud all the time (very loud ambient spin sound + the typical read/write sounds).
I wanted the 7200rpm for digital video, photo, and music editing... plus the extra storage is always nice. But if I had known that it would was going to be so noisy I would have opted for one of the larger capacity 5400rpm drives instead... oh well. Too late now! I don't have any heat issues as some have mentioned above... and my battery seems to last just as long as it did before (which isn't very long... 6-cell on full charge gets about 2.5 hours). The drive is perfect except for the noise. Anyway, that's my 2-cents regarding the 7200rpm drive in a DV6000. -
My HP dv 9700t has a score of 5.2 for a dual HDD ( 2x120 at 7200rpm)
My Vaio FZ 4000 has a score of.........................5.9 for a 200 HDD at 7200rpm but with less loaded programs.
Both laptops have Nvidia graphics card. Score for the HP is 4.8.
Score for the Sony is....................5.2.
Thank you HP. -
Yes, it's true...Somehow SONY has better score in Vista in all the aspects. Why? Is HP making the system slow by architecture?
-
Higher capacity (which means higher density) HDs tend to be faster. Who's the manufacturer of HP's drive?

Installed my Seagate ST9200420AS 7200rpm 200gb in my new dv2700t se...get all kinds of issues..trying to install large programs hdd activity light goes solid and the machine locks except for the cursor. Moving large files from 8gb thumb drive to disk and it does the same thing. Drive worked fine in a dv6700t...I'm beginning to think it's something to do with this particular 2000 series since it runs like a champ with any 5400rpm drive installed.
