I'm curious how many people have an 8000z and think too much heat is being generated. It bothers me to put it on my lap. I do have a 7200 RPM hard drive.

I'm thinking of getting a 9000z but don't want a heat repeat. If the heat is from the processor, I might jump ship to a Intel processor.

Any laptop is gonna get hot on the bottom if it, thats where all the components are. This is because every one is jamming as much power as they can in the little chassis of laptops. So unless u get an ultraportable with a ulv processor, integrated graphics and a 4200rpm hd dont expect the bottom of it to stay completely cool no matter what cpu u get, be it intel or amd or whomever.

I would say the newer Intel chips run hotter than the AMD Turion line.

But I would still recommend returning your dv8000z. It has the ATI Xpress 200M. Which means it likely has the same SB400 southbridge chip that my system (dv5030us) has. Which means you'll experience the same USB 2.0 speed (or lack thereof) problems I'm experiencing. And the same customer service hell I have been dealing with for a month and a half trying to get the system replaced.

I say send it back and make sure they know you're returning it for heat issues and the Xpress 200M's well documented problems.

If the heat is along the front of the notebook where the HDs are... well, there y'go. You could try upgrading to 2GB RAM and shutting down virtual memory to reduce HD access.

You can try undervolting the CPU but I wouldn't expect a dramatic difference.

The dv9000z has a 7600 GPU so I'd expect it to run hotter on account of that.

Make sure you're not blocking the fan intake vent when you sit your dv8000z on your lap.
