Hey everyone I was wondering if the Nvidia 8400m GS 128mb is gddr3 or gddr2. A friend of mine got the hp dv2500t with an nvidia 8400m gs 64MB and he said his was gddr3 as opposed to mine which is the same card just with 128mb ram. If someone can shed some light onto this I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks. One more thing I've just got the new dv6700t SE with the same card just 256mb ram vs 128, Is there a visible boost with this extra vram? and is it gddr3. Sorry for asking so many questions. THANKS AGAIN!

I don't really know how to tell what kind you have in particular, but I DO know that it could either be GDDR2, GDDR3 or just DDR2. Each manufacturer is going to use different technologies. There is no standard for the GeForce 8M series.

And Plus, the difference between 128 and 256 isn't significant (I don't think, iunno, I might be wrong). You will only really notice a difference when you change the GPU itself. The 8400M series is low end, the 8600 is mid range, the 8700 and 8800 are high end. If you jump between each one (GS/GT) you will notice a difference each time (eg 8600M GS compared to 8600M GT, there's a noticeable difference, same with 8400M GS to 8400M GT), memory doesn't really matter a whole lot, but others please correct me if I am wrong.

Thanks a ton. I spoke to my friend who has the 8400m gs 64mb and his is GDDR3. I downloaded a program called GPU-Z and it told me i have DDR2 which is kinda weird. anyway I looked around a bit, and found that the 8400m gs found in hp laptops(I don't know about other company's) are randomized. meaning whether its GDDR3 or DDR2. I guess I just got unlucky. A good idea for potential buyers. right before you buy the laptop, ask the hp CS if it's gddr3 or ddr2 and when they don't know( like always), and it gets shipped out, and later you find out it's ddr2. tell them you want it re-shiped because you were promised a vid card with gddr3, just a thought!

LOL good idea!

I'm gonna post a screenshot of mine, do you mind doing the same? You get higher WEI scores (although I know WEI is crap) so I wouldn't worry too much about it.

we have gone through this before:

Yours should be running a 800mhz shader too -
I realized that the DV2500 and the DV2700 both have GDDR3 while the DV6500 and the DV6700 have the DDR2 memory, I've gone through several 6700 models and all of them have DDR2 while a friend of mine has gone through several 2700 models and all of them were GDDR3.
In short, if your getting a 6500/6700 series model, it will most likely be DDR2. If you buy a 2500/2700 laptop it will most likely have the new GDDR3 in it.Attached Files:
