So i read this guide on how to soft mod an 8400m gs to an 8600m gs. Anyways.... in riva tuner there is an option to basically unlock and change the id of your card so it then have 8 ROP's then you have 128bit memory. Well i didnt follow the guide exactly as it stated well now i have 12ROPS and a 192 bit bus width. Anyways if you want to know how i can tell you by the way heres the screen shot. Also iv yet to do testing other then in world of warcraft and i got about 10 fps more it seems like but that game berly counts in my book.![]()

i dont know how my screen shot ended up in the middle of the sentence oops lol
-
128 Unified Shaders?! Jeez... wonder what your temps are...
-
58C idle is pretty high. My 8800m idles at around 43C.
Still, I don't think it's too smart of an idea. And come on, 128 Unified Shaders? That's double the 8800m GTS. You should run some benchmarks to show the improvement. (I.E. 3DMark06, etc.) -
yeah but with this crap internet i have 3dmark06 will take to long to download although i might have vantage on my desktop that hasent ran in months id have to look. Again im not sure if theas readings are even correct i know it at least has 8600m gs specs because there the same cores. Oh with this process i modded an nvidia go 420 into a go 460 in another zv5000 i have for fun lol.
-
No, the unified shaders are not correct. Everything else... I guess.
Never seen a mobile GPU run at 192bit bus though. -
How many shaders do you think i have?
-
8-16, depending on if the soft-mod worked. You sure this soft-mod didn't just make the reading appear as though it's an 8600m GS. It's just hard to believe it magically turns the 8400m GS to an 8600m GS.
-
i used the windows rating thing and only went up 1 point in vista aero to 3.5 and 4 points in gaming to 4.6
-
i had 16 shaders before. i took a screen shot but stored it in windows i didnt upload it my bad lol the diffrences before i had 64 bit 16 shaders 3.2texels/s and 4ROP's.
-
im not sure if its just appearing to be a better card but i did force install 8600m gs drivers onto the card my gpu-z screen shot from before i did the soft mod reads it as an 8600m gs with a 64 bit. But after i did the mod it reads it as this. Also riva tuner actualy says its 320bit LOL but it dosent have that high of a bit width i gusse so it maxes out at 192bit
-
It doesn't have 192bit bus. A card cannot just magically boost the bit-rate, especially past the highest bit-rate possible for that core. (G84) And the 8600m GS only has 16 US's.
This mod is either just making your GPU appear as something it isn't. (99% sure)
Or is going to turn your notebook into a smoldering piece of plastic. (1% sure) -
lol honestly i dont belive it either i only belive the one thing that had a description that i checked in riva tuner which is a raster unit 1. it has 2 raster units one is enabled and thats 4 ROP's the other is disabled and if you click it you get another 4ROP's i honestly belive that because its based off of the g86 ( its actualy a g86 the G84 is the 8600m gt ) which the max card has a 128bit bus which makes sence i belive the rest is nonsence i was trying to hard to get it to work i checked ever single box and tada it worked i was so pleased ill uncheck the rest and report in a few minutes.

Wait, what did you do to your 8400M GS? You modded an 8600M GS to fit in with it? What...?
-
My mistake, I thought the 8400m GS was the G84 core.
-
I thought so to itd make more sence but the high end is G80 so im gussing their mentality is the smaller the close the number is to their top end card the better. Anyways.... http://gpuz.techpowerup.com/08/07/24/7fw.png revised more realist screen shot with the only thing i think should be checked actualy checked
-
my bad this is much better... lol
-
example of an 8400m gs
-
I still don't see how it just "transforms" the 8400m GS, and opens it's bus to 128bit. If this actually shows significant improvements, I'm guessing all the 8400m GS users will jump all over this.

That's a really nice mod... until your laptop breaks. I wonder what someone could push an 8800M GTX to.
-
I dont really think you could push an 8800gtx to anything more on that card everthing is unlocked because you payed about $200 for it. on the other hand my 8400m gs is a cut down version of an 8600m gs.
-
Ugh... now i feel stupid. In my efforts to see if i was getting more preformance i took my g86 core desktop and disabled one of the ROP's making it basically an 8400 gs ( its an 8500 gt ) anyways now it dosent boot and gives me all sorts of graphical errors and i cant change it in safe mode.... so now ill have to reformatt.
-
I'm going to watch this and hopefully if it shows a true benefit, do it on my XPS M1330 (LOL JUST LOWERED TEMPS LETS RAISE THEM NOW!)
-
-
Yes, they are. But luckily I've developed a cure of sorts (link in sig) so I'm a lot less worried.
-
Any update, Tippy, or is it gone for good?
-
Would you kindly post a link to the mod please?
-
I wouldn't expect a response anytime soon. He is probably at that stage of explaining to his parents why his new laptop is emitting smoke...
-
He didn't destroy his laptop, he destroyed his desktop by trying to soft mod his desktop 8500GT to an 8400GS. And since it's a softmod, all he has to do is reformat.
-
What kind of a soft mod is this? Does this mean I can make my ancient Go 7600 run at the speed of a Go 7600 GT?
