Got mine about a week ago. Love it
Apparently something to do with Core i7 production slowed down shipment and all. But the 8440 series is definitely underrated and under-talked about here at NBR.

My 8440p shipped yesterday, should be here this week, fingers crossed!

I think it looks great in many ways, but I wonder if it's too big to be considered a true thin and light...is it too big? -
It is a bit on the heavy size but I do come from a 3 pound 12"... but it is heavy.
Not so much thin either... so no I wouldn't say it's a true thin and light but it does pack incredible power in a fairly small package. It's still fairly small, mind you, don't let my comments scare you. I carry it around campus in a backpack everyday and it's very much doable and compact. -
a size comparison pic from this japanese website (I'm so getting out of my way to find you this

I just recieved my 8440w. Quick impressions - it's fast (I have the i7-620), reasonably lightweight, has awesome build quality (I've had EliteBooks and Thinkpads before), and has a great keyboard. On the other hand, the screen is even worse than my Thinkpads (something that should be impossible) due to terrible vertical viewing angles, and the touchstyk / nipple buttons sometimes lose their click (like when scrolling down pages). Overall, I can live with the minor issues; it should be an awesome computer for the next year or so.

I have to agree with you on the screen thing. HP definitely needs to pick up the slack for their HP business line screens. They prove they have supply of nice screens with the ENVY line. We pay basically just as much if not more, why shouldn't we get nice screens as well?
Although, I do love the screen resolution and if you don't compare it to anything else, it is passable... but it would be awesome if we didn't have to compromise. -
This is just not acceptable. The 8440w is literally the only 14" quad core offered machine on the market and the screen should be top notch, especially for the freaking asking price.
Anyone have the 1600x900 screen? I am interested in the i7-720m or i7-820m with the 1600x900 screen but I'm guessing I'd be first.
Not sure I want to be in that position.
-
I have the 1600x900 screen but not with the i7-720M, I have the i7-620M.
I'm pretty sure the screens are the same on all models of 8440w/p though...
The screen isn't terrible... don't get me wrong. It's just, it doesn't blow you away and the vertical viewing angles aren't so great. But it's perfectly fine, you don't notice it in day to day usage. Only when comparing to higher quality screens like on the MBPs, RGBLED or desktop screens. -
How long takes your new baby fly to you? I ordered 8740w on 15th and waiting for ship out
-
After using the computer for the past few weeks, the screen does grow on you. I don't notice it anywhere near as much, though the quality doesn't blow me away. I have the 1600x900 screen with a i7-620.

8440W owners, please tell us if the 9-cell battery sticks out the back.
-
Exactly... the screen isn't actually that bad and the 1600x900 resolution more than makes up for it.
I have the 9 cell and it does stick out the back. Get the 6 cell if you want it flush. -
I confirm dap_pad's info, the 9 cell does stick out the back by about 1,5cm.

FWIW the Dell Studio 14 has a Core i7-720/820 option and 1080p WLED screen ($75 upgrade). I think their WLED 1080p screens are as good as any in market, short of their own RGBLED's, HP's "DreamScreen," and a few others I can't recall right now. The Dell consumer line Core i7's are notorious for heat problems, and the 14" form factor can only make things worse. Still, Google it and see if there are problems galore. You can always try it and return for no restocking fee, especially if you have heat problems. -

Sorry to post twice in a row, but just noticed this review from notebookcheck.net. http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-HP-EliteBook-8440p-WJ681AW-Notebook.29506.0.html Best rating they have EVER given a product, and they review about 15/month. Sounds like a winner.

LOL posted that review in the 8440p forums, but definitely, 92% is damn impressive. I wished they had reviewed the FN093UT 8440w model, it would've solved the "cons" of the screen a bit and get better benchmark numbers. Nevertheless, great review and great laptop
Loving my 8440w!

Here's my fundamental issue with the 8440 series. Who thought a 16:9 screen was in any way useful for business applications? The Dell E6410 and Lenovo T410 are both 16:10, as was the Elitebook 6930p. I'm not going to be watching HD movies on my notebook; that's why I have a big screen TV. I really want to like the 8440s but I can't stand losing any more vertical screen space that I already do with 16:10. I'm using a 14.1" SXGA+ screen right now and I can't think of a better size/layout, but I'm never going to get that again due to cost cutting measures so I'll have to stick with WXGA+ while I still can. Seriously, if I could jam an i7 chip and ATI Radeon HD 3450 into my Compaq Evo N620c I would. Widescreen = useless for most productivity apps.

You're not losing anything. The 8440p/w have a max resolution of 1600x900, so you're just gaining 160 pixels horizontal resolution over the normal 1440x900 16:10 screen on T410 etc. while still having the exact same vertical resolution.
That's 160x900 = 144000 pixels more than WXGA+ or similar. -
You are losing physical vertical space. The diagonal on a 16:10 screen is 14.1", while it's 14.0" on the 16:9 screen. Since the screen is wider now, it must also be shorter. Which means a loss of physical screen space which is never a good thing. 16:9 is just a cost cutting measure and the result of consumers being swayed by the letters "HD" on the junk they buy at Best Buy and Staples.
8440w shipping yet?
