    Hey guys:
My 8510W just arrived, and finally arrived at the desktop after taking a while to create it's recovery partition, do the vista benchmark, etc. These are my first impressions of it, as I go along.

The trackpoint is ok. However, mine was loose, and thus popped up when I started using it hard. Not difficult to reseat, but annoying.

The CPU fan is running pretty much constantly, with my t7500 processor. I'll report back on how loud it gets when I benchmark it.

The 1920x1200 screen is crazy. I can have EVERYTHING on it at once it seems. Text is small (duh), but I'm young, so I think I can cope.

From my light use, the keyboard has no detectable flex, which makes me happy.

The Windows Experience Index is at 4.7...with a Gaming Performance of 5.5 (!!!)

Norton Internet Security trial is installed, but easily blown away. There is minimal bloat otherwise (Google toolbar, WWAN Setup, Roxio Creator, PDF Complete).

I'm currently installing 3dMark 03, 05, and 06, since I'm sure that we ALL are wondering what the 570m card can do. I'll post back with these scores, as well as the report from Everest Ultimate.

The more I use the keyboard, the more I like it. It's got nice feedback to me, and no flex that I can feel.

Photos will be forthcoming once I get the benchmarking done.

Awesome, I can't wait for the pictures!

I wonder how the Quadro handles games. Really wish the 8510p was out so we could get some comparisons of the Nvidia card against the HD 2600.

3710 3dMarks while in Vista Business.
Not bad, considering my dedicated gaming rig with an Opteron 2.4ghz, and an ATi X1950Pro scored only 4866.
Although the MBP with it's 2.4ghz processor, and 8600GT M scored better still.

Well, the speakers aren't too hot, but this IS a laptop, and they are also front firing...

Now just to fiddle with it more.

My one quibble so far is that it seems as if the display is unevenly lit, as in the right side appears dimmer than the left. I'm still scratching my head as to WHY...but...if I can't get over that...well...you all know how it goes.

The basic idea is just to download a driver that isn't locked into one specific mode, like HP's are. If you have Vista 32-bit, follow these instructions. I believe the driver version you'll want is 165.01

The display has such a brightness because backlight can be also side-mounted.
Could you please post the detail of monitor/display section from Everest? I can tell you which panel you have in the laptop.

Btw., the drive that's in there is currently one of the fastest available - 7200rpm with Perpendicular Magnetic Recording (PMR).

I hope I'll get such in my laptop (the only one who offers 2,5" 120GB/7200rpm WITHOUT PMR is Fujitsu; Hitachi and Seagate offer this capacity only with PMR)...

    That's enough.

It is a Samsung panel, model LTN154U2-L07 (some pretty new revision, google has L05 as the latest one). It is not even listed on the website, only LTN154U1 is shown there.

I'd say that the problem with the brightness is caused by the backlight; I can also see such difference on my ASUS (that will be replaced by 8510w). If it is too different, contact the service center.

My issue was not that the backlight was uneven (that's livable). My issue was that there is a blotch on the screen that is darker than the rest. I've already gotten ahold of HP, and they are working on getting a replacement out to me. The issue is that this is such a new rig they have NONE available, not even in the up-spec'ed models.

I brought it with me to work, and the wireless on it is working quite nicely, as I can get a signal on a network that I normally can't.

thanks jeeves appreciate your efforts in this. I remember reading somewhere when doing researches that hp screens are generally mediocre but that could only be one person's comment.

How about heat? Does it get too hot?

Am extremely interested in the 570m comparison with other cards. Can't wait til they release the 8510w in my country. The sales rep over the phone said it will only be available aug 3rd even though it's already listed on the website. I tend to take their words with a pinch of salt though.

Now I all need is someone to get their hands on a dell m4300 and do some comparisons. :p

Heat wise isn't too bad. Even under full benchmarking, it doesn't get too warm to be uncomfortable, at least to me.

I agree that HP screens suck, at least if this is any representation. However, mine could be a fluke. As such, we'll see what HP can do for me as far as getting this unit replaced. Issue is, there are NO more 8510W or 8710W models of ANY SKU available. They all shipped the day they hit warehouse, and as of right now, there is no ETA when more are due back. They should be getting up with me tomorrow to let me know what their proposed fix is.

No, it doesn't look too shabby at all. I'd be curious as to seeing what the card in the 8710W could do, seeing as how it's a Quadro 1600M.

The other benchmark you wanted run is transfering over my network to the laptop as we speak to be installed.

Ok, I'll keep an eye on it. I hope my 8510w will be OK... (they are currently producing models for Europe so I should have one in 2-3 weeks if everything goes fine).

Btw., ETA for these models is 2-4 weeks from date of ordering in HP Backoffice.

Palta: The laptop is level, so it's a constant height.

I hope that I'm not put TOO far out for a replacement. If I am, I might just have to RMA this and get something different. I HAVE to have it for classes that start August 1.

Just for the record, this experience has turned into a complete and total Charlie Foxtrot (look it up).

It turns out that my rep ordered the WRONG warranty for my unit. This means that now, I have to have my order for that warranty canceled, credited, and THEN, call to another department to order the correct warranty. Needless to say, this has started to turn into a comedy of errors, on HP's part....unfortunately, I'm not laughing.

If you could provide me with your serial number and part number, I could find out which warranty you have (if you want of course; you can use private message for that).

I am already used that HP has a mess in warranty ordering; I NEVER got correct CarePack warranty in last 12 months (I have ordered 6 Carepacks in this period), so for me it's just a routine...

I've gotten it taken care of now, thankfully. It's just me spending another 30 min on the phone for a brand new laptop that is the annoyance. I've had it less than a full day, and have already been on the phone several hours between this and the monitor issue.

    *sigh*

Thank you for the offer though. I wish I had your expertise in this when I was ordering originally.

They will exchange you current laptop for another one? Interesting...

Concerning warranties, it took two days to two weeks to get correct warranty for those laptops (all of them nc8430 except for one nx9420)... But I'm used and as far as I know (and service guys who repair many brands told me), HP is one of those better in Central Europe...

Btw., nc8430 I got for my brother went to the service center directly from the warehouse - battery connector was broken... And currently I try to arrange money return for it as it was broken 3 times (and interestingly enough, 4 other nc8430s are working perfectly without any flaw)...

This is what they have said to me. However, I'm waiting on the call back from HP corporate (not the tech), to confirm this.

I suppose I could look on the bright side, and be thankful I wasn't in your brother's position. I'll post up and let you know what HP says when they call.

HDTune or HDTach (one of them doesn't run on Windows). Its for the HDD so laptop shouldn't be used during benchmarking to achieve realistic results.

Exactly :) However, could you please try it once again? Burst rate is too low compared to other drives in this segment...

    C:
After re-running HDTune, I'm now getting a burst rate of 53.6 mb/sec. This is after a fresh reboot as well. I have no clue what is up with that, but if you have some suggestions, please do fire away.

Hm... Maybe it might be Vista with its indexing service that runs even during the test... Could you turn it off? (unfortunately I don't know how to do that, but google might be helpful in this case)

I can help with that. Type 'services' in the search bar of the start up menu and press enter.
Find 'Windows Search' (down at the bottom) of the services window, right click and press stop. That disables indexing.

I know what you mean but if you're using stuff mostly on windows then it's not worth getting a mbp. Plus mbp doesn't come with a docking station. :( Still a very nice laptop though.

The HP didn't COME with a docking station either. It's another chunk of cash you have to lay out.

But you have the CHOICE of a docking station, which I throughly appreciate.

Besides if your laying out for an ISV certified monster notebook, whats another bill or two for a docking station?

Regarding PICs, from what it looks like on HP's site the systems looks *very* similar to the previous generation systems (nc8430, etc.). So looking at the previous reviews for that system should get you about 95% there. I'm guessing it may just be the ports on the backside that differs.

Well, the benchmarking will have to wait. This unit is going back due to the backlight. The replacement will be here soon, so I'll post back then when I get it. Not going to say any more about this one, as HP's response on the matter has been MORE than exemplary.

Could you post those Everest reports (HDD, ODD and monitor) also from the replacement part? Just to see if they are used to change suppliers for one batch of same P/N.

    t1mmer:
T61p is useless for me because of the display (how can somebody not center the panel  )

C: The 15.4" (t61p and t61) is centered, the 14.1" (only t61) is off centered.
