I just received my new custom configured 8510p with WXGA (1200x800) resolution, and it's unacceptably grainy, and the colors are all washed out looking, it's a real mess.
A forum member suspected that I had a Samsung display in my notebook, which are notorious now for their sub par, grainy, and washed out looking screens.
Well, I ran PC Wizard, and guess what? It is a Samsung screen!![]()
I called HP today, and they were very cool about it. They are willing to cross ship me a new replacement notebook within 72-48 hours. The thing is, I need to know that they aren't going to send me another crappy Samsung screen, or it will be a big waste of both of our time, and their resources.![]()

Any updates on this? Im thinking about purchasing a WXGA 8510P as well, only mine isn't customised, it's just a cheap pre-configured model.
some before and after pictures would be good. -
Yes, as of today I've been informed that my replacement 8510p should be arriving tomorrow!
I'm not sure if the difference will show up on a picture, but I'll try it for you. Hopefully there will be a nice difference! -
hey scoober was your samsung screen that bad? im planning on returning my laptop, my quanta is grainer as well, but i hope they dont give me a samsung especially if its going to be more grainy
-
cool. Cant wait.
-
Well, it's like grainy sand speckles. Almost like a fine screen mesh, and the colors are somewhat washed out.
-
hey scooby any word on your new laptop? i hope its good news
-
Nope, still haven't received it yet. I think it will arrive on Monday. I'll be sure and post as soon as I get it and check it out.

So here we are, over two weeks after my support contact with HP began, and I just today received my replacement, and guess what? It has a Samsung screen even grainier than the first!
It looks like the uneven screen coating is the culprit with these screens; oh well...
Between this screen issue, and finding the GPU to not be Linux friendly in it's driver support, it's time for me to move on to something else, and that something else is looking like a Dell XPS 1530 with an NVIDIA GPU. -
im so sorry to here that scooby, did you ask to replace it or repair it. maybe you should of stated you absolutely dont want a samsung. anyways goodluck on your new dell. that would have been my first choice as well if only i heard about it sooner, i dont want to have to pay 15% stocking fee plus extra dollars to get the xps, although it is a very good buy. i guess i wont be seeing you aroung the hp forum huh? ironically i use to have a inspiron 1420 before this, heh.

I did specifically ask that I not receive a Samsung screen, and the HP rep even told me that it would not be, but alas, it was, and worse than the first, so I'm done with it.

I ran PC Wizard out of curiousity and my monitor was just ID'd as generic. It did not ID it as Samsung or any other model. Any ideas? Aside from my other problems, the monitor picture on my machine is sweet.
Side note - Funny, after running PC Wizard the computer now "see's" my ATI graphics card. Really odd. -

Further confirmation of the crap Samsung screen. Not only is it grainy, which appears to be the result of the screen coating being applied unevenly, and the colors washed out, but the text is nearly unreadable at smaller point sizes. This is a very poor quality screen.
-
Ah that sucks
Post back here when you get your XPS 1530 and let us know how it is!
-
Will do. I think I will wait for Penryn, and maybe an LED screen.

Well, this has definitely been a learning experience, and that's worth something either way.
