I’m leaning toward a Fujitsu 6120 right now but I’m trying to explore other options too, because I’m not fond of the fact that once I configure my computer with a 450nit screen I’m stuck without return options.

I've been really impressed with the dv6700 series screens I've seen in stores. I read on this site that the screen on the dv6700 is an LG/Philips screen. True? I just don't think I can ever bring myself to buy a consumer level HP product.. it's been hard enough to make myself even take a second glance at HP at all. If it weren’t for these screens catching my eye, I certainly wouldn’t be now. However, I've heard good things about the 8510p. I know it's built a lot better and comes with what seems like a nice extended warranty, so I'm hoping that means reliability will be better too. I'm wondering if LG/Philips makes the wxga screen for this model like it does the wxga screen in the dv6700? I know the screens won't be identical because the dv6700 is glossy and this HP is matte, correct? Thing is I’ve heard the LG screen on this notebook has light leakage problems and the QDS is the one that is the best..How hard is it to get HP to come and swap screens? Anyone know how they look compared to Fujitsu..?

    Thanks in advance!

The QDS WSXGA screens are the best on the current batch of 8510p/w notebooks.

I know of one guy on NBR who bought the 8510p with matte WXGA but that's it. Not sure who it was though, sorry. I do know though that the only 8510p screen complaints I've ever seen were about WSXGA+ and Samsung or something, so...

I've got QDS, and it seems most other people do too. Matte isn't as "brilliant" or whatever as glossy, but I prefer it for the no reflections. I doubt a matte WXGA would look as good as a glossy WXGA though, so keep that in mind

    Me?

Anyway, I have a WXGA on my 8510p. I haven't noticed any problems with it at all and I use my laptop often. As Ackeron already pointed out, glossy screens typically look "better" with more vibrant colors that pop. The problem is that they are reflective so they aren't good if light is directly hitting the screen. However, I prefer matte screens which do not reflect light that well. I'm not sure how the 8510p stands up to the Fujitsu, but it is probably one of the best matte screens I've seen. It's also plenty bright. I can't have it on it's max setting. HP will probably not switch out screens unless there's something actually wrong with it (too many dead pixels, won't turn on, etc). They won't switch it out because you want a different brand. You could say you want another laptop due to some defect, but you're just gambling on getting a different screen. I have an AU Optronics screen.

I bought the 8510p with a WXGA screen. The standard screen for the 8510p is WSXGA+, which was too high res for me, so I custom ordered one with WXGA.

The first unit I received had a Samsung screen that was very grainy, and the colors looked washed out. I exchanged it for another one that was supposed to have a different screen, but unfortunately the new one had the Samsung screen as well, and was even worse than the first.

I just returned the second one and got a refund, no 8510p for me.

From what I've read on this forum, and from my own experience I'd say stay away from Samsung screens. If you're going to order an 8510p, stick with the standard res, that way I think you won't end up with a bad Samsung screen.

Hey jin, when did you buy your 8510p? I'm assuming that you ordered it custom from HP to get the WXGA res, is that right? If so, you really lucked out by not getting a Samsung screen.

I ordered it right when they came out. There were a couple others that did the same and got WXGA, but they don't post here anymore. From what I've seen Samsung screens are bad all around, not just for HP. It's kind of weird considering that they make really good TVs. I'd think the technology would carry over.

I'm not sure if they've changed this with the newer 8510 series, but if you're considering the WUXGA option, the screen is likely going to be pretty dim. The WUXGA screen on my nw8440 (the predecessor to the 8510w) is rather dim with cold, washed-out colors, along with some minor "vignetting" near the corners of the screen. This is with every WUXGA nw8440 I've seen, too (we all have the same laptop at the college I go to). BTW my screen is an SEC screen.

Greg's review of the 8510w with the WUXGA (SEC) screen also seems to mention the same things about that screen, too. So, if you're considering the WUXGA option, just be aware that the screen might be a bit too dim for your tastes. I know I always keep the backlight at full brightness with my nw8440. The only time I ever lower it is when I'm in a very dark environment.

Also, I have a display utility that came with my external monitor, and it identifies my SEC screen as a Seiko-Epson, not as a Samsung. So who knows if SEC really stands for Samsung or Seiko-Epson

I really want the WXGA screen. LCD screens have a tendency to give me migraines and looking at the smaller type is uncomfortable for me. That's why I was asking about the lower resolution display. As for matte vs. glossy, neither make much difference to me. It's the quality of the screen that matter, imho. For example the 15" LED matte screen on the mac brook pro looks much better than most glossy screens around. Any laptop I get will be immediately calibrated, so whether or not it looks too bright or too red or whatever I'm not concerned about. Low max brightness is a concern though.

Looks like this HP is as much of a crap shoot as the Fujitsu.. but at least if I don’t like it I can return it..

Well, you see how it went for me.

I think the Samsung screen is the only one they use for WXGA, which will be grainy and have washed out color.

I ordered my first 8510P from HP.com and customized a WXGA screen.

It's a Samsung screen(year 2004), so bad. Then I changed another 8510P from HP. This time is AUO(year 2006), aslo WXGA screen, much better! Because at that time I have two 8510p on my desk, and I compared them carefully.

Okay so the Samsung and the AUO are the only two WXGA screens I've seen come up so far.. Is there any light bleeding on your screen.. evenly lit? Any grainyness?

I am wondering how the AUO WXGA screen compares to the screen on the dv6700.. because I understand which is the best. I'm just trying to get a visual on how good.. compared to something I've actually seen.

yes, there is light bleeding, but no graiyness

I've never seen the screen on the dv6700, so...
