Thanks to some great advice in the forums here, I own an HP 8510p with which I'm very pleased. I'm looking for a docking station for it and I'd like to know what others here who own this notebook are using. Is it best to go with one of the docks that HP offers? Or are there other solutions that are less expensive and work as well, or better? Thanks for any insight!

I have the 8510W and got the HP docking station.
Not the one with an expansion card.
I love it and would highly recomend the HP product over a generic one. I seamlessly go back and forth between my lappy screen and a 22 inch wide screen lcd on the docking station. I also have a full rig of USB flight sim stuff plugged into the docking station ports while still using the 4 USB ports on my laptop for mice and headphones and other portable needed items.
Some people have noted a low back ground noise out of the full set of audio ports on the expansion dock. I myself have not noticed this with a creative 5.1 system plugged into it.

I have an nw8440 (The predecessor to the 8510w), and while I personally don't own any docks, I have used the standard HP docking stations in the CS labs at my school many times (In fact, I'm on one now). They work extremely well, and I have considered getting one myself from time to time. I would highly recommend the standard one if you don't need the multibay and the expresscard slot. (The nw8440 uses the same docks as the 8510 series).

I am using the 3-in-1 NAS docking station with my nc6400, and I love it. It allows me to leave common usb devices connected when I am at home.

I have the standard HP docking station and I have the 3-in-1 nas version coming. Bought both of them on ebay from US sellers for 50% cost of retail and i am in Canada. Best purchase, lets me connect, disconnect with ease.

Unless your notebook is one of the models listed, it will not work with your computer. The HP Compaq business line uses completely different accessories than the HP Pavilion or the Compaq Presario lines.

But the HP proprietary dock maintains connections with DVI, VGA, USB, SPDIF, Audio In/out, and power. An EC solution will not offer power.

Even a brand new HP dock costs less than the Belkin dock.

Nowhere does it mention spdif. And if it had spdif, chances are it would be coax and not optical.
